A lot's said about electric cars reaching an earlier demise than their ICE equivelants - but is there any proof of that?

EV's are worth it as long as you have it's under warranty. These is not because the cars are useless but because there are very little investments in repairs infrastructure making the cost of repairs many times more than the value of the car. All cars can last for a very long time if the repair cost are bearable.

Sadly the Luddite tendency seems to hold sway over many of my contemporaries who otherwise come across as intelligent human beings. I know a gent who is a self confessed climate change denier who looked at me with a sort sympathetic quizzical look in his eye when I told him I had bought an MG4 eighteen months ago saying you’ll never sell it ! the battery will be dud in a couple of years ! chortle ..blah blah . So having just passed the 10k miles I did a rough calculation on what it has cost in ‘fuel’ compared to our 11 year old Zafira diesel which for its type Is exceptionally economical at about 15p per mile approx. Roughly with a few public charger rip offs included I reckon 2-1/2 p per mile . The charging situation for public chargers now means we can go anywhere with few exceptions without range anxiety. We have intelligent Octopus (Available to all regardless of solar pv etc ) which we also had installed 3 years ago. Yes expensive and we can barely afford it but I then again I feel giving my Luddite mates a ride in the car and it doesn’t burst into flames or runout of juice is a positive influence.Rock on Tommy good work !

The MacMaster said this. but the batteries are fully recycled. and Tesla model S have been on the road since built. There are 2014 Tesla model S. listed on autotrader £24K so does not not end that they will only last a few years. the loss of leaf is simple no battery management makes there far more to be scrapped, but the car would be reused. The question would be is condition. after 10 years how much is being spent to keep a petrol car on the road. how much HP has it lost. since the engine is high levels of tar etc. on its moving parts. Also how many services and number of spark plugs, oil filters, oil has been put in the car, and cost vs costs for EV's when a petrol car has over 2000 moving parts. vs 20 or so.

@adrianwood2566 4 месяца назад
Articles I have seen - approximately 95% of the materials in an EV battery. The purity of the recycled materials is on par with freshly mined minerals, meaning that batteries can be recycled over and over again. Apple have also committed to only using recycled cobalt in the next couple of years for example. All of this will come and improve in time as there isn’t the volume of recycling for more players to get involved. As one company says 7 million metric tons of EV batteries will be eligible for recycling by 2035, representing more than €15 billion. The value of the metals makes it viable. The amount of mandatory recycling also ramps up the closer we get to 2035.

As a die hard petrolhead AND an EV owner here’s my take on it. A large majority of EV owners (me included) are impressed at just how well they drive. That being said, anyone who wants the full driving experience when they get behind the wheel of a car (say, for fun) would never choose electric as it’s not an immersive experience and would never be nostalgic about one to the point that it would be considered a classic, with the resultant strong value associated with in demand old classic cars. So in effect I guess a lot of EV drivers probably do consider their car a ‘white good’. As EVM pointed out in a recent Vlog, old EV’s can be problematic to get repaired when they are out of warranty. Presently I’d wager that more than 80% of all EV’s currently on the road today are still covered by a manufacturers warranty so this is very much a problem for the future that should be addressed now, but isn’t (Much like the obviously inadequately growing public charging networks). Very few traditional garages will adapt to maintain EV’s until they see reason to do so (due to the huge cost involved in the transition) this will have a large impact on the desirability of an ‘old’ EV which could make ownership possible to a group who operate within the realm of ‘bangernomics’ (doing most of the maintenance and repairs themselves) EV’s are far more hazardous to repair than an ICE equivalent and I have no doubt that sometime in the future there will sadly be fatalities. At this point (as they did with Gas Boilers) the Gov could step in and restrict or ban home repairs on EV’s. So, in that regard, and with a very long answer to your very short question, yes, I can see EV’s becoming a disposable item.

I suppose on what your interests are, if you like driving cars, then yes driving an ICE is fun. But not everone enjoys driving; I have been driving since 1987 and frankly in my opinion it's not fun, it's just a way of getting from A to B which is occasionally frustrating, stressful or just plain tedious. I find driving my wife's EV a far more pleasant experience than all the ICE cars I have driven over the last 36 years (I don't have an EV yet), but it isn't fun. Horses for courses.
@RichardButlerUK

everything (in our modern European world) is a disposable item. when I was at school, I had friends that worked at a HiFi and TV rental and repair shop. no one bothers to repair TVs any more, it goes down the recycling centre and people buy a new one. about 10 or 20 years ago, the washing machine repair man came to visit and changed the brushes in the motor when it didn't work. now we just buy a new machine and they take the old one away I do computers for a living. I used to repair and upgrade them, by diagnosing and swapping out duff boards/modules. Now the whole machine gets scrapped and you buy a new one. last week the other half was trying to get a battery replaced in her watch, and was being quotes prices that made me think that you might as well bin it and buy another. the consumers of the western world have outsourced the supply of so much manufacturing to China, to the point where nothing is economic to repair, everything is disposable, it's cheaper to buy a newer, next generation product from the other side of the planet, rather than spending money on a repair behing done by a skilled engineer from the next village.

