10 mm S&W is NOT the only semi-auto that’s crap! MAJOR feed problems with S&W M&P 5.7 ! Also ammo hangs up in their magazines AND cannot get a fully loaded magazine to lock into the mag well with the slide forward. Must lock the slide back first and insert the mag into the gun first to get them to lock into the gun! TOTALLY A WASTE OF MONEY! Plus their customer service is non-existent when it comes to correct firearm defects! 😡

My RIA Tac Ultra Threaded double stack 10mm is completely unreliable. I'm pissed off. When it does actually cycle and fire, it's a tac driver with almost zero recoil. That said, RIA owes me a reliable pistol. They said I could send it back to them, but everyone who sends them back for repairs, says they get returned unfixed. My Gen 4 Glock 40 MOS is reliable with everything.

My G40 has had 0 issues in OEM form, as have my G20 & G29. Say what you will about Glock, but they just work. Yes, ive spent more on accessories than the actual gun, but all throughout (from OEM to now in Roland Special format) its been dead set reliable. Ive shot from cheap Magtech to Buffulo Bore & Core Bon. It runs it all without hiccup. The one & only time ive had a hiccup is when i tried running an aftermarket recoil spring. Glocks just work.

10mm is a reloader's cartridge that needs some fine tuning for the pistol. Autoloaders work best with a fast burning powder, quick pop load. The 10mm needs the slower burning, " kabooom" powders for the famous 10mm velocity. For the 1911 10mm, 18 to 20lb recoil spring, 25lb mainspring along with the flat bottom firingpin stop & good magazine springs. Good combination for a variety of hotter loads. Polymer pistols are dependent on recoil springs & magazine springs. You really have to tune the gun springs to the load. The trick for factory loads is to find the load your gun likes. Factory loads may use different powders, subject to availability. The weeker loads are probably more reliable in a variety of pistols. Too many variables. Very expensive to do a lot of testing & tuning. The 10mm is worth it.
@ShastaBean
@ShastaBean Год назад
one of the more interesting and perhaps accurate comments I've seen related to the complaints. I was wondering this myself, given the cartridge has such a wide spectrum of loads from whatever 155 - 230 grains...does it even make sense to assume every gun will cycle every possible option out there? It wouldn't seem so, unless you chop part of the chamber away and ignore the smiley-brass and call it good. Gives me something to work towards and either get mag/recoil springs such that it will cycle the 1 or 2 ammos I want it to, or handload something I can trust...and forget about being able to switch between 28 different types of rounds and throw a fit when a round doesn't chamber. I agree, it is worth it.
@adamlowe4013
@adamlowe4013 2 года назад
The biggest problem is the wide range of the power of the round. From the realm of 40 s&w to 41 magnum. You can get reliable, but you have to tune the pistol to what you are going to run. In my experience, with glock, and a kimber 1911, a 22 lb recoil spring is the sweet spot on function from warm to rowdy. And I'm talking blue dot rowdy.

Over a year ago, I saw your videos regarding the M&P 4”. That’s the gun I really want, but I’ve been holding off hoping they would work out the kinks. Apparently that has not happened and no sign that will happen. Thank you again for all the work and money you’ve put in to testing these various platforms. I have a 4.5" XD-M in 10mm. I put a Powder River Precision trigger kit in it which has an aluminum trigger (and kept the factory springs). The kit shortened the pull, made the break crisper, and has an audible and tangible single-click reset. Much better. So far I have about 1,400 rounds of all types of ammo (including lead bullet reloads) through the gun with zero malfunctions. I have not done any bench work with it for accuracy but there is nothing to sneeze at so far.

If I did I absolutely would not risk life and limb with these 100lb -- 500lb hogs. 10mm or 357 with hard cast bullets will take anything in north America. I think we need to account for the fact that the vast majority of pistol R&D for the past ~50 years has gone into 9mm chambered pistols. Like that design and reliability has pretty much been perfected, and if you bring a new 9mm offering to market, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be 99.999999999999% reliable.

