Are Car Covers Good Or Bad? | 2 MINUTE TUESDAY

I'm not a fan of using a car cover for this simple reason: I'd rather wash off dust than remove scratches. Yes, if your paint is soft enough, a car cover can scratch it no matter how careful you are. If maintaining a swirl-free paint job is important to you, it might be time to reconsider using that cover.

Funny story - The image in this thumbnail was stolen by one of those shady Ebay/Amazon sellers and they photoshopped their car cover on it. So I stole it back and used it for this video. Suck on that.

Do you think I should use one for my car that is in an apartment parking lot (outdoors) because lawn people come by randomly once a month and I get grass, etc all over the sides of my car. And it's a brand new 2020 Rav4. I bought a $34 car cover off eBay, but am hesitant to break it open and use it.

Covers arent for those with a car garage guy. Its for those that have to park their car under trees near sprinklers or under lamp posts. This means sap, water marks, and bird crap

Issue is UV damage etc. Which is what a car cover is mainly used for or hail protection etc. For dust protection in a sealed garage you use a soft dust cover.

What if it's stored outside ? surely covering against the elements is preferable to being uncovered

I think the point is, if you remove the car cover, the material might scratch the paint not right away but slowly over time. I've read this a lot that it might also fade the car color.

My truck sits outside under a tree and gets pooped on constantly. Light scratches are 100% better than the bird dropping getting etched into the paint.

If you have a car sitting outside in the sun for days on end, a good quality car cover would be advisable. You need to start with a clean car, and keep up with putting on the car only on a clean car. If you wait too long and the car gets dirty, you need to wait before you use the cover again. I think for cars that sit for long periods of time out in the elements, especially bright hot sun, a car cover makes great sense. But a daily driver sitting in a garage, I wouldn't use one.

I drive a truck for a living. Therefore, I park my car at the terminal for up to a month at a time. I've been using car covers for the last 10 years without issues. One might be concerned about a little dust scratching the paint. I'm more concerned about the effects of UV rays, bird crap, and foliage. If you get it washed and drive it one mile before parking, there won't be enough dirt on it to make any difference. As far as storing your car inside, the dust that accumulates on the surface isn't the reason for a cover. The indoor cover is there to protect the areas where dust can get into the car, like the cowell and inner portions of the doors, hood, and trunk lid.

A cover is still better than nothing especially if stored outside. Bird droppings will do much more harm than dust. If one is keeping their car in a museum is one thing. No one is suggesting using a heavy compound every time there's minor surface imperfections. Certainly want car pretty clean when placing a cover on it. It also depends on the quality of the cover. Bird droppings is a lot worse no question. Some things are unavoidable. One goes to a ball game or a movie or out to dinner, and sees bird droppings on their car. Light buffing with light polish shouldn't hurt anything. All cars will get scratches from things in the air while driving on highways.

Is it true that if you use car covers especially on your cars that are parked outside in the hot summertime, that they can eventually cause your clearcoat to break which would affect the paint? My Autobody shop guy told me that a car’s paint needs to breathe especially after it’s been painted or else the clear coat breaks through and that’s really bad!

The instruction manual for my Rav4 does not tell me to park the car in a garage or in a shaded spot. It also doesn't tell me to use a car cover. What it does tell me is to keep the car clean and waxed. The car is ceramic coated and I regularly protect the coating with a ceramic sealant. The car sits outside. You wouldn't believe how much damage to the clear coat and paint trapped moisture can do. It would be much better to neglect the car outside than to throw a car cover.

I also own a landscaping company. The commercial mowers have enough power to suck up and throw tiny sand particles. You might as well be sandblasting your new paint if you do not cover for the landscapers. The key is just don't be lazy about it and you never have a problem
@Greataardvark

Many, many layers of wax to protect your paint before the cover goes on no matter what cover you buy. There is no aubstitute for a good layering of wax. I cover immediately after a wash and dry. It's true. Water will stay. If you cover it you're gambling on topcoat and moisture. I use one for a non waterproof daily. Only a temporary measure.

I need some help with this subject, because my car sits outside, trees on one side baking sun on other. I had a lot of sun damage and marks from organic matter on my last car. I am trying to decide how to best deal with this. Car Port or garage is no go where I live, have dedicated stop but in a shared lot. What would you do if your car had to sit outside? Deal with scratches or deal with sun damage?
@CanadianGearhead
@CanadianGearhead 4 года назад
It really depends on the condition of your paint to begin with. If it's already scratched, you don't have much to lose by using a cover aside from it causing damage on windy days. If the paint is in decent shape, I'd ceramic coat it and keep it as clean as possible. Tough call
@crazedbrazy617bh
@crazedbrazy617bh 4 года назад
@@CanadianGearhead Thanks man! It is a tough call, I think I am going to try the cover for a while, keep tight and snug on car and do regular inspections on the paint. If the scratching starts getting bad I will probably stop and try other alternative

Bro, your car is stored in a garage.... The dust... Either blow it off or wash it off. Like everyone is commenting, "worried about UV damage". I really don't care about micro dust scratches. I care about UV damage, clear coat peeling off, black plastic fading, yellowing headlights, etc.

They're just cars. Not tribal fetish objects. For people who OWN cars as opposed to leasing, and have to park outside, UV damage, tree sap, etc are the prime considerations in keeping the clear coat "healthy" for a protracted period.
