Like, Share & Subscribe! Now that I am riding some more ready made e-bikes. The biggest differance I feel is not the mid or hub. Not the tire size. But the weight that the bike comes in at. Do you ever notice this? Thanks for watching and enjoy.

Two years ago I got a fat tire folding Mars by Heybike as that convinced the manager to allow that in my rental unit. Now I never fold it. 😂 The Mars is 66# stock with the battery which is 9#. It was the lightest eBike of all the folders found at the time & with a 2 yr warranty. Right now it's about 80# with 2 baskets & a spare battery. The chain, chain ring, derailleur, cable & shifter were removed to save weight. AWD on the front would add maybe 15#-20# so about 100# total when finished.

Thanks for watching Steve. For the trails I like to get down to around the 50 pound mark with battery and everything else on it. Out on the Greenways. It’s not too bad to have a heavier bike. I guess what I’m learning is to appreciate different bikes for different jobs. Enjoy your evening.

My old road bike is about half the weight of my eBike, before I put packs and other stuff on it. A lot of that extra weight is the motor and battery, but the eBike frame is steel and there's more of it than the aluminum frame on the road bike. The front fork suspension adds quite a bit, and I have a front basket on the eBilke with dump pouches attached, with stuff in them. The eBike has disk brakes, compared to lighter rim brakes on the analog bike. Lats weekend I got to a point on a long ride where I had expected a slope, but found stairs, about 20 steps up. My choices were to get up the stairs or go back about 2 miles and go round. I elected to get up the stairs, pushing the bike and using the motor to help. I managed it, but it as tough. Had I been on the old bike, I could have put it on my shoulder and carried it up quite easily. But then I probably wouldn't have made it there in the first place.

The heavier bikes are not bad out on the Greenways. I still like my light and flixable bike when I get into the tight and twisting. Thanks so much for watching.

Agree completely; weight is important for off road, not so much on the road. My lightest bike is a vintage Fuji Sagres with a quad butted Valite frame, but of course that's not an e-bike and never will be. It's actually easier to pedal than an e-bike on low assist. My off road bike is quite a bit heavier due to the wheels and budget frame, but I can still pick it up with a couple of fingers. My e-bike is at the other end of the spectrum: 68 pounds with battery! However, it's a RadMini 4 folding bike that fits in the hatch of my car like they were made for each other, and that ability to fold comes with extra hardware and reinforcements. When you take it apart you can see the hidden extra gussets in the aluminum frame. In this case the weight is worth it though, as it feels like a solid bike, and I abuse the mess out of it with jumps and occasional off roading, on top of being used as a rescue bike. Thanks for the video!

Thanks much for watching. I guess I am starting to really appreciate the different jobs that different bikes can do. I don't have to have just one ebike. May as well not look for one that will do everything. But for 1 to do each thing

Thanks for watching Steve. They’re typically pretty easy. Things like the front light and disabling the brake cut off I can be a little bit more time consuming because you have to undo the cable management. But the rear rack, side stand, things like that. I just unbolt them. It does make a big difference in the really tight and technical off road areas that I enjoy. Enjoy your day.

I couldn't see the bird, but the only red bird that comes to mind are male Cardinals, they are a hair bigger than robins. But to your question "Ebikes too heavy?". I think the answer depends on your use. There are light e-bikes for commuting, a few for folding/travel, and the eMBTs. I think the more 'street cruiser' and moped types are getting heavier but that doesn't really matter as they are commonly used with the throttle.

You know you make a very good point. And I think that’s one thing. I’m starting to learn how to appreciate. Different bikes for different jobs. Some jobs. The weight is not a big deal. Other jobs it is. Thanks much for watching and enjoy your evening.

I've seen many people riding those DIY Ebikes. they seems to be a lot lighter. But that gigantic front wheel hub motor makes them look off balance. I could see the bird but it sounds like it could be an Osprey. They are often seen around bodies of water.

Not sure what that bird was. My trek bike is a DIY. Of course I use a Middrive and it really has very little weight to it. I guess the biggest thing I’m learning is to appreciate different bikes for different jobs and stop trying to build or buy a unicorn. Lol. Thanks so much for watching.

Glad to hear you are coming around to the hub drives. I love them and always prefer them for my age to my mid-drive. Wife is completely the opposite, she loves her mid-drive. Always enjoy your rides...nice mix of road and gravel to me. Be safe and have a great trip.

Not sure if it is coming around to the hub Drive or if it is appreciating different bikes for different jobs. I think if I still had to have one and one only, it would have to be a hub. Really like that trek bike. But with Miles we put on the maintenance schedule is pretty heavy. Thanks for watching Bruce. Enjoy your evening.

I’ve run both, and found mids to be better suited for bad hills and heavy loads. Then there’s dealing with *flats…*
@RVEnthusiast

@@dennisyoung4631 Maybe the newer middrives are better than mine. Mine is 250W and just not enough power for this old guy. ;-)

@@RVEnthusiast Uh, running a BBS-HD here - nominally 1,000 watts or so, but can be “turned up” some with the right software - or, with mods, can do about 2+ kw. At the stock, but turned-up level, that’s ~ 1500 watts. It comes in handy when there’s a *bad* hill and you’ve got a trailer with groceries. Best make sure your battery has close to a full charge, then.

If given a choice between lightness and power, i'll take lightness any day. Switching from a light normal bike to a heavy e bike was not good for me.

Thanks for watching Pedro. I was hoping we was going to start seeing bikes become lighter and lighter. Looks like that’s not going to happen. So I will just have to have different bikes for different jobs. I’m OK with that too I guess.

It can *really* matter if you need to carry the bike up the stairs!

I wrote that because I need to carry *mine* up a flight of stairs whenever I ride - and I cannot afford the operating costs of a more conventional form of transport. While public transport *is* available in my area, I try to avoid taking it as much as possible. It tends to be *slower* and involve substantial waiting *in a public setting.* This can be mentally and physically draining - and potentially hazardous as well. Finally, public transport doesn’t *go* to some of these locations. No, mine *ISN’T* light. It’s home-assembled, and has a large battery for long distance riding. Wednesday (groceries, then a doctor visit) was ~ 28 miles. That’s a “medium” distance. Beginning-of-the-month bill-paying is just short of *50* miles round trip.