I've got a Glock 40 MOS and a Glock 29 for EDC and both have been 100% from the start and the only watered down ammo I've purchased has been the Barnes XTac 155gr which was seriously disappointing in the penetration department (it opens just fine but...). With the exception of some Underwood ammo purchased for carry, everything else has been my reloads, *none* of which could be considered 'watered down!' Just the opposite in fact, some have perhaps slightly exceeded what most would consider safe and sane! All of the loads are now within reasonable limits, as sanity prevails (one does not exceed 50 years of reloading without at least a little bit of caution and sanity!)! The biggest problem I've had is getting the bullets I want to load (are you listening Speer? Probably not...) and not getting the velocity published in some of the manuals. I'm still playing around with that issue, unfortunately. Having the issues you've had is, I think, a bit unusual, so maybe there is a black cloud following you around, although I doubt it. While I've yet to experience any issue with any of my Glocks that would require them to be returned to Glock, I can understand - to a point - a hesitation to rely 100% on one but having had issues with other defensive pistols, I don't find it all that difficult to prove to myself that they are reliable enough for defensive purposes after whatever repairs have been done. Perhaps you're more difficult to convince than I am but I don't think that one broken part on one pistol defines and condemns the entire brand. However, when it comes to ammo, I am in 100% agreement with you. One big problem the manufacturers have, however, is that 10mm isn't popular enough to justify the development costs to design and produce a specific bullet for 10mm. They either use a 40 Short & Weak bullet that fails horribly when driven at true 10mm velocities, thus have to water it down to get to be reliable or just give us whatever they have in the way of FMJ. Reloading is, unfortunately, the only way one can assure one gets actual 10mm velocities, however then we are completely stuck with the mercy (ok, the lack of) of the bullet manufacturers who either have dropped off the face of the planet (Speer comes immediately to mind!), who only have 40 Short & Weak bullets, or who don't sell their components to us peons living in the mean streets! It is a dilemma! Fortunately, I find that other than the Lehigh Xtreme Defender bullets (my EDC choice in all of my carry guns), any 180 gr. that will open in cloth covered gel will work just fine as a self defense round. It's near impossible to get a 10mm into the realm of "too much" when it comes to velocity with a 180gr bullet, so they tend to work just fine in the defensive roll. The only potential problem is actually finding some for sale! Cheers, jc

Right on everything. Well said. I've enjoyed collecting, customizing, and shooting guns for many years. When 10mm pistols improved, I bought several with polymer frames. However, they all had high recoil, were obnoxious to shoot, and often inaccurate. I sold them, and bought full-size 10mm pistols with steel frames. Much better - moderate recoil, comfortable to shoot, and accurate. The advantage of polymer frame pistols is they're lighter to carry. However, when it comes to 10mm pistols, steel frames are much better. The best full-size, moderately-priced 10mm pistols with steel frames are Sig Sauer, Tanfoglio, Dan Wesson, Colt, ArmsCor, and Kimber.

The biggest issue with 10mm factory offerings is mostly due to factory ammunition variables; it is probably the least adherent to an AGREED upon standard of loading.
@rickoshea4546
@rickoshea4546 2 года назад
In my experience when a manufacturer attempts to increase "Chamber support," there is a tipping point that negativity affects cycling reliability via short and steep feed ramps with a sharp transition into the chamber, they do this while using a spring rate that cycles the broadest range of factory loadings, but is insufficient for the upper end of the spectrum. The 230gr hardcast surely has the longest OACL of an available loading and plays havoc with something akin to "Tolerance Stacking."

