And I wish more people would understand that. Many people think that it’s the way they’re raised but I have seen pits turn on their owners even after years with no incident.

Some of my friends have pits and they’re the sweetest dogs. But they also aren’t the owners who perpetually preach about how much they get a bad rap.

​@m42037 Pitbulls are one of the most misidentified breeds out there. There are mutts that look just like bully breeds. Like a Lab Chow mix that attacked a kid. People thought it was a pit and they were all wrong. So the "most attacks" could have been any type of dog with a muscular build and claimed to be a pitbull. Don't believe all those stats where people just assumed a type of dog did it because of a stupid ass bias against a breed.

Neither do I. Nor do I respect people who own or defend them.

I saw one several years ago, standing on my neighbor’s driveway when he came home from work, as was their daily routine. The 4 year old daughter got out of the truck right behind her Daddy and she went to greet the pit just like she had done hundreds of times - the pit lunged at the little girl and bit her throat clean off of her - windpipe, esophagus and carotid arteries all hanging out of the dogs mouth. The girl’s blood was spraying everywhere for about 10 seconds - and just like that, the little girl was dead. It was the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen. It’s not about the owners - irresponsible owners make it worse, but pitties are downright dangerous.

What would you have said?

If you believe what you are saying, you are deluding yourself. PBs have a genetic neurological loose screw. Many attacks by PBs were from dogs raised by loving and highly responsible owners, often for years, until one day out of the blue they snapped and turned deadly. I've seen it myself. If we were to believe you, then deadly attacks by Golden Retrievers, Brittany Spaniels, and German Wirehaired pointers would often make the news. At least the people who own Rottweilers usually will admit that they own a potentially dangerous dog, no matter how well behaved it is.

Yet no one has a problem saying Golden Retrievers and Labs are friendly. Or that Huskies are stubborn and independent. The job a dog was bred for has a *massive* impact on temperament. German Shepherds were bred to protect. So they are naturally protective and somewhat aggressive if not handled by an experienced dog owner. The job pit bulls were bred specifically to do is fight, primarily other dogs. They cannot help but, for the most part, be highly aggressive and unpredictable unless handled by a professional level dog owner. It’s not their fault, it’s what they were specifically bred to do. They will not stop slaughtering innocent people and animals until we can acknowledge that as a society

@@Callidus7SSM Agreed, they were/are also used as catch dogs for large livestock, now including hunting wild pigs, because of their "gameness", meaning once started, they rarely quit. All anyone needs to see is the multiple YT videos of PB's attacking horses who are minding their own business.

@@californiadreamer2580I noticed that too. I've owned several pit bulls and they were great friendly dogs but this breed needs a lot of discipline. They get fixated and can't stop. The first thing I taught my pit bulls was release and attack commands. So they understand do not attack anything unless commanded and if that doesn't work release command. They are great dogs just not family lapdog pets. Some people forget animals are not accessories and have their own desires/purpose.
