i know this is a year old video, but I just purchased one of these firearms yesterday and your video helped me confirm that I made a good choice. Thank you
So far if you don't mind me asking which one do you prefer the most as far as a carry gun I'm leaning towards the Springfield with the 4.5 inch barrel outside the waistband to carry thanks for your time in advance cheers 😎👍
@Jonathan I have only fired the glock 20, s&w mp 10mm, and the Springfield xdm 10mm at the range. Edge goes to the Springfield, but I wasn't overly impressed with any of them. I also dry fired the sig x10, it felt the best by far, out of all 4 pistols when dry firing. I have not had an opportunity yet to check out the FN 10 yet at all. Ideally I wish to test fire the sig x10 and the fn10 at the range, if I can rent or borrow them. My hunch is that they will be better than the ones I've fired at the range so far. ....now if only my budget would cooperate with my preferences, lol.
You are correct! Ive seen people taping them and ranger banding them lately.... Not a good idea in my opinion. You are right, proper grip should activate it no problem👊🦃👍
@@SanctumOfDreams Removing 1911s from the picture since these are brought IMHO for 2 reasons. You're old or you're competing. What percentage of handguns sold do you believe have grip safeties? Do all your guns have grip safeties? If not, how do you manage to deal with that? Do you "need" it or is it just a nice thing to have? Do you not trust your own judgment? I don't need a hammer fired gun but, I prefer one. I don't need a Semiautomatic over a revolver but I prefer one. I don't need a gun without a safety but I prefer one. So why exactly do you need a grip safety?
I watched dozens of reviews and this is my favorite, thanks for doing all the tests. I'm getting an additional drop in threaded barrel, so it will be like having a 4.5" and a 5.25" :)
Last night I was having trouble sleeping and going over all the 10mm handguns in my head since Sig updated the list, and I thought "it's kinda weird there's no full size XDM". Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
Man you absolutely killed this review. Excellent job sir. Ive been researching the top 3 10mm contenders for the past year or so. I was already leaning toward the 3.8 Springfield. But now its pretty much a lock for me. 22 feet difference in MV isn't worth the added weight and length in this case apparently. Again well done review
Awesome video man! I have the elite 10mm 3.8. Between the two. The 3.8 is the way to go. Best both worlds you can have 15 round mags or use the 11 round mags for conceal carry like I do. And the 25fps velocity doesn’t make a difference at all. Loyal Springfield guy right here.
I know Turkey, at this point, much prefers the 3.8". To me, it doesn't make sense to neuter the 10mm with a short Bbl... might as well go with a 4". 40 Cal and carry Underwood. I went the opposite way: 4.5" with 5.25" threaded barrel... true 10mm velocity. I carry IWB with a C&G Tactical holster w/TLR7 & RMR-02. But... I'm a big guy, and I wear a hard nylon pair of duty suspenders all the time, which negates weight issues for me. The longer barrel gives me 1150-1200 from lower powered ammo like 180 SIG and AAC. Again, my size and suspenders support my IWB carry. Probably not a great solution for average sized guys who are not wearing stiff suspenders and belt. Thought I'd share my use model of the 4.5".
Very cool. I suppose you have plans on getting the Sig P320 XTen for review and testing soon? It seems the 10 is getting some attention by manufacturers finally.
Excellent teview. I especially appreciate the comparison with the 3.8" model. I am glad I opted for the compact model for better concealability and lighter weight along with the option of thr larger/extended magazine.
I got the 9mm 4.5 OSP Elite It's my favorite pistol and it's not even close. I've had most of the popular brands. I want to buy another Elite OSP maybe the 3.8 model or the FDE 4.5 model. I'm 42 and Springfield XDM is the last pistol of my life. This is the one I'm growing old with. In 20+ years I want to still be alive and still have the same XDM Elite OSP pistols. In 15 years of buying guns, I knew like 5 years ago the Elite would be my favorite pistol. Everytime I saw a video or pic of the Elite, I wanted the pistol so bad.. I kept buying other pistols I hated like the P320. I finally bought the Elite and sold the P320. No regrets. I'm done with Glocks and Sig or any other brand. I'm not even interested in the Springfield Echelon.. XD is my favorite. I like the grip safety and the design and high capacity and the feel, and finish on the Elite. It's also laser accurate.
Mr. Turkey your reviews are TOP NOTCH outstanding, hands down. I could not find another review as perfect as yours. Not only you make sense on any solving problems, you are very smart. Thanks a lot, and by the way I check your reviews over and over again, lots to learn from you.
I see with the longer slide/barreled XDMs they are starting to use the captured 2 piece recoil spring/guide rods now. Most of the older 4.5 XDMs used to use the non captured guide rods. Maybe it is just me, but the captured guide rods seemed to help mitigate the recoil a little better than the non captured ones.