Spot on, brother! I want to run 10mm in both range ammo and carry ammo! I think Sig Elite 180gr FMJ (haven’t seen for sale in a long time!) and Magtech 180gr FMJ is as close as you can get without reloading. If I want to shoot .40 S&W, I have pistols for that. If I want to shoot 9mm, I have pistols for that. IMHO, the 10mm is an extremely versatile cartridge. One example is those on a budget, or just want to own one pistol, can water it down to .40 S&W, run middle of the road loads, and run Norma spec loads or Underwood and Buffalo Bore. This caliber can be loaded to suit your defensive, hunting, and range needs/wants. The XTEN is a beautifully ergonomic pistol for me, but I want one with a 4 inch barrel. With 767 rds of the Magtech fired (with a FTF and a FTE) and 46 rds of Underwood 165gr Gold Dots (no issues), the gun has it’s issues. The 15 round magazine is a small as humanly possible (surprisingly smaller than the XDM 16 rd magazine), and with that, probably needs to be about 2-3mm longer to make seating a loaded mag on a closed slide easy… and racking the slide on a fully loaded mag easier…. Now, after firing the rounds I’ve fired, it eased up racking the slide ever so slightly. The biggest issue I have is slide to frame wobble. With the magazine removed and striker at rest (not cocked) the slide has a horrible rattle. My XTEN is my 14th P320, and none other exhibits that wobble! The barrel to slide fit is tight, and is more accurate than I am. I’d love to see a good shot put this on paper. For reloaders, the XTEN kicks fired brass in to the next zip code!

I just purchased the Sig X10. I think I share your opinion on the polymer frame 10mm are kinda wack rn. I hope this Sig x10 can handle underwood 220gr hard cast. I really like the P320 frame but I also need a very reliable gun for woods carry. LWroad was using some wack 230gr double tap that didn’t work in any of the polymer handguns he had. I think that’s the round being the issue. He also shot underwood 220gr hard cast and 140gr extreme penetrators threw it just fine. I am worried about the feeding issue Chuke had but I honestly had the same feeding issue with 15rd in the mag with my Sig P320 xcompact. I pick it up from the store tomorrow and will be testing many rounds this weekend at my cabin. Can keep everyone updated. **Update **- shot about 50rds of standard 10mm 180gr FMJ range ammo with no issue. I shot about 20x Underwood 10mm 140gr extreme penetrators and 20x 220gr hard cast 10mm with no issues. The only issue so far is that I can barely get the 15th round into the mag and it will not fit into the x10 mag well to feed. Unless it’s slide is back and you are reloading. It’s weird. Other then that it shot amazing and it definitely kicks a bit more then 9mm😂 This is my first 10mm handgun.

I just want to add I was in Alaska and my friends Ruger revolver had the cylinder jam in the cold. My 1911 still worked. Not saying revolvers suck. Just any mechanical devices fail. I agree. There’s too many loads and not enough consistent ammo out there. Sure they should make watered down loads for “plinking” but also hot range ammo for people to get used to the recoil as well. The problem with all of these guns is usually the springs being to loose or tight for the ammo. This is why the companies should have 2 springs and label them for their intended use and this would solve a lot of issues .

I started to by a 44 mag revolver for this very purpose. I quickly changed my mind. One (or two) rounds on a close charging bear or Mt. Lion and you'll WISH you had more fire power. You can shoot a G20/40 all day long without failure. The logic of this makes about as much sense as saying you'd rely on a Ruger Single Six or GP 100 over a 9mm semi auto for personal protection or LE. NOT a very smart choice.

Larry Vickers said once that he thought a 1911 45acp needed at least a 5 inch barrel/slide to be reliable. I found that to be true with Glock 10mms. I had three different Glock Model 20s and one Model 40/MOS. I had issues with all of the 20s. The 40/MOS ran like a sewing machine. I could hold the 40/MOS as loose as I wanted, shoot it upside down, whatever and it never choked. Every 20 I had needed a firm, perfect, strangulation hold or it jammed. I always ran hot factory ammo in all of them. Underwood, Doubletap, Buffalo Bore. Norma and Corbon in the good ol' days.

I don't understand how 10 mm came back in style. Back in the late 80's and early 90's 10mm was trendy but quickly fell out of favor because the caliber always beat the gun to death. The fact that the new models are choking isn't surprising at all because revolvers tend to be structurally stronger than semi-autos and can handle hot cartridges more reliably.

