Overpriced, with inflated/faked historical importance. Let alone the scandals and producing 30m resistance watches 😂. A moonwatch is better than this crap.
I had wanted a Panerai for a long time and finally picked up the 1312 a few months ago. One of the best things about this brand is the recognizability you mentioned, the community, and the versatility. The strap change system is great, I love not having to use a spring bar tool, and being able to change straps easily and often without the fear of scratching the case. I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, I went to the store looking for a 42mm model, and found the 44mm 1312 wore smaller than the dimensions. Last week I purchased the 47mm 1389 Submersible, and although at the top end of what I could get away with on my wrist, I am really impressed at the quality of this watch. Great video on it, I am starting to see more content out there about the brand, and I am hoping they make a big comeback.
From all my watches including Rolex and Omega, I find myself always going back to my Panerai very often , every brand has their ups and downs , so weather some people love them and others don’t , as long as having one makes you happy , so who cares what others think . 😀😀
I agree with you, but usually the person saying "who cares what others think" or "I dont care what other ppl think about me". Those guys antidotally care the most. I care what people think, but at the end of the day its my wrist its on and if you have haters you're prolly doing something right.
Although I love panerai watches a lot of the older models with the manual wind are faked and really good fakes too that are hard to tell from real ones for that reason I stay away from certain models also feel the carbon fiber models should be a lot less money and the ones to get in my humble opinion are the titanium chronograph with the zenith movements and newer in-house automatics in steel with a clear back .
Solid video Teddy. I have to disagree with you about your point on wearability. The Radiomir is a far more wearable watch than the Luminor. When equipped with the iconic wire lugs, they almost vanish and the watch wears similar to it's case width, excluding the crown obviously. Many people who are afraid of sizing seem to forget this fact. For example, the 45mm PAM 380 is a classic and elegant sausage dial watch. It measures 51mm lug to lug which on my 7.5 inch wrist fits well. In fact due to the nature of the lugs, it can easily double as a dress watch. That along with the 13mm case thickness and well, I think that is a wonderful entry Panerai for the hesitant buyer. However, overall, I do agree that these watches are very controversial and most certainly suit a bigger wrist. I am happy to have "the wrist" as I truly do love the watches made by Panerai. I also agree with your comment regarding the overwhelming reissues and similar models. To me, Panerai excels when they innovate with new materials, dial variations and when keep it simple (2 hand/3 hand). The high complication pieces are the ones that seem to be forgettable to me. Overall, I think they deserve respect for making a truly iconic case and dial layout. Most other watch brands simply imitate eachother and I find them to be quite lackluster. Cartier is another iconic brand that comes to mind and they offer delightful products if you are willing to climb up the horological/financial ladder. This hobby is about art. I am steadfast about this opinion. Many of us can go on about movement complexities and horological significance, but at the end of the day, that's all hogwash. We are energy. We are emotions wrapped in a skin suit. When we look at a watch, we visualize the watch. This makes me agree with your points about Panerai having many things going for them. Excited to see what the brand does in the present. Maybe you should become the CEO. I like your fan involvement ideas. Cheers.
I love the brand and own a PAM795. I love the fact that it’s completely different from any other watch in my collection. I’m just not a huge fan of most new releases. I always associated Panerai with a certain vintage vibe and these days they’re sailing a different course.
I brought a Luminor Due with gray sunray dial and the watch is absolutely amazing looking! It's not the most precise or the most resistant watch but it is charming and a the slim case makes it super wearable. I can only recommend Panerai :)
Great history lesson on a fantastic watch. I was lucky enough to grab a Panerai 352 a few years back, and its in my top 3 watches in my collection. I love this watch with its unusual case shape, crown guard, sandwich dial, and gold hour and minute hands, ease of band changing.
I used to hate panerai, i think they are over priced & overated. Using a basic movement but charging an exorbitant price.....until I tried on hand a Radiomir Pam 380, fell in love at first try. When around looking for one but ended up getting a Pam 183 because i like the sandwich dial more. Now it gets a lot of wear in my rotation, never regret buying it. Maybe getting a used Pam 422 next. Btw great video Teddy, never dissapoint 👏👍
I have two Panerai and I love them. The first one is the iconic manual 8 days Luminor Marina sandwich dial. I feel extremely lucky to have one that I feel represents Panerai like no other. And I agree with you. I feel Panerai is limiting itself and paneristi with limited edition watches. They should have one Luminor, one sumersible and one radiomir that will always be available. I think everyone deserves an iconic Panerai.
