I once leased a Toyota RAV4 hybrid, the manufacturer claimed 54mpg, the real world was 36. I returned it and got my money back. I then Leased a Mitsubishi PHEV for 3 years 30,000 miles and got 105 mpg. Free motorway charging in those days. Two pure electric cars since, no going back ever.
@thelaserhive3368
@thelaserhive3368 5 месяцев назад
PHEV mpg is meaningless though isn’t it? If you always do local journeys and never go beyond the electric range you get an infinite number of miles per gallon. If you do a journey of 500 miles you probably get 30mpg as the small amount of electric juice is gone after 25 miles. BTW, I am currently a PHEV driver…..
@garrycroft4215
@garrycroft4215 5 месяцев назад
@@thelaserhive3368 I changed it at least once every day 34 miles of electric only. Used wrongly they do around 34 mpg, I got 105 over a three year 30,000 mile lease the electricity was free then but now it would get you a 75 mpg equivalent at todays prices. I had a BMW i3s for the next 3 years and now have a Smart #1 Brabus. It’s a keeper I’m never changing it.
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 5 месяцев назад
@@thelaserhive3368 But the point is that these were early PHEV's, and newer ones will improve on that. There is alleged to be legislation on the way, requiring new PHEV's do able to travel X number of miles on electricity alone. Although the distance X will eventually be, has still to be decided. Plus as charging infrastructure improves, it should become possible to charge fairly quickly, more often on longer trips, which improves efficiency further still....
@thelaserhive3368
@thelaserhive3368 5 месяцев назад
@@Brian-om2hh I can’t see that. A PHEV ( much as I love my Countryman) will never be as efficient electrically as a proper BEV as it is carrying around an extra engine, gearbox and fuel tank. My 2nd gen PHEV gets maybe 3 miles per kWh at best. Interested to know what legislation you’re talking about though. BTW my PHEV goes back this month and my next car is a Niro EV that should be markedly more efficient and cheaper to run.
@TB-up4xi
@TB-up4xi 5 месяцев назад
I think the real range extender EV's (none available outside of China) are interesting - a full BEV that can do 500km/310mi on a charge plus a small gasoline engine ad tank that can add an extra 100km/62mi in an emergency.

I used to hire Betamax videos from my local Blockbuster store and they included some films up to 3 hours long. They were more compact than VHS with at least as good sound and vision quality. But battery electric vehicles are here to stay, and sales (both new and pre-used) will rapidly expand this year, way beyond what all the pundits are suggesting.

And Betamax morphed into professional Betacam, Digital Betacam and HDCAM. Whereas all VHS derived professional formats (MII, D9 and others) flunked. So Beta had the last laugh. Sony made more money from Beta and its derivatives than anyone ever did from VHS. So the whole analogy is just rubbish.

We actually had a Betamax vide recorder and it was far better in every way, tapes lasted over 3 hours but the main reason it failed was Sony is a Japanese company and Japan had strict restrictions on pornography but there was no restrictions on VHS and the porn industry jumped on the idea of home made amateur videos and also the ability to sell copies of the films. There’s a very strong connection between CES/new technology and the adult entertainment industry. The only parallel I can think of between EVs and porn is I regularly get called by both male and female genitalia for driving a Tesla 😀😀😀

Again, ot took around 30 years for the gasoline vehicle to catch on. First, they were very expensive. Then, they had a lot of problems to be worked out. Finally, a remarkable invention came about for them. The electric starter first put into a 1912 Cadillac made life a lot easier. Oh, did you know that at first, after every drive, the transmission had to be taken apart and greased. That changed as well. Give EVs time to evolve.

The problem when ICE car prices are compared to an Electric version, is that they compare the smallest engine and lowest spec, wheras the EV will be the fastest engine equivalent and is often far better specified as standard. As it happens betamax was a better item. So with this if ithe EV is Betamax, then this time it will win!