The difference in velocity is not a big deal for me. I'm very close to buying a 10MM and looking at the 3.8 XDM Elite. Sig just introduced a 10MM in their 320 model. I need to compare it to the 3.8 and decide. Thx for the great Video as it was very informative. You and All have a safe and good Memorial Holiday. Please remember our fallen and their families, especially this weekend.
Hard choices now with so many out there. I think they're all running pretty solid except for that Smith and Wesson. I hope you have a pleasant Memorial Day as well.👍👊🦃
I also think the slide mass adds to the recoil the same way a bigger bolt carrier does in a rifle. However it is still a smooth shooter. The gun is smooth. Like mine so far.
You probably made the wise decision if you plan on shooting full power loads alot. With the heavier slide, longer recoil assembly and larger frame, undoubtedly the 4 .5 will be able to take more battering than the 3.8. Just sayin.
Just to let you know, that springfield armory is doing their gear up promo from July 1st to August 31st and all springfield armory striker fired pistols are eligible, so for free using your proof of purchase online you get 3 free mags and a range bag!!! Spread the word, also you can make a short about it, cause it's a wicked deal!!!
I have the 3.8 and love it. I'll be getting the 4.5 soon. I appreciate your opinion on it. One improvement that I made to my 3.8 is I swapped the fiber optic front sight with my Hellcat front sight.
As usual great test. Love the 3.8, 4.5 about the same as the g20. Difference in the 3.8 and a g40 is about 110fps to 120fps with 180g bullets including Underwood.
I just got one in FDE and shot it last night and damn I love it. First time shooting 10mm and started with a few boxes of bear ammo. Gun is pretty damn nice! Been Carrying it and it's super comfortable
Reminds, me of the XDM in .45 calibur I had years ago ✅. Other than the mag well being wider 0.3 inch longer slide 3 bullet's more 💯. I like it ✅. My first 10mm on order 💯
@@theturkeysopinion I have the original XDM compact 45acp 3.8" it has very little recoil and carries well. The 2- 13 round mags & the pistol carried on on the 10-round you don't feel under prepared for the day.
Lol, not with that slow speed. I was trying not to shoot my own hands lol. I dont do thst often. Ill have to practice speed+accutacy😉 Thanks or watching!👊🦃👍
Hahaha- I've watched this before but rewatching I see that electric cleaner. I used carb cleaner before and have a can of that exact electric cleaner. Got me a new cleaner! Thanks. Always a good video from ya, enjoy the range time - from my recliner.
The upgraded trigger you put in the 3.8 is probably why it is more accurate. If you have any Underwood 180gr XTPs laying around, please check the velocity difference between the 3.8 and 4.5. I currently have the 3.8 and have thought about going to something like this 4.5 for more velocity and rounds if it isn't much harder to carry. Thanks for this video!
Is there a video of the type of trigger he put on or do you know which one it is? That would absolutely help with the accuracy along with the Talon grips.
I have the XDM 5.25" I love it. May put a PRP trigger in it or just wait to see if they have a XDM Elite in 5.25 come out. I have the 3.8 XDM Elite 10mm and I love that one.
Great video… what about putting the 4.5” slide and barrel on the 3.8” frame? 3.8” on the 4.5” frame? These kind of mix and match combos work great with the P365 to get the exact configuration you want… curious if it works with the XDM elite line?
Hey turkey man. Great video once again. I'm very curious as well as some, about you testing the sig 320 x ten. I'm reading mixed opinions about the quality of the sig x ten. If it's gonna fail, it will be in your review. Granted if you do one. Thanks again for what you enjoy doing and bringing us along.....👍
I have the 4.5 inch with the threaded barrel. That is the one I upgraded with the all metal trigger that is in your 3.8 inch. Mine isn't for concealed carry so the size doesn't bother me. I bought it for the stopping power of the 10mm round. I usually carry one of my smaller frame 9mm guns. Great video. Thanks and looking forward to more appearances of the 4.5 inch.
Put some underwood 180 grains @1300 fps in there and see if it kicks like a 9mm 😆. I have some that are 1350fps but they only make them in 1300 now. Most 10 mm is a little hotter than .40. The real 10 mm loading is why I bought a glock 20. It’s nice to see new 10’a coming to the market.