A very underrated brand in my opinion, i had a look at a few pieces today and yes they do not look much, but once you have one on your wrist they are very impressive
I’d consider myself a Rolex fan boy, and own seven of them, but I do own a PAM111 and absolutely love it. I love it for the simple reason you mentioned, it has a very distinctive look and easy recognizable. Believe it or not, I get more compliments on my PAM111 than I do any other watch in my collection.
Great vid. I love my PAM723 (44mm and rare w/bracelet). Really like what the brand is doing right now, adapting and adjusting the designs by reducing dimensions and making new models more wearable (38-42mm), for more people. Medium sized watches are on-trend right. Panerai cushion cases are gorgeous designs and the crown guard on the Luminors are unique & cool to the brand. Plus no other brand wears different straps better than PAMs. The one thing I’m not thrilled to see is the VERY low 30 meters water resistance on the new 38mm Due’s. Not a good decision to not at least make 100m and far off the brands legacy and heritage.
30m is what fake Chinese watches from Alibaba offer. What an absolute joke. The lever crown had a very specific function and made for the the excellent watertight performance. The history of Panerai is certainly not about high horology and polished movements and whatnot. And for military-descended watches to not have a seconds-hacking feature is downright criminal
I've tried on quite a few Panerai and I've been close to buying one. Unfortunately I just don't think they are worth the money. Its difficult to chose a Panerai watch over say an Omega Seamaster. It just doesn't make sense to pay more for a Panerai than an Omega or even some Tudors. The only other issue I have is that I fear it would be difficult to sell if I ever wanted too in the future. The market for watches sized 44mm on average and above is small. Plus, although I enjoy the design, some people prefer a more standard watch design. If Panerai could lower prices by 30-40% at retail and made more watches in the 42mm size with a thinner profile, I think they'd kill it.
Seamasters, while technically a superior watch, looks very much like something an uncle with a beer belly and boring attire would wear. Panerai for me all day.
They split the watch community right down the middle eh? So I guess I'm in the half that thinks some are really cool, some are ok but not for me and some are just downright obominations.
Panerai? 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 You might as well use the money this company asks for their watches (with "in-house" movements 🤪) as toilet paper ... and even the company cannot distinguish their ach so expensive products from fakes.
Nicely done Teddy. I am a Panerai collector, having six of them spread across the model range. I also own Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Breitling pieces. Panerai have just released 40mm Luminor pieces and will be phasing out the 42mm. They will then offer 47mm, 44mm, 40mm and 38mm models which can offer something for every wrist size or preference. One of the more fun aspects to Panerai collecting , that you did not mention, is the variety of watch bands and their easy interchangeability. Panerai has introduced an “Easy change system” of sorts to most of their models making switching up the look of your watch very simple. Being able to change the look of your watch in numerous ways makes it much more wearable.
The "Easy change system" many brands are adopting this method such as Nomos or even Cartier which you can swap without needing a tool. It's great to know Panerai is going the same route!
Got two, a 312 and a 243, and absolutely love them over my Sub or Navitimer. They are my weekend watches, and can't wait to choose wich strap I will wear next day.
I have four Panerai and love them (55, 112, 1024, & 372),. I have a lot of different brands, and some may be better "watches", but Panerai has a charm and a warmth that others don't. I prefer older, simpler models to the more modern designs. Also, let's not forget the joy of strap collecting!
As a self proclaimed waterman, the reason I’m planning on buying a Panerai submersible is based on its history. It would represent my appreciation and time spent in the ocean. Great job and thank you for the review!
Pam gets hate for no reason. Solid watches, something for everyone in every size and color and configuration. You have idiots paying over 100k for mass produced stainless steel 3 hand watches from other brands yet they come here at nit pick at insignificant things
@@boxingmotoman like someone stated, Rolex replicas are virtually 1:1 these days and you can find super replicas for almost any brand. If being easy to counterfeit were a main reason, some of these 3 hander stainless steel watches won't be that popular, buy a grand complication or ones with a unique complication that is difficult to fake.
"Pam gets hate for no reason." -- Pam gets hate for Due. It was probably the dumbest move Panerai could ever make. Panerai with 3 bars water resistance?