I have experience with two all steel Tanfoglio pistols. An EAA imported Witness Elite Match SAO and an IFG imported Limited Pro DA/SA. Both are really quite nicely made and are reliable. Both have adjustable rear sights, the limited pro rear sight being the better of the two. There is a whole lineup of Tanfoglio pistols in 10mm with various features. IFG in Texas is the importer for new Tanfoglio pistols right now. But Tanfoglio has been making 10mm pistols for years. Certainly before the recent resurgence in popularity of the cartridge. I have no experience with the polymer P Match. I actually really like the weight of the all steel guns when it comes to actually shooting it. So the polymer p match never interested me. But I’m of the opinion that .40 and 10mm are much better suited to all steel guns. That’s where the two cartridges started, in the third Gen S&W semi autos. We’ve pressed them in to service in polymer guns over the last few decades and as you are finding out, 10mm for sure and still to some extent .40, have trouble being tamed in cheap ass polymer. It’s my opinion that the gun manufacturers have pulled a fast one on a lot of the gun buying community with the increasing use of polymers. So much so, that many people have never had the opportunity to see how much more pleasant it is to actually shoot a heavier all steel gun. I think you and many others are dispelling the myth that polymer = reliable.

Mainly shoot 155/165 JHPs and FMJs and 200 grain hardcast flat points. Had a RIA TAC II Combat Commander size gun and it was 100% reliable with everything it was fed, factory or hardloads. Only reason I sold it was I didn't like the muzzleheavy balance that the bull barrel caused. It was replaced with the SIG Nightmare Carry in .357 SIG and a Fusion 10mm barrel added...that is my woods carry gun when I carry a semi... If you want a revolver try and find a Ruger GP-100 Match Champion in 10mm...very hard to find right now. Excellent shooter. I've been shooting and loading 10mm for roughly 11years now, long enough that when I started with it the only real 10mm options were a used first gen Delta Elite that had basically the worst chamber support of any 10mm pistol ever made and the GLOCK (20 & 29 of which I have both). The G20 gen3(I have a Gen2 & more than one gen 3) In particular is and has been The most reliable out of the box despite being "Undersprung" with only a 17# spring from factory, with nothing more than a stainless guide rod and 20 or 22# spring I have put thousands of hand loads through G20sfs without issues; and I am talking 180gr jhp @1350+, 200gr jhp @ about 1300 to my current favorite 155xtp @ 1550ish through the stock barrel. I've driven a 155xtp through a G20 gen 2 with a 6 in lonewolf barrel & 22# spring to just shy of 1700fps, and in a Ruger SR1911 10mm with a 24# spring I have seen 1770 fps with a 155xtp. Now I starting to play with the new XDMs. I would definitely say that the GLOCK 20 ( not gen4) has a proven track record for reliability. Personally I wouldn't mess with the G20 gen 4, the G40 is the way to go when it comes to gen 4s. I've owned/own 10 mm 1911's from Rock Island (they building them when no others were) Ruger and Springfield all of which needed extra power springs.

agree about the watered-down ammo I have a 1911 in 10 mm most of the ammo available just does allow the gun to live up to its potential. I have had feed problem from time to time which I believe is mainly due to weak ass loads not powerful enough to properly cycle the gun. why manufacture 10mm if you are only loading it with a 40 cal. load. my friend reloads and the difference between his loads and factory ammo is night and day. he doesn't load super hot rounds either just what a standard 10mm should be.

I jumped on the 10MM wagon a few years back....and was disappointed. The hype was there and I think it was based on all the "LIMP" ammo. Being frustrated, I set about to find a working combo thru KKM barrels and judicious reloading. Since I retired a few years back as an engineer, I started with eliminating variables....but kinda working backwards. I can easily make 40SW that runs circles around off the shelf 10, so I wanted balls to the wall penetration. Caught lots of flack from my ASSociates. But physics is physics. Powder "X" pushes a certain grain bullet to a certain velocity within a certain barrel length. Now, on paper, there does not appear to be a significant advantage of 10MM over stout 357MAG, other than capacity. 180GR at 1400+ in 357 is not easily obtained but is within reach. 10MM needs a lot of mojo to do that. But I like PENETRATION! And that hands down favors HARD CAST LEAD WITH A WIDE MEPLAT! Preferably nose heavy too. Fellows, that 10MM with a 220 grain HC is simply spectacular. To hell with water jugs, that load makes 2 bleeding holes thru ANYTHING in my woods (elk and bear also...). Next item is recoil springing, which simply CANNOT be handed with stiff springs, so save your $$$$. It takes a compensator device to keep the chamber locked up until bullet is gone and then the thing can unlock. Do this and no kabooms....none! FWIW, I am getting real close with a KKM barrel and 22/24LB recoil. The barrel feeds the stubby bullets fine and I have found I don't need 1400 FPS. A lesson from the old Buffalo Hunters of days gone by......220 10MM hard cast at 1200 works well and no comp. Go faster, gotta have the compensator. I have seen the animals (big nasty ones) with 2 holes.....LENGTHWISE from 4 to 6 FEET APART!!! GOOD ENOUGH!!

