honestly, some of the most impactful, memorable works have been via The New Yorker docs. I got 11 minutes through and had to stop because I wanted to think about it more. That good. Thank you, team!

I really feel you. And it makes me a bit sad seeing the view count, as of now only 11,000 people. This story and video deserve so much more than that!

Something interesting about the puzzle at 24:00 is that the large section in the middle looks like the Japanese character 正, meaning "correct." I think that's a really neat detail that I'm pretty sure most people won't be able to appreciate and really adds to the idea that there's a lot more creativity that goes into making one of these kinds of puzzles that machines can't easily replicate.

You know some Japanese but your English comp skills are not so good. Figure out if your post is about yourself, or the subject at hand, presently it is confused on that point. PS it would be relatively easy to include a bias for ideogramatic shapes into a program by storing the shapes and comparing volumes of output. It's not a bad idea in fact that a wide variety of shapes be engineered into computer generated KenKen.

@@johnsmith1474 It's said you shouldn't use the first person to present opinions as it lessens the authority. However, I choose to anyway because I would hate for any of the opinions I write to be misconstrued as fact. You can choose to read what I said any way you like, but I will tell you that it is not about stroking my own ego or anything like that. Instead, it is meant as a criticism of the editing, as I don't understand why they would include something like that if it will be lost on the majority of their audience. In response to your other idea, of course that would be possible and in fact easy to do, but the main point is that it would not be easy for a computer to have the idea to, for example, start putting interesting shapes in the puzzles in the first place. The impetus, at least for now, will remain human creativity.

Dear New Yorker, thank you so much for featuring all these high quality docs! And by quality, I don't mean just the production value, but the provocative, stimulating, insightful and almost auteur-like qualities that make us ponder over many issues. And all this is done without inane graphics, music or sensationalization.

Kenken is addictive. Sudoku is addictive. If you tried Killer Sudoku or Diabolical Sudoku that is addictive. And Kenken is addictive, neat, puzzles with Arithmetic put in them. It increases the Logic as well as the Arithmetic capabilities of a student. Take one puzzle of Kenken and you won't stop at it. Thank you Tetsuya Miyamoto for giving us these puzzles. Then some more and then some more. Kenken is the evolution of Sudoku. This is a good documentary.

After experiencing more hand crafted puzzles through Cracking The Cryptic, I believe that hand crafted puzzles are far more interesting. The creator has laid out a clear path with ideas they want to convey to the solver to lead them on their journey. It is a clear game of cat and mouse or student and teacher. Generated puzzles are solvable and have a unique solution but they lack this depth and intimacy.

Miyamoto is wrong when he says that when a picture is beautiful, it cannot be explained. A short essay using the vocabulary of visual analysis, properly concocted by a person of sufficient insight, not only explains a beautiful picture but is itself a beautiful creation.

An objector might respond and say that the debate rests on the degree and requirements of "beauty."

Miyamoto wants to put a "nervous air" into his students and thinks all learning requires that stress. Ironically the takeover by computer means of his KenKen universe is no doubt causing him a ton of stress. Touche' smartass!
