Are NBA Uniforms Getting Worse? 

I feel like Nike is just trying a lot of things, forgeting about the essence of the team. They should go back to just three uniforms and try to be experimental in just one.

Nike was the outfitter for Chicago, La Lakers, Toronto, Washington, Portland, Miami, Dallas, and Detroit in the 90’s. Nike did design the teal Pistons’ unis

I feel like they need to redesign every 2-3 off seasons, not EVERY offseason Let the designers sit with the idea and then drop it at a opportune time

I'm surprised Nike is still allowed to make apparel for the NBA. Their jerseys and shoes have ripped on the court!! But the quality issue is overshadowed by the daunting love and fanboying over this brand as a whole. The way they have "re-branded" or worked with teams to re-brand have been huge misses. WHY ARE THE LAKERS JERSEY'S YELLOW AND NOT GOLD?? WHY WERE THE UTAH JAZZ WEARING SUNS-LIKE COLORS?? WHY ARE THEY UTAH JAZZ NOW IN BLACK AND YELLOW JERSEYS?? WHY ARE THE NETS THE SAME AS THE SPURS?? There is not desire to create jerseys atleast with a proper brand or justification for changing team colors. I hope the contract ends soon and they can move onto a different sports brand to create the outfits of the league.

90s jerseys were the best style and for brand recognition, but some of the new minimalist jerseys look really clean and good. The big problem for me is that teams I do not follow closely, I can not even tell who is playing sometimes for minutes because the jerseys do such a poor job of identifying the teams.....

I was thinking the recent minimalist design was due to cost or it could be the nba taking the soccer approach of having different uni every year to make more money

Just keep the jerseys simple. One home, one away and one alternate where you do the absolute maximum in creativity

Also Nike should design the Home and away kits, for the 3rd jersey let fans design that one. Open it up let season ticket holders rank the options and viola they get court side seats, financial compensation and an autographed jersey by the player of their choice.

The problem is that teams change jersey styles for change sake. Keep the same damn jerseys!!

I agree with the home/road and occasional alternate uniform. It is pretty dumb especially when there are so many Jersey changes now.

i dud some front end design in college so i can say.. minimalistic design is not a bad choice. until they do it frequently as an excuse for lack of an idea

The only thing stands to me the most is the durability of the jerseys. I watched the malice of the palace incident and Artest jersey went to saggy only after being pulled numerous times vs now luca easily ripping his jersey bare hand.

I was just thinking this as well. We gotta have more experimental jerseys and be more bold with them.

I think there are certain looks that are just classic and shouldn't be touched: Second three-peat era Bulls Shaq and Penny era Magic Barkley era Suns Bird era Celtics Mutombo era Hawks Sometimes, teams affect positive change. The most recent Rockets jerseys were miles better than what they were doing in late in Yao Ming's era (still not as good as the 80s or even the cartoon rocket), but all too often they make changes that are because some marketing person wanted to make their own mark. Look at the Clippers' atrocities, for example. Their longstanding jerseys from the 90s and 00s weren't anything special, but they've progressively gotten worse since their Buffalo Braves days... and the jerseys introduced late in the Lob City era were one of the worst jerseys in NBA history. Also, the new Warriors jerseys look just like the Cal jerseys... only Cal (the local college team) does it better.

I’m not even an NBA fan, but I’ve noticed the changes in the last few years and I hate it. I rarely ever see teams wearing their traditional uniforms that the average person will know. For example, it seems to me like I never see the Lakers wearing their classic Yellow uniforms.

I remember when the Minnesota and Phoenix jerseys were unveiled(the main ones they wear). I thought they were the cheapest looking uniforms I've seen in awhile. It just looked like duct tape was used for the names and numbers. That's when I first started noticing the trend. Now the jazz and Cavs are getting the same treatment.

I loved the okc city edition jersey’s but I do see how it could be jarring to turn on the tv and not even know what team your watching.

Every day I wish the raptors would just rock that vintage purple design. All this black and gold is ok I guess but when I think of the Raptors, I think of Vince Carter in that purple jersey!

tbh I like these jerseys. we rarely have minamalist nba uniforms outside the g league and summer league so I get why people dislike them. but the push for unconvential jersey design is refreshing, I’m tired of seeing the bulls and lakers in the same exact uniform every year.

Back in the day the home team always had light colors on and the away team had dark colors on. That scheme going away has really muddied things up and is one of the things that really bothers me.

The Nike jerseys shown at 4:14 only have 6 "unique" jerseys while every other one is a name with the number centered. Why would you have all of them with a white background? Why is Golden State the ONLY ONE that has their logo and not their name in the front!? Why is the Blazers jersey the ONLY ONE with the number off centered!? It's horrible.

Ton of Nike jerseys look awful yes and it’s truly been since they got the contract, literally their first year as exclusive provider they made the big steps their jerseys are known for and dramatically increased the number of variations, ruining the Jersey ecosystem for a pretty transparent revenue-increasing strategy

I hate that many teams have uniforms that look exactly like the uniforms of other teams...one of the dumbest things ever when I think about it.

I think the minimal ones are the classy ones, that teal detroit one is horrendous Its about balance I think.

Sponsorships driving the "need" for new jerseys every year, vs sticking with jerseys for a few seasons is the new issue

2 jerseys is good, 3 jerseys is optimal, 4 jerseys is pushing it, 5 jerseys is way to many. Also that constant changing of the jerseys is not good for the jerseys in question

I'd like it if all past and new designs were available and the players could decide what they wanna use and when. I'm sure money is all that really matters to Nike though. If jersey sales in certain designs go down we'll see different ones.

