Thanks for this Pastor Piper. I found out a couple of months ago that I was conceived through IVF. I was shocked and had a brief existential crisis. Interestingly, it was Christmas Eve when I found that out. Christmas is the time of unusual conceptions. I know that God chose me to belong to His Son before the foundation of the world and predestined my life to be His. He kept me safe and formed me in the womb even then.

I’m not going to lie here, I was beginning to question my own beliefs regarding the soul and it’s origin. However, your conclusion reassured me that God orchestrated IVF babies (more importantly, their souls) before the technology was ever even developed. God bless.
I think we've all been there. Where you're really totally not sure about a certain topic and it really starts grinding and gnawing at your faith. I'm very happy for you that you found your answer. I actually just went through something similar and God made me reaffirm my faith out loud to my dad and I answered myself essentially.

The practice of IVF has become very casual. It is indeed a commodity, and cannot be compared to the example of Hannah in the Bible. IVF has given rise or solutions to sodom lifestyle, single parenting, etc. Imagine women who abort babies at the click of a finger, but still undergo IVF. I know of such a case, where one child was born through IVF, at least two pregnancies that followed were aborted, one singleton, the other was a twin - both spontaneous conception. Knowing that woman she will do it again without much thought. A very deeply self centred and manipulative individual. And anyway, there are so many children waiting for a home/adoption.

It is horrifying to see that people are trying to play to role of God on another level. Man, is capable of a lot (we see that in science); however, there is only one God and he will not give his glory to another. People are still trying to become like God today, but their tower of Babel shall soon fall, so to speak, unless they repent.

Is a child a right or a gift?..are gifts given or demanded?..the "unsuccessful" embryos..do they have God's mark on them or not?..God's love ultimately is not indiscriminate..it is not to be trampled on because of human difficulties...

One’s identity is best understood “why” they where born rather than “how” we came into this world! God predestined our existence whether it was by way of being legitimate or illegitimate. Surly if God was not surprised if from eternity He had you and I in mind to exist. Not just us mind you, but also those who have been and will be miscarried or even aborted. What then is God’s justice in all this? First of all He is sovereign! Second, He is the essence of reality for all that exists as well that which doesn’t exist or never will exist! Lastly, He has provided a means to overcome and overthrow our broken state so that we can be as a measure of His grace to a world that is lost and lonely by way of being isolated through a broken identity.
The Biblical answer is a very clear no. The last time humans used their intelligence to meander too far into God's domain he took out his wrath upon us. Creating life with technology and our intelligence, whether through IVF or cloning or any other unnatural means is an abomination, and God will punish us for these transgressions against him.
I'm not sure this is exactly answering the question. Are children conceived through rape not knit together in their mother's wombs? Are they not capable of surrender to the Lord? I would answer that they are. Despite our sin, God is still the Author of life. I would argue that a child conceived in sin is still a life God created.

coincidentally, my best friend is also named Carly! and she recently found out she was IVF. I struggle with this concept as a Christian, but I love her so much and she wouldn’t be here without it.
I hope people also understand that IVF is not always successful and only cares a rate about 33% success. Meaning that if it’s not meant to be, it wouldn’t happen. I’ve met many women who were not able to carry despite many IVF and IUI treatments. I’m a young wife who’s suffered child loss and of course I’ve considered fertility help but after negating the risks associated with synthetic hormones just make me feel like it’s not good for my body . No. Conception starts immediately. A soul enters. IVF it multiples cells immediately. Souls don’t enter there in the glass, or wait for hours or days before entering
My son is an IVF baby. My husband and I only had two embryos and both embryos were put inside of me. He is the embryo that attached and made me pregnant. The whole process of IVF from beginning to end is a miracle and brought me closer to God. I never once doubted God's divinity and sovereignty as it relates to the birth of my son. In fact, I was given a front row seat to it. What the doctors could not do, could not predict, could not control, could not bring about, my Lord Jesus did (hallelujah). Many Christians negatively judge those who undertake reproductive assistance. For them I pray that they may never know the searing pain of infertility.
I get what you are saying, but I hope you do know many couples take out more eggs than they plan to use, and either freeze them forever or dispose of the ones that aren't" good quality" and even the act of getting the male sperm can be weird if they are obtaining it by showing lude material.
I am infertile and Christian and you’re lucky that you only had two embryos. If you had 20 what would happen to the embryos not used ? That’s where we have to be careful ..

All babies are knit together by the Lord. Who else would be knitting them together? We must be careful with IVF. I can see implanting all the embryos that are created but I do not think it is right to create a certain number and implant less-it leads to eugenics and also frozen babies.
While all of you are spot on for conception outside of marriage, have you considered that invitro can be necessary for an infertile married couple, using only the sperm and egg from the couple?

You probably want to read the story of Joseph in the Old Testament.. Joseph said to his brothers what you meant for evil, God meant for good. But the idea is the same, God uses evil to do good.