I have a 1988 yr Delta Elite, and both the 3.8 and 5.25" XDM guns. While I haven't shot any Double Tap through either, I have put a combination several hundred rds of Underwood and other full power JHP's through both guns without any malfs..... I know " my mileage may vary" from yours. As far as the S&W 10's, only the 4.0 has given any problems on the RU-vid vids.

I have a 4.6” S&W M&P 2.0 that isn’t worth the material it is made out of. I bought it on December 7th from Buds Guns. It will not feed any ammo, light or heavy loads, 180 grain or 200 grain, FMJ, hp or hardcast. I get 3 failures per magazine if not more. It has been back to S&W for repairs and they polished the feed ramp and chamber. This made no difference in reliability. This gun hates me and I hate it. I wish I could get that $700 back. I keep it my my safe, for now, as no shops are willing to take it on trade for even $500. It is a daily reminder to me that S&W is not the company they once were. I wish mine ran 1/2 as good as LWroad’s. Then it would at least be a usable range toy. Unfortunately, I bought it as a defensive pistol to carry. It is useless and unreliable for carry. Guess I’m SOL.

@@svtkilr I finally have some success to report. I have installed the Springer Precision 11 Coil Magazine Spring SP0168 in both magazines. These springs are significantly stronger than the factory S&W magazine springs. The pistol made it through 150 rounds yesterday without a hiccup. I ran through 100 S&B JHP and 50 of the Sig Elite Performance FMJ, which have had the most problems and feel pretty hot. I used the factory guide rod and spring for this testing. I will run 50 more of the Sig Elite Performance FMJ and JHP through it next weekend and see if the success continues, but so far this is the biggest improvement that I have seen after running g every possible combination of guide rod spring and since S&W polished the feed ramp and chamber. I think it has been the magazine springs all along. I hope that I finally have this thing working as is should from the factory. It is ridiculous that I have had to spend over $100 on aftermarket parts to make this thing work.

I live with brown bears, 500 miles from the nearest road to anywhere. S&W broke the faith with their dumpster fire M&P. Nobody in Alaska will bring them up from the lower 48. We can't afford failure. We don't play. Springfield is a trash company that paid for gun control too recently to ignore. Even if they got rid of the grip safety that makes their guns unreliable, jamming, trash, I still won't carry one. However, a sloppy, constantly flexing, Tupperware frame made Glock the most reliable gun on the market for 3 decades. When they figured out that 10mm case needs a fully supported chamber, and called it "Gen 4," there has never been a more reliable 10mm than Glock 40. It doesn't care what the temperature and humidity are. Aluminum FMJ, HST, and Buffalo Bore can all run in the same magazine load. Expecting a Glock 20 to perform like a 40 is like expecting a 3" 1911 45ACP to perform like a 5" Government. Velocity isn't the only benefit to barrel length. Yes, Glock has the worst sights and the worst ergos. But it's the only semiautomatic pistol you can bet your life on in Alaska, in January or June. And they come with a clear conscience that Gaston Glock won't spend profits on gun control like Springfield.