Panerai is not top of watch horology and they have fucked up hard here and there but hell yeah they are panerai and not some fucking hublob :) Have to sell some watches and get pam111 someday.. I like more submersible hands but i don't like date window. After years of watches I noticed I like dials whit no date very much.. Second hand is a must other vice I am constantly thinking is watch working or not.. I am just flawed little human whit own issues..
Absolutely love my PAM1392. It's like the 1312 but 42mm and slightly thinner so slides under cuffs but retains its character. No 9 so looks better balanced to me, and has a crystal caseback. OK, it's only 100m water resistant, but since I can't swim, if I'm at that depth I have other things to worry about.
They need to bring back the thick sapphire crystals and inverted cyclops date magnifier. The thick domed sapphire crystal gives my 2003 Pam 00048 a warmth and charm. I keep looking at the newer collections and they are not fun or interesting. 41mm Radiomir with a domed sapphire crystal. The new 40mm Luminor looks like it was designed by a committee, and it stinks. Put a domed sapph crystal on with an inverted cyclops date magnifier, and you would have a hit. I understand WHAT they are trying to do, but the designs look so uninteresting, that they need to embrace some of the aesthetics that got them love from 1996-2009. All you have to do is reduce the size. Three models. Luminor, Radiomir, Submersible. 3 sizes a piece. 41mm & 43mm, and 45mm (only in bespoke offerings). Design ebs and flows, but they need to let those 45mm and 47mm die off and become neo-vintage. Let some of the older models become chic neo-vintage and build a fondness for the brand and that era. But these current designs, with thin flat sapphire crystals and obnoxiously pretentious travel the globe nonsense/save-a-cause-with-a-purchase model has to stop. It's neat, but not reality. Make a stainless that can survive insane levels of chlorine and a 3.5" drop without breaking a pallet fork. They have two icons, but they lack any conviction in the design ethos now.
@@ReasonableExpectations Congrats on the purchase! I had wanted Panerai since 1997 when I was 15. I saw it on the Style network and thought it was absolutely beautiful. I've had mine since May of 2019. I'd recommend at some point just sending it in for a factory service, I had mine done, due to an accident involving my son, and it falling literally 3.5" and chipping a pallet fork. Now it runs beautifully. Any sales person that says "they run fast or slow by 5-9 seconds a day" is letting you know, it's not had a real service in a very long while. Enjoy the new piece! Make many new memories!
@@ReasonableExpectations Life is to be enjoyed to the fullest! I can't wait to pass this watch to my son, (if he wants it). It's gonna have a wonderful time this holiday season on your wrist! Be well.
I’m a Panerai wearer. I would never claim the brand is perfect, and would tend to say their watches are a tad overpriced. But especially career dependent, it is a watch choice that really works. I work in the world of firearms and that community loves Panerai. My submersible has held up well. Doesn’t keep perfect time, but I dig it
Absolutely love my 914! I think it is a modern watch with all the Panerai DNA. I can wear it on the beach and with a shirt at night. Super versatile and it completely changes when you swap the strap. Love it! Great video as always!
They are too big for me EXCEPT that i understand they have a smaller "ladies" Luminor Due 38mm. As someone comfortable with his sexuality, I would be interested in seeing that one despite how the marketers try to position the watch in the marketplace. Good vid. Keep at it!
Am new to Panerai, and your point about them having too many models with only slight differences is TRUE! I got confused looking at their website. Even worse is that now some models have the sandwich dial and others do not, and I cannot tell clearly from photos, and their description does not specify.
Agree, a good video. I bought my Panerai because of the distinctive design AND because they have the most comfortable leather strap I have ever worn. And, they offer an 8 year warranty!
The Radiomir and Luminor collections have it's own design language which gives it, its own personality. With it's rugged and bold look, you can spot a Panerai from a mile away.
About two decades ago Panerai and Ferrari collaborated on a series of Ferrari watches. I think Panerai watches are very distinctive Italian just as Ferrari. The brands seemed to be a great match. I tracked down and found a new in the box version recently and I absolutely love this distinctive watch. While it is a shame these two highly regarded Italian brands disbanded their collaboration, the uniqueness and rarity of these particular watches seem very appealing to me!
Panerai and Ferrari are both great brand, but they share nothing in common; it doesn’t mix well. Panerai is more like destructive weapon; a submarine torpedo or a huge tank that shoot missiles , not slim racing machine.
You have excellent taste. A person should go with what they like. That is the very essence of being an individual. Not some spineless suck ass. Bravo to you!