But, huge depreciation on mega-expensive cars is common, irrespective of what powers the car. For example, a brand new Merc S350Ld AMG Line Executive can be bought for about £90,000 after discounts. A 3 year old example of that same car, with 56,000 miles is selling on Autotrader for £38,980 = a 43% residual value. A brand new Porsche Taycan 4S can be bought for around £86,500 after discounts. At 3 years and 48,000 miles, they're selling for £45,950 = a 53% residual value. At the cheaper end of the market... A brand new Vauxhall Corsa-e GS can be bought for £19,750. 3 years and 41,000 miles later it's selling for £11,690 = a 59% residual value.

Problem is MOST modern cars are on a value based time limit, shear cost of replacement parts will kill most way before they are anywhere near as old as the current road fleets. I mean who would have thought that owning a porsche would be risky as people will steal your headlights ( and quite destructively too) simply because the replacement headlights are several thousands of pounds new. Add in that the vast majority of cars are now non diy repair friendly ie smart phones on wheels, gone are the days of weekend tinkering, and hello to £70 an hour garage costs, I personally am looking down the barrel for a clutch and 2 rear springs for a Hyundai 2009 i30 costing ball park £900 and thats after shopping round, main dealer wanted £1100

Some fair points made, another one to look at is , if you are left with the electric car and you decide to scrap it will people be willing to take it off your hands like an ICE car, proberbly not as you just cannot crush it because of the danger to the batteries so I honestly think they will charge you to have it scrapped.

As you said, the aftermarket repairs are key. I'd love to buy a high mileage Model S but if there were to be a problem with one battery cell, I'd probably be screwed. I don't think it helps that most mechanics seem to be burying their heads in the sand rather than embracing it and retraining. That said, the long battery and drive train warranties have probably been hampering the uptake. 8 years ago EV sales were comparatively tiny, so there is still a small market for after market EV specialists. That can only grow over the next few years.

If the other commenter was correct and there is only 20 moving parts on EVs why would a mechanic retrain for that? He will already know how to repair them, it's an electronics technician that will be needed to repair EVs. In my opinion.

He is now seeking to make zero servicing of his ‘castings’ after a couple of years of decontenting. He doesn’t want to ‘invest’ further on maintenance/spares/repair capacity and infrastructure. The profit margin/cost reduction mania is killing the brand……..certainly not investing in it….beyond the talk, of course. Actually, based on present battery chemistry - of which newer chemistries are developing all the time - current estimates for the longevity of lithium ion batteries is around 200,000 miles in an EV. Considering the average mileage of a passenger vehicle when it goes to be scrapped is between 70,000 to 157,000 miles, depending on in which country it is being driven, then even current battery chemistry is more than adequate for the majority of car owners. Yes, there will ALWAYS be 'extreme examples', but for the majority of owners, EVs are going to last the course.

EVs will, unfortunately, be disposable "rubbish", once the powertrain or battery warranty has expired, if they have an inverter, motor or battery failure. This is not because they are necessarily unreliable but because high repair costs are making repairs uneconomic.

@@ziggarillo. Very "intelligent" argument you have made. 🤔 I drive an i3, only 6 months and 4k miles from end of battery warranty, and would like to keep it going indefinitely but BMW and their pricing structure for spare parts and lack of care for making exchange parts like the Electrical Machine, inverter and battery modules available will eventually kill these cars off long before they are worn out in the normal sense of the word. For the good of the environment, these cars could and should be supported for 20 years after end of manufacture. Don't take my word for it, just look at the plummeting residual values of EVs. They are no longer the economic proposition we were thinking only 12 months ago.

@jamesvdv0
@jamesvdv0 3 месяца назад
@@imbethondion4572. A timing belt/chain failure, although expensive, is likely to cost ~£4k to repair the engine. It's a big job believe me, I have helped my Dad do just this job on a family member's car. However, a seemingly straightforward thing like an electrical machine (motor) bearing failure on an EV cannot be done at a main dealer workshop. There are no procedures or tools (like shims to hold the rotor in place) available to do the job and no exchange parts system set up (like we used to have in days gone past for alternators and starter motors) so the whole motor would go to scrap and a new one would be required at a cost of £10k + in addition to reprograming all the callibration settings from the new electrical machine into the inverter. A colleague was quoted in excess of £10k for this work on his 5 or 6 year old i3 when his main bearings started to whine.