We had one EV Evangelist in our family , she is a school teacher and talked for several years about buying an electric car and told us all we needed to buy one NOW . 18 months ago she got a full electric skoda enyaq on a PCP . after one year of nightmare, of range anxiety and 3 times being stranded plus costly and time consuming charging driving the 620 mile round trip to visit her father she has changed it for a petrol skoda at enormous financial cost . Our conclusion is that for all but the committed enthusiast that makes the use of their car their main focus and passion the currant generation of electric cars and electric infrastructure are not fit for purpose. Hydrogen and CNG look to be far more user friendly solution. Running my 119g co2 bmw 520d for another 10 years looks a lot better for the planet than building an electric car anyway.

I've had both Seat and Skoda cars and tbh I'd always buy one of the them in preference to the VW offering, the Mii Electric should never have been discontinued, it's a great little car. A lightly used Zoe is better value for similar or just a little more money and to me is the equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife, brilliant in town but it can hack it very well on longer journeys. Also I would set your video camera focus to manual as the autofocus was hunting quite a bit on this video and I found it rather distracting and irritating.

EV's from traditional ICE car-makers are probably "Betamax". The "VHS" equivalent is Tesla, who is being emulated by most Chinese EV start-ups. These Chinese EV makers are likely to be among the first to licence Tesla technology (both electo-mechanics, computer software and drivetain). The "traditional" auto industry does not have the skill, acumen, vision or capacity to manufacture cost-effective Tesla equivalents, and their EV offerings are expensive and inferior. This will ultimately lead to their demise, and the Chinese EV industry will not only be the global leader in EV's, but will dominate the market.

That Rutherford article was just pointless filler, but i can't remember the last time he's had anything particularly worthwhile to say. The Corsa price comparison doesn't stack up - the £19k ICE version is bottom of the range in terms of performance and trim. Regarding SEAT, I will buy whichever VAG car offers the best value - which has so far been four SEATs, one Skoda and one VW (the mighty e-up). I'd be sorry to see SEAT go.

Nice one again! IMHO Skoda has decided to be the Premium VAG brand , not the budget any more. Seat did provide this with the Mii and could do so for the entry EV. As for interiors they couldn't do worse than VW has with their iD's. The Betamax of cars is undoubtedly the Hydrogen powered cars, great quality but not technically viable. From a 1k mile Mokka E or a 37 mile MG5 for £17k there are plenty of newish/pre-reg cars for below £19k.

And what is the best-selling car in the world in 2023? Isn't the Tesla Model Y, by chance, an electric car? I have owned a Chinese electric car, Dacia Spring, for two years, which cost me about half of the cheapest petrol car (fixed 8,000 euros), and which consumes around 11 kWh/100km, i.e. the equivalent of 1.5l of gasoline/100km. In a maximum of 5 years, the cost of the car will be amortized only from the difference in the price of fuel, not to mention the almost complete lack of maintenance (no oil changes, filters, distributors, spark plugs, etc.).

It's not the world that I live in. The facts are that If you are depending on Lease companies and private companies to drive the NEW EV sales then there are going to be a few manufactures that will go out of business. There will then be a limited amount for the private buyer to purchase used. It's not long ago that ONTO went to the wall and many other lease companies are having to lower their rental prices due to low take up for EVs. Already there are doubts about the viabilty of Polestar, Fisker and Lucid. VW sales of EV's in China, their biggest market, have slumped. Ford are losing $30000 on each Lightning it makes and the dealers forecourts are full of unsold vehicles which they are paying interest on so likely insolvency looms for them. Then you have the new ZEV mandate which has already started where each manufacturer has to sell this year at least 22% of it's production as EV's and this will increase each year. I don't think looking at the EV future with rose tinted glasses is quite what the true facts are.

They were creating havoc with our warranty work, engineers were arriving late due to chargers either out of order or getting used, we were spending money on hotels when they could not get back in time. They were moaning that they were away from home at night and they just wanted their diesel cars back. I agree they are suitable as a play item or for someone with a very predictable route with charging facilities at home. Unfortunately for the future of EVs they need mass adoption as i think about 80% sales are to companies like us due to tax breaks. We are not alone in wanting rid of them, we certainly will not be buying anymore, I dread to think how much money the finance company is going to lose on them. This year should be interesting as they need to sell 22% of them and according to the trade they are saying they have no chance of selling them. Arnold Clark have changed some dealers Ito BYD dealers and our local ford one changed.