@@hardenjeremy846 I agree the heritage is not in direct alignment. I actually contemplated that before deciding to purchase the watch. However, I think the Italian connection is much better between the two brands when compared to Ferrari's last watch partnership with the likes of Hublot which I think was an unmitigated disaster.
@@michaelkalb2896 yes Panerai and Ferrari are both Italian breed brand; that’s all they have in common. It’s like one putting an Italian tank beside Italian formula one racing machine, and try to sell that image… it’s disastrous for both. Now Ferrari going with RM. I think RM has image wanting to be sporty and fast moving; similar with Ferrari; the only challenge is Ferrari is only good in Red, whilst RM is best in black and white.
I always wanted a Panerai until I actually saw and held the range that's available in a local AD in Istanbul, now I don't. Nothing wrong with the watches at all, they just were not an attractive design for me.
I looked at PAM worn by someone, I don’t like it. I look at RU-vid reviews, mostly negative, too much imitation , bad resale. I came into the boutique tried and feel watch oversized and too big. I bought it because the straps are interesting; I put in crazy straps, and my boss wife noted and said to me “is that a Panerai?” and I got promotion.
@teddybaldessare It's almost as if PANERAI should split the brand as the Classic tool watches to remain as 'OFFICINE PANERAI' (actual ROLEX movements at Patek/Vacheron price point?) and then have all of the 'consumer' pieces under the PANERAI DUE brand. They are diluting the story and overall mystique we have come to know and love. I own an A Series PAM001 from the 90's, but I doubt I'd ever buy a new piece. OP no longer knows what it wants to be, and with the 'in-house' movement controversies of late, I am worried for the longevity of the brand.
I acquired my first Panerai last year after lusting over them for years. It is coincidentally the P 1312 and it’s very quickly became one of my favorite watches. Besides for the aesthetics the timekeeping is flawless which is something that means a lot to me when I’m paying a lot of money for a watch. I’m happy to have found your channel here on RU-vid and I have subscribed and look forward to hearing more about Panerai and other high end watches that you may be expert in. I had it on my wrist the last time I went to see my primary physician and she must’ve been looking at it while taking my blood pressure because she remembered to ask me what my watch was but forgot to record my blood pressure..
I love my Pam 320 Luminor Marina GMT 1950. As someone said below, I wouldn't want it as an only watch, but great for a certain mood as part of a rotation with my other very different watches.
Lots of people buy luxury watches as investment. But majority of people buy Panerai because they love it. So in a way Panerai has a fan club loyalists that other brands don’t. Plus i stop at a coffee shop every morning that is near a big office building and look at all the employees there waiting for coffee, i can say that i stand proud when all of them are wearing Rolex and my watch stands out just because its a Panerai. Rolex in a way hyped their own watches so much that now i see it more than i ever saw Casios on wrists it became very common.
As an Engineer, w a degree in Subsea Engineering, an ex-Submariner working offshore on deep water oil exploration…. I reckon I need to get a Pan, Radimor for me! Great vid!
Thank you for doing a segment on Panerai. I really love their submersible series. Their watches are unique and very much to my taste. I also really like big watches on my 7.1 inch wrist. However, I found your video lacking in several respects. Panerai has several serious problems. First, the Brooklyn Bridge scandal. Second, their so called in house movements. Third, the fact that Panerai has “never” apologized for these and many more issues. Fourth, their Q&A is horrendous. Finally, for what you get, Panerai is severely over priced for what you get. There’s no reason to assume Panerai won’t continue these bad practices in the future. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a Panerai without having the AD open the case for inspection and looking at the entire watch with a magnifier. Style and image is not everything…quality is everything!
Panerai should stay with the basic models and improve their quality such as water resistance throughout their models, using in house movements. Moreover, their should stop their limited editions. From the business site, they should stay as a small or medium company without the aspiration to grow.. Many of my collector friends own only one Panerai, which is often considered as enough presence in their collection. Interesting thing is that are currently many good vintage Pre-Vendome Panerei deals out there below 10k.
Great video. I’ve been a Panerai fan for over five years now and am fortunate enough to have wrists approaching those of a Neanderthal to enjoy their full lineup. While smaller diameters may be in style now, I can’t imagine ever getting rid of my 127. It has that clean, unquestionably Panerai look (and an easily serviced movement)!