Dude! You're my trusted source on 10MM firearms now. A few weeks ago your videos personally sold me on the XD-M 3.8. I bought it, love it, no regrets. Thanks for your videos. I feel complete when it comes to polymer 10MM frames, I'm good with this, no interest in looking into anything else polymer-wise. However..... I do have the gun fever now, saw my brother's RIA 1911 and immediately wanted a steel frame (I've never cared about 1911s, ever, but they look nice). Been looking, and fell in love with the 6" long slides, but the prices differ WILDLY! I'd like to see you do a side by side, battle royale, of the 6" barrel 1911 10MMs. Specifically the ported Iver Johnson Eagle XL 10 and the Kimber Super Jägare (both can come with ported barrels, from factory). All I know about Kimber is people either worship or condemn them. They seem EXTREMELY overpriced, like I can get a whole AR platform for the cost of one. Your channel deserves to blow up, hopefully you get huge so you can afford ridiculously expensive tests like the one I want to see lol.

Durability concerns with a powerful round like 10mm is why I was looking for a 1911 10mm… I wanted to hold the Ronin and TRP Operator 1911's. The store only had the XDM Elite striker fired polymer in full size. I loved the round capacity, ergonomics, flared mag well, and the "Gear UP" deal so I bought the XDM Elite. I have only shot a few dozen rounds through it because I waited months for a custom shoulder holster to be made and shipped. I haven't shot it enough to make a certain proclamation on durability… that takes years. But so far, I feel confident in this polymer handgun. I refused the 6 plastic optic adapter mounts that Springfield will supply for free if you ask because I felt the plastic would not suffice for a 10mm. Instead I paid for the metal Springfield adaptor to mount my Holosun EPS Carry. the fit of the adaptor mount and optic is nearly flush with the sides of the slide. It looks great and I have confidence that it will withstand the recoil.

This is right on. Here's a few things I've learned from many examples of Glock 20 ownership, and lots of hot 10mm, that will hopefully be useful to people out there, and maybe save some frustration: 1). Everyone saying their Gen 4 Glock 20 is "100% out of the box" simply does not train or shoot any significant volume, and likely does not shoot significant amounts of 10mm that is on the upper end of the power spectrum. People who take 10mm seriously, as well as proving their gun/ammo combination seriously, know that G20s are known to have failures to feed with hot, heavy, long OAL, and/or wide meplat 10mm ammo. The cause is generally accepted to be slide velocity that is too fast, and outrunning the magazine's ability to feed. The fixes (Much heavier recoil spring, increased power magazine spring) produce something that has extremely good reliability, but you're not going to get that out of the box. 2). Every Glock 20, whether you intend to shoot nuclear level 10mm in it or not, NEEDS a heavier recoil spring than what Glock provides from the factory (which is 17lbs). My baseline for any Gen 4 G20 is a 22lb spring. This alone will produce excellent reliability with all of the hotter factory loads (the Sig Elite 180 grain at 1,250 fps as an example). Not only this, but the gun will continue to function perfectly with watered down .40 S&W-level factory loadings, and won't even be grip sensitive (!). The fact that you can put a 30% heavier recoil spring in a G20, and it will continue to happily function with the weakest 10mm should be a clue that these guns are COMICALLY under-sprung from the factory. Couple this with the fact that the consistency of modern Glock recoil spring assemblies has been poor in the last few years, IME (inconsistent spring rates, and recoil spring assemblies that can spontaneously fall apart after heavy use). Throw away your OEM recoil spring. 3) You noted that your G20 had a point of impact that was significantly higher than point of aim. In my experience- THEY ALL DO. I've never seen a Gen 4 G20 that didn't shoot high, to the tune of ~4-5" high at 25 yards. Most people don't have the fundamentals to notice, but their G20s shoot high. Glock uses the exact same rear sight height on the G21 as the G20, which should be a clue that the sights out of the box are not regulated for a 10mm gun. This has an easy solution (Buy sights from a manufacturer that offers different height front sights like Dawson, 10-8, etc), but it's not gonna be correct out of the box. 4) A significant part of the problem, like you said, is that manufacturers are trying to produce guns for a caliber which energies are completely all over the map. It's probably not fair to expect a gun to be optimized for both .40S&W level ammo, as well as 'real' 10mm. I agree the standard for which these guns should be optimized is 200 grains at 1,200 FPS/ 180 grains at 1,250 FPS. For those who want something less, there are plenty of other handgun cartridges with lower power factors to choose from. Great vid.
