Is there a legitimate reason behind ISP-imposed data caps, or are they just a money-making scheme?

Not only have they gotten away with putting caps on “unlimited” internet, but now they’ve been given the go-ahead to give priority to certain traffic and websites. What’s amazing is that they sold it as freeing the internet and my fellow Americans bought it. Hook, line and sinker.

@@thepedrorriva In most areas of the United States consumers have limited options for broadband providers. In my area for example, I have only one choice for high-speed internet access that is above 15 megabits per second and that is Comcast. Because the cable companies have regions they have divided up amongst themselves to prevent competing with each other, they can charge whatever they want for the most part and get away with it as there are no other options available that offer similar speeds.

No, Americans didn't support the net neutrality repeal. The vast majority was against it. It was literally shoved down our throats. They pretended people wanted it, to the extent of rigging their own polling system. All of this was proven but nothing stopped it, despite the large pushes to do so. Now politicians have moved on to their usual set of topics to argue endlessly about.

@@thepedrorriva There is a cost, but it's so low that its ridiculous to mention. And yeah, some competitive offers from ISPs would be great, but there is no competition in most areas in the US. When Google fiber came to my area comcast hooked people with the promise of a lifetime rate, going to door to door to push it. When Google fiber stopped comcast no longer fulfilled their promise of the lifetime rate. So their version of competitive offers is much different, as would be for a company that has a monopoly.

In the US ISPs also charge for speed, it's just that they happen to implement data caps on TOP of that (and typically you get a higher data cap when you pay for a faster speed). I'm with AT&T right now for Internet and get a 50Mbps connection (well, that's debatable, as I've seen it *peak* at 50Mbps, but it probably sits around 30Mbps most of the time) with a 1TB data cap for $40/mo. Although the price goes up as soon as my contract expires, so I have to stay locked in if I want a good rate like that (I think it's like $70/mo if you're out of contract).

Most people on capped connections live in rural areas on farmland. The only person I know on a limited connection is on a ranch that's over 30 miles from the nearest town and there literally isn't even another house for 10 miles in any direction. He's on a satellite internet connection and those can become congested very easily and very quickly. Running 30 miles of cable to one house is more expensive than every internet bill he could pay for in his entire life.

As long as your country ISP thinks they can control your transfers, they don't mind which year it is. Trust me i live in country where people are escaping from because of the suicidal goverment practices that people here seems don't mind and they are fine with and its not even Asia is in EU and the internet speeds - if they are wireless HSPA/LTE - they are limited Jewish style so they can squize you for more. Onli exception is that the connection from the cable is often not limited, but like i don't have acces to any cable besides the overprised ADSL on the phone line that only 1 ISP is providing here right now and ist more expensive than wireless ones so i have no choice. I can not get some beter line installment so i am screwed for this wireless type of services. For the wireless ones y6ou have option to buy "unlimited" packet, but like i sayed earlier we are scammed so for us the "unlimited" means 100GB/month but that is when you choice the less scamming one because there are even worse leechers on the wireless scam marketplace with cyrogrphs tying you to live with this horrible thing not to say they limit you with speeds on the ssame antena everywhere when it's more overused by other users. I only wish that the scam will end as the 5G technology will arrive and get real popular everywhere so the internet costs will be more standarised everywhere.I think nobody will go for limits and fake no limits with bandwith that high. Only time can tell how it is going to change if it will ever in close future, but right now i dont heve time to wait with nothing and you people stay less ignorant if you dont have at least more information, if it's sarcastic in this case it's not that clear as i observed the tendency to be less clear to tell if you are serious or not.

read the comments you noobs. don't believe everything you hear even if it's from LTT. data caps on hardwired cable/dsl type internet connections (and we have FIBER as an option too) do NOT have caps, at least I've never heard of any. maybe they're out there, but MOST people have at least 2 major ISP's to choose from, sometimes more... not everyone, but most people have choice. and if you want to spend more money, there's always choice... i'm talking about reasonably priced choice. no data caps in America, don't be fooled. only by cell phone companies, and even then there are unlimited options. I mean think about it logically. You seriously think America, the wealthiest country in the world, who invented the internet, is going to have some of the worst service in the world - to customers who can afford to pay a lot for it? That's just retarded, use your brain. America has the best, as usual.

As much as I hate Australian ISPs I will say this for them - they've gone from small data caps with charges for over use, to small data caps with throttling only for overuse, to now incredibly large data caps with reasinably priced unlimited plans for (relatively) reasonable prices. The US seems to have decided to regress on this one.

On average bad American internet is better than bad Australian internet but American internet in rural areas can be incredibly bad, and a lot more Americans live in rural areas than Australians. And Australian internet is (far too slowly, but still) getting better, while most of those dead areas in the US are even more stagnant than ours.
@liucyrus22
@liucyrus22 6 лет назад
Just curious why did the AUS rollout the nbn?
@joechief2456
@joechief2456 6 лет назад
Basically the left leaning party decided that ISPs were taking a too slow, too hacky, too short term approach to delivering effective internet to the population, and realised that the economic advantages of widely available high speed internet (including direct effects on government coffers) more than paid for the cost of rolling out a network consisting of a mix of fibre to the premises for most Australians and high speed, affordable satellite links for those too rural to otherwise reach (who depend on high speed internet even more than urban people in some cases). On hearing of this plan ISPs started dragging their feet even more, even completely cancelling upgrade plans, anticipating that they would be rendered redundant by NBN. Then we had a change of government to the conservative party, based on other issues (they had to promise at least some kind of NBN to get enough votes), and we're now getting a hacky, hodge-podge rollout that's arguably worse than what the ISPs would have rolled out had they been left alone (outside of the satellite links, those are still pretty good). Had we gotten the real network we would be on a relatively slow but steady path over the next 10 years to having all Australians connected to the internet (and all other telecommunications infrastructure) with high speed, high reliability connections that would allow small business and startups to do new, innovative things that depend on fast internet, allow farmers to consistently conduct their business, allow telehealth and enable consumers to use high bandwidth consuming services (which would create more of a market for those start ups as well). Think of it as the internet equivalent of socialised healthcare, except that if we hadn't had the mid rollout change of government it would have been deployed by a government that has a successful track record with socialised healthcare already (which removes many of the arguments that go against socialised healthcare in the US's case).