@@ModernHeroes just a thought, whilst thinking about the LEAF and its higher scrap rates. Yes, the 2011/2012 batteries weren’t good, and the lack of cooling was never going to help, but what else was different? 🤔 Like the Prius from 2004-2008, wasn’t the LEAF popular as taxis? I recall newspaper articles with them. Then they’d be rapid charging them… a lot, on an uncooled pack. 😖 Cleevely did a few battery vids of the LEAF taxis they repaired. 🤔 10 years on, everyone learned from Nissan’s mistake 😜

Based on present battery chemistry - of which newer chemistries are developing all the time - current estimates for the longevity of lithium ion batteries is around 200,000 miles in an EV. Considering the average mileage of a passenger vehicle when it goes to be scrapped is between 70,000 to 157,000 miles, depending on in which country it is being driven, then even current battery chemistry is more than adequate for the majority of car owners. However, once the power delivery of the battery is no longer sufficient for use in the car itself, then the battery pack’s cells have a ‘second life’ in home, business and, in particular, Grid battery storage systems, which is becoming a booming business. So, EV battery packs are valuable commodities and the chances that any of them will just “end up in landfill”, as the anti-EV media would have you believe, or even need recycling is extremely remote.

Odd comment not backed up by reality. We have a VW ID.3 which is 3 years and 4 months old. The battery still has 4 years and 9 months warranty although a recent check shows the battery to be almost 100% of original capacity when new. There are now two garages in my home town who will service and repair EV's plus there is Cleevely Mobile EV servicing. There is also a network of hundreds of independents under the HEVRA association who will service and repair EV's. Given that an EV needs little servicing the very fact that 1 million out of nearly 40 million vehicles on the road have plenty of places who will help on the rare occasion that it becomes necessary is frankly excellent. And of course main agents can service and repair cars from their manufacturers although who would waste excessive cash at the main agent? I decided to replace the tyres on our car because I wanted some Michelin Cross Climate 2's to cope with varying road and weather conditions over the winter. I had them fitted at a local tyre fitter. I didn't need special EV versions and there is no issue of any kind with the tyres.

You are completely missing the point. The second hand EV market is completely broken and going to get worse. The 0% BIK meant leasing was a massive tax dodge. Now the ZEV mandate means main dealers are massively incentivised to sell new EV over 2nd hand. So they will not even touch a 2nd hand EV because they get £15k fine for not selling 20% new EVs.

The “best” they could do was charging a hundred pound to scrap it. I took the car off his hands for free and saved him £100. It was a brilliant car and served me well for four years. Ironic that the dealership was flogging my father-in-law a diesel while telling him at the same time they wouldn’t touch them because they couldn’t get rid of them ....

At some point you have to stop and ask: "Just what is it that EV's are supposed to be saving us from?" There is one question that is never addressed that would expose the "climate crisis" for the scam that it is, which is "What percentage of the atmosphere is CO2?" The answer, never given in plain language, is that CO2 is currently around 420 parts per million, (google it) increased, they tell us, from 280 ppm in 1850. That's a difference of 140 ppm, or in terms more readily understood by the layman, the composition of the atmosphere has changed by 0.014% (14 thousandths of 1%) in the last 170 years. LESS THAN 1 THOUSANDTH OF 1% PER DECADE! How much closer to "zero" do they think it's possible to get? How gullible do you have to be to believe that this rate of change is causing extreme weather events, which have always happened and always will? Their claim is that this tiny amount "traps heat". ALL gasses dissipate heat and even if CO2 is an exception, the suggestion that a total of 0.042% can overwhelm the capacity of the remaining 99.958% to dissipate that heat is abject nonsense. CO2 DOES NOT control the global temperature, there is no "climate crisis". Wind farms, solar panels, heat pumps, EV's.. None of these measures are necessary, nor will they have the slightest effect on the weather. Eye-watering sums of money have already been wasted on this futile exercise. Time to wake up, stop throwing our money at these boondoggles and squandering the world's resources on projects that cannot possibly succeed as there never was a problem to begin with. There is no need to save the planet from a minuscule increase in the gas on which all life depends, but it does need to be rescued from idiot politicians and media mouthpieces that push this garbage.

I don't know if my EV will save the enviroment, but it saves me a couple of hundreds of pounds every month, it costs me 2.5p per mile (I charge at home at 9p/Kwh) when my old diesel cost me almost 20p/mile. I paid for the service and MOT £65 this year when the last service on my diesel was £250 and I had to replace the turbo and the intercooler-radiator (over £1000 cost) and the rear brakes (calipers, discs and pads) that could cost £300 more. I scraped it.The previous year I replaced the front brakes and a part of suspension (I don't remember which one) and it cost me over £1000 with the service and MOT.

@@chrishar110 If it works for you and it was a free choice, congratulations, though I think you are in for a shock when you come to trade it in. An EV does not meet my needs or suit my situation, but what I object to is being coerced into buying one by the absurd notion that it will "save the planet". Like all the "solutions" to this imaginary crisis, windmills, solar panels etc. they are actually WORSE for the environment.
