For the Zoe it could be that your previous insurance company with the above market quote needs to change their customer mix to suit their underwriting targets. A big underwriter often wants a certain portfolio of risk and will price accordingly. i.e. already have enough vehicles or customers similar to your profile, so rather than refuse, the quote goes up. It's so that the underwriter doesn't end up with too many policies written for a specific vehicle type, age group, geographic location, usage profile, etc...

@rico4229
@rico4229 8 месяцев назад
EV's are not randomly bursting into flames like the click bait media would like you to believe. They are vastly less likely to catch fire. If any diesel for example has a vehicle fire , you can guarantee that car will be a write off. The replacement cost of say a BMW 5 series is comparable to an equivalent ev. Plus all modern cars are difficult to repair and much more likely these days to be written off. You can't blame EVs for a classic Land rover insurance going up 70 % that is far more likely to be insurance companies cashing in.

@BonannoCM 8 месяцев назад
@@williammeek4078 That's not the issue of major concern. I've personally witnessed a handful or so regular cars catch fire ... I once lived in an area of extreme high temperature and terrain that required full effort from gas engines. The fires, at a minimum, eventually did significant damage, and frequently destroyed the vehicle, but it took time. The car would smoke and the driver would get out. A firetruck would arrive and a few minutes later it's out. EV fires involving the battery are orders of magnitude faster, more intense, and difficult to extinguish. Atleast an ICE car gives some kind of dashboard warning if it reaching a dangerous temperature. I've never seen a report of anything similar when an ev battery self-ignites.

It's because they know that certain catagories of drivers are more risky they others. For example, teenagers have more accidents than 50 year olds. Therefore teenagers have to pay more. And if you drive an expensive car you have to pay more because if you have a wreck, the insurance company will probably have to pay more. And so on and so on. What insurance companies don't do is what you're suggesting, take a low risk group and raise their premiums to cover the company's known added exosure to a high risk group. If they did that then some other insurance company who was properly calcualting, and properly setting fair premiums for that sub group, would simply steal those customers. We helped buy a 2018 Zoe for my daughter, 2 weeks ago and before we got it I shopped around for quotes and found, as you did, that all are around £480-600 for my daughter and me and my wife to drive. However, knowing this, what surprised me was that her existing insurer still had 2 months left on the policy and only wanted £30 for the 2 months on the Zoe! That equates to £180 per year! How does that work?
@SidBonkers51

Interested to hear your story. Regarding your rational for higher premiums on renewal there is no stochastic increas in risk because you have not had an accident. Trust me., I did risk assessment as a profession. If you flip a coin ( a fair coin) an it comes down heads five times in a row the chances of a head on the next flip is still 50:50. There us no actuarial reason to increase, or decrease your premium. The reason, in my view, is the insurance companies are banking on inertia. People tend not to shop around and just pay the extra. This leaves them with extra cash available for the introductory offers.

As living within the EU, we have of course the advantage to insure our cars where ever within the EU, I can get a Belgian or Polish insurer if I like, so there is a lot of competition, it is also regulated. Britain was part of that but now has to cope on it´s own, so prices rise, and if there is no regulation, prices rise more. So the AMI here in Spain can be as low as 127 Euros per year, unlimited km and 4 drivers (over 25) I own a Tesla Model 3, 4 years old, going 20000km a year, costing just over 400 Euros a year, every year I do not claim with the company, I get 5% off. At the moment I insure any vehicle with 65% of there standard rate. I could not even think about having several cars in the UK today, it would be prohibitively expensive.

Here you get better rates insuring all cars with the same insurance and there are online brokers that make your live easier. What I see really critical are the "gigacasts" introduced by Tesla and others. Fixing minor issues of a gigacast part is really expensive as to replace parts of a gigacast your only option is to buy a full gigacast as replacement part and then you need someone to cut that part properly and another one who is an expert in welding. Bills will skyrocket and so will insurance rates.

Chatting to the broker they tell me that because of parts supply issues the cost of repairs has spiralled and availability is still poor. The big problem then is that insurers write the cars off instead of repairing them and write offs cost more than repairs thus the premium prices are pushed up. This is an issue for all cars, not just ev's. All insurance is going through the roof at the moment. I am hoping that things settle down becore March and our ID.3 renewal.

There are 4 non EV cars in my household and all of our insurance renewals went up more than inflation this year. I think that most of the increase is due to the fact that when you’re a new customer you get an extra discount and you loose that the second year you insure with them plus you get charged for inflation. So that’s why it pays to shop around. Then on the other hand if a certain model has an excessive amount of accidents or claims then they increase the insurance premiums for that car.

Its the repair costs and liability. The repair costs for a minor EV collision can be ridiculous but whats even worse is that insurers have discovered that EV battery fires are nearly impossible to extinguish...and even when the fire is out the battery can reignite or explode for several more days. Where I live the proceedure for when a Tesla catches on fire in a parking lot: 1. The firefighters have to evactuate people from the area because of toxic fumes and allow the fire to burn itself out, which takes hours. 2.Then they load the burnt wreck onto a truck and the fire engine escorts the truck to an outdoor gun range the Police have. 3.A "Fire Watch" is established , someone with basic firefighting gear is present to put out fires caused by the battery re-igniting and/or exploding for the next 3 days. 4. A hazmat team is brought in to decontaminate the parking lot , truck and gun range. 5. Insurer loses their mind when they are handed the bills for all of this.

It would also be nice to see what the insurance company insures against, do they insure the car, or do they insure you, i ask because they ask you the value of your vehicle, then they ask you about your driving experience, then they also ask your age, so which part of this is actually insured. you also have to factor in the wage increase of insurance employees which would probably increase by something like 2.5% to 3.5%, and the amount of people employed by them, plus their targeted profit margin considering most only answer telephone calls.