Well I got one of the lemons I have the 3.8 had to send it back to Springfield. We'll see how the customer service is it just kept jamming it's loading the bullet into the frame of the gun instead of up the ramp into the barrel. I'm not discourage though when it was working it was a great shooter if they puts the problem they have a fan here. Not many 10 MMS can be concealed as easy as that one. Thank you for the news Springfield video and I hope you tortured the hell out of that one too great video
We will definitely torture! Sorry you had problems with yours that sucks. Springfield seems to be pretty good about customer service.... We're going to see what happens when I call them and ask them why this gun shoots 2" high and they let it leave the factory like that according to their target..👍👊🦃
I like your thinking of running it like you carry it. Regarding felt recoil... The heavier gun should by all accounts have less recoil, the same weight bullet is moving more mass of the larger slide and all, but what you may be feeling is the slide's weight as it moves back. It may not be so much "more" recoil as it is "different" recoil due to the longer slide. Great review, very informative. I'm going to have to get one of these.
So I bought one today, took it to the range, LOVE IT. I'm a 1911 guy, and while it's no 1911, it's a great gun and ate everything I shot through it. What are you using for mag pouches for your 15 rounders? What are you using as a holster? I forgot to look for those at the shop while I was there.
I haven’t read all the comments so sorry if this is redundant. I just recently purchased the 4.5” and I am about to purchase the 3.8”. It looks like the 3.8 ships with the #1 backstrap & the 4.5 ships with the #2 installed. Do you think that could be throwing off your point of impact? Thanks for the review. I think I’ll be happy with both!
🤔.... i figured it might be a powder burn thing but what about slide mass? More reciprocating mass might bounce more? I need a hi speed camera for this kinda crap. 👍🦃👊
@@theturkeysopinion being a brand new gun it could be the springs and not broken in. I’m sure it has had sone rounds through it now. If it still kicks more I’d still say velocity. More mass should kick less. Takes more energy to move more mass. Longer barrel creates more velocity from the same energy (powder charge) Action reaction more velocity more recoil. That’s my line of thinking anyway. Sounds like it could be a thing. Lol
Group size looks great . I’m having a issue right now with sone hand loads that are crimped still wanting to push back. Do you think that could be a oversizing issue? I’ve crimped until I hourglassed the projectile and it still allows pushback. First time I’ve saw this before so I’m trying to understand it not just correct it. I’m thinking the de capping die was set too deep and made the whole case too large.
Interesting. I have a G20 so I'm set for a 10mm. I did have an XD40 but that made its way to my son. I do like the XD series - they are great pistols. Looks like you like this new one. I will say that I am right handed and like the Glock's simplicity - no grip safety, no extra controls, no optics plates, etc. - about as close as an autoloader can get to being a high capacity revolver. Those loads are rather sedate... I have a 40 S&W Glock and a 40 barrel for my G20 (you don't really need one to shoot 40 in a 10mm barrel - but I load cast bullets too so...). But for 10mm I really want full power, not 40 S&W level loads...
I'm glad I got the M&P....Better concealment, and due to Pricktzer in Illinois, it has a 15 rd mag, which still makes mine legal. 16+ rd mags are now banned in Illinois....But its looking good for us in the courts, this has been shut down so far for at least 800 complainants.
Just a hunch, but I think Dawson makes the sights for the XDm and their default for full size pistols is usually set to a 20 yard point of aim/impact on their front sight height which seems downright silly to me, way too far. And just another hunch, they probably have their front sight height a little offset for the compact 3.8" model to give a shorter point of aim/impact, ie. maybe 10-15 yards. I saw someone mention swapping in the Hellcat sights, that made perfect sense. I'd reach out to Springfield direct and see if they can remedy that, they're cool like that, they might swap out your sights and just have you pay shipping.
Great video I like how you compared both sizes! Now back to the S&W 2.0 10mm again lol I have over 1000rds through my M&P 2.0 and I’ve had 2 FFT so far and that was from some S&B range ammo and one underwood lipstick it’s still running great! 🤔
10mm is a beast for sure. I recently got a Ronin 5" in 10mm. would like to see how it performs with Real full power loads like 220 hardcast or anything buffalo bore. looks good though with those neutered 10s. full power loads 220 at 1200fps. I wanna see how it kicks there. my Ronin being stainless is pretty heavy and really soaks up that recoil. the XD being much lighter got me curious. should I kick my G29.
Sorry to hear that you got rid of your XDM 10mm 4.5 inch. I have the xdm 10mm 5.2 with the threaded barrel osp The only difference I think between the newer model and the old one is the trigger Improvement. They're pretty much the same gun. Don't know what's going on with the new elite models barrel's.The older model barrels seems to be very accurate haven't had any problems or heard of any accuracy issues. If you get a chance maybe you should try one of the older ones. I guess you might not want to since you had problems with both of them. I discovered your channel a while back I really enjoyed all your testing on guns and ammo that you do. Thanks for all the hard work you do on putting out.Videos on firearms and ammo content for the gun community. Wish you the best and good luck with your channel.