Nobody need Earned and City edition jersey while there are already 3 fits to bought. Keep it at 3 and Xmas special, that's it. Can't believe i said it, but i kinda miss Adidas made.

Nike should simplify and go back to a Home/Away set with most home being white/light colors and away being dark or colorful. Then have a 3rd jersey be one of a city edition, classic edition or earned/statement/whatever special edition. And less mono color uniforms. Bring back patterns and details on these uniforms.

I think this is a bad take. As a newer NBA fan (past 4 years) I think the many jerseys per team is a great idea and keeps things refreshing. It’s one of my fav things about then nba is the uniqueness of it all. Unlike the boring nhl. I used to be a big fan but the league is so reluctant to change.

I think it is not that Nike should take the blame, it is the approval of the teams. We know that Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers are rebranding and those jerseys are approved by the front office. And got a report that they want to revoke the designs but they can't due to the contract they have signed.

Nike hit their peak with Miami Vice and The Valley, but everything else has been lackluster to say the least. Pretty much every day I think about how I could come up with at least one sick jersey for an NBA team. How difficult can it possibly be to drop some bangers?

I really love what they are doing with the classic jerseys. I hope Chicago brings back the pinstripe jerseys. Those classic Detroit position jerseys are amazing.

I think they should go back to just having three jerseys. The only way a team has four is if they have a throwback.

Missing the Adidas uniforms - Nike already flopped with their short sleeve stint and their new material that was so thin that they were constantly being torn during games. They can't keep getting away with this just because they're Nike.

You have to understand that Nike just want to squeeze every penny from you. They know everyone has different taste so having a lot of options for your favorite team is good for the responsible consumer. But if you are not responsible, then Nike is winning against you.

Make them more animated again

Make it maximum 4 jerseys a year (1 Road, 1 Home, 1 Alternate, 1 Iconic Retro) The Road & Home jerseys shouldn't change much or at all year to year whilst the alternate is the most creative one and the iconic one is just something they used to use coming back. As long as they dont bring back sleeved jerseys it'll be fine.

I agree, the uniforms are crap these days. The only ones I liked were the Fushia Sunset Miami Heat jerseys and the Sunset jerseys from the Jazz. they POP. These other jerseys don't pop. To be fair, I am biased as a child of the 90's, those jerseys were great for the most part because they are iconic & noticeable (think dinosaur Raptors), NOT formal and smooth looking (think Brooklyn Nets black & white). I don't get what Nike is doing these days. The only good thing they're doing is bringing back the retro jerseys. That 90's Suns jersey is so awesome!! The teal pistons jersey is ugly, but it's memorable! People know what team you support. I rock my Vancouver Grizzlies teal hat from time to time and it's a conversation starter in public! That's what it's about! I also agree about reducing the amount of jerseys a team wears in a season. I like the idea in the 2000's of one home, one road, one alternate for the year. And jersey designs can only be changed once every 5 years. This will allow for brand recognition and loyalty and irreconcilability.

I think 4 is fine as long as the 4th one is a retro throwback of the classics. a home jersey(white with the logo and coloured outlining of the team's colours), an away jersey(coloured jersey again with the logo, it should shout out to anyone watching that this is this team's jersey), and lastly an alternate jersey which like you said they can experiment with it. I don't really see the point of a 5th jersey but Home, Away, Classic & Alternate is enough imo

I think the Nike nba problem is I think it focuses on only one demographic when it needs to look at each individual market and treat them as such once the learn the dos and donts of every fan base they hopefully will get better

During the 90s a lot of people thought the big logos and colours were ugly But the kids loved them and it gave brand Recognition to teams But now everything is the same practically from how teams play to jerseys We as fans need variety or everything just starts being seen as plain I don’t mind minimalist jerseys But they all can’t look the same Some of them look like practice jerseys Give us some with colour Keep bringing back the retro jerseys Make OKC play a couple of games in Supersonic colours and jerseys Hell the NBA Should make the OKC play a couple of games in Seattle with the jerseys and the same floor design It would be cool if the NBA did retro nights/games where both teams play in there 90s jerseys with the 90s floor designs I think that would be more then enough And somebody stated earlier Or let teams choose the brand they wanna work with just like in the 90s Then you get competition to create amazing jerseys

I disagree with that whole 2 to 3 uniform thing. Nobody complained when LeBron heat had a new jersey almost every month. There's nothing wrong with 2019 to 2022 jerseys. With the new ones they just lack creativity.

NBA uniforms are complete garbage now. Few teams have any logos on their uniforms, just text. The 90's were the golden era of NBA uniforms. My favorites ones from that era where the ones worn by Utah, Atlanta, Orlando, Phoenix,Minnesota, Toronto, Vancouver, Houston, Philadelphia and San Antonio. Only San Antonio hasn't changed their uniforms.

only 5 choices for Lakers jersey are acceptable, and please no variations: 1. the gold HOME jersey with violet stripe.. not the banana yellow one 2. the purple AWAY jersey with gold stripe.. not the Sacramento violet one 3. the white SUNDAY jersey with gold and purple stripe.. not the lazy white one with blue letters 4. the BLACK MAMBA jersey, the only black Laker uniform acceptable 5. the light blue MPLS jersey im not saying use all 5 of them per year.. just use the black one every January and during playoffs, and just use the Minneapolis one for special ocassions