"mobile data had this, of course" Yes, we also got mobile data caps here. But, like DSL, DOCSIS or FTTH, LTE don't need a cap. There is no real finite maximum. We all use our mobiles, laptops and tablets in the beginning of every month without a bottleneck, at least i didn't notice one since new year 2012. And today netflix, youtube and other streaming services don't count into my mobile data plan. Mobile Carrier also used this scare tactic with SMS in the 90's. It is just a lie to profit from "thin air". It isn't normal just because everyone is used to it... maybe it is.

The funny thing is the majority of their cell data plans that people get are cheap as fuck and don't have data caps, but their internet does. Which is the opposite of the problem we have in Canada; our internet is really good and not that expensive, but our cell phone plans go through the roof in pricing and you don't even get unlimited data usage (unlimited cellular data literally doesn't exist in Canada anymore, and hasn't for YEARS; basically since a year or 2 after cell phones first were invented lol)

Basically, the reason why internet is so expensive in the U.S. vs elsewhere is because ISPs generally don't have to compete like they do in other parts of the world. This would be fine if they were regulated like a utility, which internet should be a utility, but because it's not, we pay sky high prices for very little internet.

Grymyrk Australia has pretty weird Interest situation. Some people have nbn optic fibre to the premises, which gives then 500 mbps down and up. The liberal government stopped connecting it to the household, but still rolled some out, which results in most of Australia having 7-9 mbps down and 1mbps up. Most capital cities (Melbourne ect) have 25mbps down. I am extremely lucky to live in one of three towns where a company (iiNet) rolled out the coaxial cable. I now pay 90 AUD a month to get 300mbps down and 50mbps up with unlimited data caps.

well, bearing in mind the only high-speed way to the rest of the world is through massively expensive underwater cables, it makes sense. Underwater fiber cables are way more expensive than regular ones which are buried under roads and pavement. This is because of the cost of building one and maintaining is high (because they need a specialized boat) and they have a HUMUNGOUS amount of different layers to protect the cable from water damage... America and other countries that don't depend on under-sea connections have no excuse...

In South Africa a majority of providers have soft-caps. If you use all your data, you arent cut off but your internet is EXTREMELY slow. But you can also pay more for uncapped.

Just canceled with Xfinity/Comcast. In the suburbs around Minneapolis/Saint Paul Minnesota I was paying $95 / month for 75mb/s download speeds with a 1TB cap. My bill, since declining an upgrade bundle in July 2019, has been around $200 a month. When I called to complain and demand an explanation in Augusy the customer support asked what I used the internet for, I shared with them what is connected and what I do. The bill kept coming in sky high. They then called me and were excited to tell me that they increased my speeds at no additional cost in September. Come to find out when I called about my bill in October that I WOULD be getting charged for this free upgrade, so I canceled the upgrade. Oct 1st through present day I had barely used the internet like I had in the summer, and for November-December I got a bill for $360 roughly. I called them and voiced my displeasure and canceled my internet. Xfinity/Comcast dropped the bill from $360 down to $171 with no explanation and I'm just shaking my head in disbelief. 3 years of being their customer and I've never had to deal with such BS. They even tried saying that in Nov 2019, when my wife spoke to them, that we had signed up for a 1 year contract which she had been questioned on, but DID not agree to. They signed us up anyways and where ready to hold us "accountable" accept I just so happened to call and cancel service within the 30 day period. An absolute joke!!

Some time ago in Brazil we also had data caps for a while (for less than a year, if I remember correctly), but the government intervened and prohibited ISPs from limiting data. They also claimed the traffic was too much for them to handle, so they needed to limit data usage. This year they are trying to do it again. Unfortunately we still have a really crappy broadband service. I live in a city with more than 2 million inhabitants, and contacted my ISP to increase my internet speed several times, but they always say that due to "technical limitations" they can't increase it above 5 Mbps. I would like to change to another ISP, there aren't any others at my neighborhood.

Most ISP's in New Zealand offer unlimited plans, but they are generally quite expensive. Fiber plans are also very expensive due to the government essentially awarding one private company control over the entire infrastructure, giving them our tax money to build it and then let them charge us out the ass. Mobile data is also extremely expensive, at around $10 per GB. Fuck'n BS I tell you! Socialism for the rich, crony capitalism for the rest of us!

i remember this datacap isp's used to have. but this was a long long long time ago (10-15 years or so) to get around it, our county (västerbotten) had 2 local dc++ dmz hubs for sharing data, and then you could dl how much material you wanted. just thinking back to this is so nostalgic. funny though this video is 3 years old, not 10-15. guess we were a bit ahead of others. but this small problem led to all swedish isp's dropped their caps and went unlimited data for all.

One of the few good things about the UK is data caps are really rare and usually on the most budget plans, or the cheaper end of high speed plans, but unlimited is as cheap as £15/$20 a month for a slower speed or £50/$65pm for a 300Mb connection.

There is an additional reason caps are imposed. Most providers, like Comcast, are also selling content (cable channels etc...). Which means that online streaming is a direct competitor. It is a way of encouraging you to keep your cable when most reasonable people would simply cancel cable and stream everything otherwise.
