Are Bike Fenders Worth It?

In this video you will see if mud fenders actually protect you from getting splattered with mud! I ride down a trail called Atomic Dog each time to try out different fender options. I put the Crud XL and Mucky Nutz fenders to the test and compare these options to riding without a fender. Which mud guard do you use and why?

Danica I want to thank you for your advice and helping me with picking between the Delano and the La Sal. I made my choice and ordered it today! I got the Delano with a bit of a twist to the spec. I was assured it will do what I need it to do and it will still be playful and fun. So seeing the comparison for the fenders is a big help as well. I need to order one.

I’ve got a DVO integrated fender & it does a good job on wrapping around my seal area, which is more the reason I like to use fenders. Saving my fork is most important! And well, the GoPro lens as much as possible 😝

Focal MTB yes I have noticed that. When I ride in loose rocky areas I hear little pebbles hit the small fender and help protect my fork from being hit and scratched by the small rocks! Plus they look cool 😎

I run a small fender up front and as far as I can tell, it is decent for keeping mud mostly off my face, but does not do much else. You can see how the bottom tube is caked most the way up, which seems to indicate it is slowing some of the mud flinging, but a good amount is still getting splattered all over.
@FifeFlow
@FifeFlow 4 года назад
Yeah the small fenders do a little for sure. I also have noticed that they are covered with mud too so that is better than ending up on you! Usually when I rock a small fender I wear glasses to keep the mud out of my eyes. I hate that feeling!

I was resistant to fenders for many years, as I ride mostly in dry and rocky desert. However, I encountered deep snow and mud on a recent out of town ride and was noticing the snow and mud was jamming small pebbles in my lower rear pivots, not to mention I was absolutely soaked in snow and mud. Having an ebike, I realized it was time to finally drink the fender Kool Aid. Danica’s video reinforced my needs. Thanks!

Yeah they are pretty minimal so they don’t do a lot that’s for sure! For really wet places the large fenders are a winner. 👍🏼
@ArbitraryLifestyle

Yep, they're just in the wrong place. Mud and such that's getting in your face is coming off the front tire WAY below the coverage of those fenders.

I ride with one mucky nutz on front and one on the back. The one on back is supposed to keep my suspension cleaner. Totally debatable. I hope, deep down inside, that they are working for me, but I always come home a complete mess.

You're all missing the major benefit here...which is keeping the stanchions' seals and fork's guts CLEAN!!!...THAT should be the comparison criterion...and it would be more than obvious if a fender is worth it...the rest is just collateral benefit...
@FifeFlow
@FifeFlow 3 года назад
Good point that also is super important. The main reason I have a fender is because here in the PNW you can’t wear any eye wear without it fogging and getting some dirt in the eye while going full speed can turn deadly very quickly 😬
@taz800
@taz800 3 года назад
@@FifeFlow I know and I feel your pain! Vision obstruction is not a joke while riding, especially in a fast trail! But, IMHO, you need a combination of fenders to achieve that, that is: the longest front wheel fender u can find (extending also a LOT in front of the fork bridge), like mugguard, mudhugger, etc., as also a gut fender (the one attached on the downtube). Then you may have some results. But NOTHING, can substitute eye protection provided with a pair of glasses/goggles! So, try to find the best fogging resistant eyewear you can or/and anti-fogging sprays/solutions to use (even saliva, as divers know pretty well), because nothing can protect your precious (and pretty I have to admit) eyes better! There's not only mud and dust, there are also branches that lurk around the corner... I've been there and I know and it's not a joke! Just my 2¢. Besides that, I loved the positive energy on the video! ...Keep rollin'!

Do you have tips for finding a good saddle for a girl or do we just focus on finding a good cycling short?
@FifeFlow
@FifeFlow 4 года назад
tizben I think both the chamois and the saddle matter! I tried a couple different seats and they are not equal. I really like my WTB volt and I know WTB makes women specific saddles but I never have tried them. I would also mess around with the tilt and position of your saddle (forward/ back or tilt counter/clockwise) that can help aid with comfort. I also find that shorts matter a little too but not as much as the seat. I really enjoy my Kitsbow chamois and have been my favorite out of all the brands I’ve tried. Hopefully this helps! Good luck. ☺️

Regardless of the type of bike, the type of riding, or the type of rider, enders are fenders... people that don't ride much don't really care, people that ride a great deal have them mounted and ride with them most of the time.

Check out my ebike review of the Fezzari Wire Peak out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M6G0gofloT8.html I think e bikes can be great for beginners but normal bikes are fine as well. I have fallen off a couple of times and yes I’m still scared of riding certain things, but that’s a great part about biking is that you can progress and there is a safe way to do it. Start easy first on gravel roads then try out some green trails and make your way up from there!