Ordered an M&P 10mm, saw yours and everyone else's issues with the pistol and canceled. Decided I was going to get a Glock 20 Gen 5. Saw people saying that their Glock 20s explode because the chambers aren't 100% supported. Now I'm eyeing this, and it's cheaper than the Glock and the M&P, but it seems to have better featured and I'm trying to find people having problems with this gun and I can't. I really want a 10mm pistol for the mountains, this might be the main one I'm focusing on for now EDIT: 1 year later I ended up with an FN 510 MRD
Hi - thanks for this video! - what do you think would be better for this pistol for self-defense - a red dot sight or a green laser on the rail?? It looks like using a red dot sight on this pistol would prevent you from using the iron sights whereas a laser on the rail would allow you to use either or both. Plus in a self defense situation you may not be able to get the dot in sight in time.
Why couldn't mind be nice!? I really love the 3.8. It blew my mind when the other one shot like that. I wanted it to be great. Has to be some sort of a factory issue. I can't imagine many of them are like that. Glad you got a good one!👍👊🦃
@@theturkeysopinion that would bug me a lot! I wonder if they put the wrong sights on there by mistake? But mine is spot on with the sig 180 grain ammo. I shoot around 10 yards or so.
Lol😮I only had one shot through a bull’s-eye when I got the 5:25 Man I wish that they would get a nice sturdy plastic clip it would surely help the weight of the firearm
Nice. I', hoping for the 545 threaded, or 5.25 Precision. A long slide may be nice too since I'm shooting a 6" Kimber in 10mm. Thanks Turkey. Newer subscriber ad been enjoying your 10mm series and others.
I just returned two of the 15 rd mags this morning because they would not seat with the magwell installed. Since the gun came with the same flat base plates, I am thinking they are meant for use with the magwell removed.
I have the 3.8 and the 5.25, curious if you take the sleeve off the 15 Rd mag if: 1- it will fit in the 4.5 2- is it the same mag body or completely new re-design. 3- will the new mags work in the 3.8. thanks.
I understand among "gun guys" there's not a lot of engineering degrees, but I wish I could correct a wrong that seems to be universal. Never clean and oil a new gun. That is your one chance to look for manufacturing defects. We have tolerances on the line, but sometimes those tolerances are measured at each individual step, and thus they can become additive. Once you find you have a problem, then, by all means, start making excuses for us. "...It failed, but I didn't spend 3 days dremeling the feed ramp... I didn't remanufacture the gun, I didn't disassemble it and check all the parts, and my person favorite... it just needs a break in period." Thanks guys. You make our job really easy.
Great review! Pretty much everything I wanted to know. Thinking about getting one of these, but still a toss up between the 2. Velocities weren't really all that far apart either. Got to wonder if all the 4.5 versions shoot high like that, or if it's just that one.
Thank you for the video. It might be my eyes, however it looks like there is a difference in the triggers. Looks like the replacement trigger on the 3.8 is a Re-designed one. Did I notice a difference in the rear sight on the 3.8 inch model as well? Based on the video it looks as if the recoil difference has more to do with your weak hand only shooting.
Good shooting tom, im still here and enjoyed this video, does the 16 round mag fit in the 3.8 inch? I want to see more of this and maybe see if you can make it choke
I think the 10mmXDM is very promising if I had to choose one over the Glock this would be it . If the smith and Wesson worked reliably that would be my choice but I think it sucks from what I see
I had FTF consistently on the 14th round of every magazine for about 250 rounds. But after that it has been flawless for about 1500 rounds and counting. It seems to me like it has a break in, which is not the norm for striker guns I guess. I have the 4" model.
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure yet... I wasn't going to push it that far at the moment. For right now I was treating it like a newborn lol. But we will definitely figure it out.👍👊🦃
So, have you decided if you are going to keep it? If so, are you going to replace the polymer trigger with an aluminum one from Powder River Precision, like you did the 3.8?
I'd love to see it in threaded barrel osp supressor sights option like my 9mm xdm elite tactical. I love that gun but I also love my xdm elite osp 3.8 in 10mm but my head just says I need a 5in version for hunting lol
I have a Springfield hellcat with a 15R magazine. When I load it to capacity, it rattles. But it always runs perfectly. So what do it mean when it rattles? Because I called Springfield about that when I first got it and they said it was normal.
It’s a good idea to check for rattles from time to time. Sometimes the mag spring may get compressed and stay that way which could create a problem, other times when mag springs get worn out over time, it can have issues with compression causing malfunction. Also, if a person takes a mag apart and inserts the spring incorrectly, could cause a problem with some manufacturers mags.