Great video. I agree with all your points. The big issue for me is size. I have a 7.25 inch wrist but I still won't own a watch over 42mm. They just look cartoonish after that, IMO. So, most models are off the table. I love the design aesthetic of the brand, though so I got a PAM574...Perfect size for me and an absolute strap monster. The only model I would own.
The Italian frogmen worn this watch while blowing up and sank a British battleship and many others. That is a second kinda cool for me knowing this piece had stood the test of time in both peace and war, undergoing remarkable circumstances.
Thank You for addressing my favorite brand today. Panerai has always produced a quality timepiece. your right, there are many to choose from but my 1351 is a favorite with the brushed titanium case tobacco brown sandwich dial and the blue second hand. I was excited to see the video and I stopped all I was doing to watch it completely without interruption. Always great content, even when has nothing to do with what i like, I still watch, just to learn.
Great video. Have the 1312 and love it. A very wearable 44mm and such a tank. Robust movement (whether truly in house or not), unique style, and a strap monster.
I’ve been a fan and owner since 2001. The unique case design is also the source of the negativity towards the brand. I mean how many variations of the same design can the brand keep putting out there? Regardless, I love them and I always will. Great review Teddy.
Teddy - your love for watches is optimistic and cute - but leaves you missing key information. Panerai has screwed customers on many fronts. Deletion of the Hacking Seconds is a horrible bait and switch to customers. It's an abuse and a lie and this type of behaviour is disgusting from any manufacturer. No, I would never buy a new panerai. Would I buy a used one with an ETA, if it's priced the way any ETA should be? Maybe... they look 'nice'. Their military history wasn't one of acclaim, it was one of failure and rejection. These aren't dirty dozen field watches, breguet flyback chronos, or rolex explorer to everest, or omega speedmaster to the moon... so let's call a spade a spade and tone down the 'optimism' a bit.
While visiting a Panerai Boutique I somehow became convinced that a 42mm GMT was the watch for me. I bought it and wore nothing else for several days, but soon realised the watch was simply too big for me. My trusty 38mm Railmaster Trilogy is once again my daily wear, but I still enjoy giving the GMT an occasional outing and I don't regret the purchase.
Wearing a Pam is like wearing eau de parfum, it is not for everyone but it certainly adds presence and character. You immediately become a part of something without knowing and people recognize it.
I think the Panerai are great watches with great heritage, they're not just my cup of tea. They're too big for my wrist and feel heavy. You have to be a Swarznegger or a Stallone to pull this watch off.
For me Panerai has always been a grail since I got into this hobby, finally after 12 years I was able to afford one and I'm really happy with it. It's kind of a watch that could easily become a heirloom that you can pass on to the next generation. Due to its chunky and straightforward build it will look great even after years of heavy use. Most other luxury watches wont look that great after a couple years of use when the initial shine is worn of. When I spend a significant amount of my hard earned money on a wrist watch, this kind of longevity appeals to me and I think I'm not alone in this line of thinking.
Always enjoy your videos. Like you, I found the Schwarzenegger-scaled watches were just too big. Then -- they introduced the 42mm submersible. The 42mm watch is a very wearable size. Now they have the 38mm due which is a great unisex size. Panerai is also innovating in materials. Look no further than the PAM00950 Submersible Carbotech 42 MM to find something that is interesting, wearable and not Richard Mille pricing. They are also introducing interesting dials. Where else but Panerai can you get a Shark Grey dial (PAM00959 or PAM00982). Consider the Luminor Due Goldtech Madreparia (PAM01280) for an unconventional women's watch. Keep the great content coming!
Some great points there Teddy. I agree with the issue of similar looks across many many references, and the 'in-house' issue with some refs. There are Watch Enthusiasts/Collectors and Watch Investors/occasional wearers. Panerai does nothing for those obsessed with getting financial return from a watch. Simple. I think Panerai have a very beautiful and unique proposition. It is meant to be slightly bigger - if you can't handle the 44 or 47 then get a 42 - people just need to stop bitching about it because they secretly count ROI - go and wait on a list for another Generic Rolex Timepiece, or Hype watch and wear it with the other people who are using the same elevator as you (how original do you feel on that occasion) - but please just don't call yourselves watch enthusiasts.
Amazing how similar my story is as others. A watch I lusted over for ever - finally purchased a PAM118 about 6 years ago and it has served me well since. Great channel.
I'm surprised Jason Statham gets no mentions in these videos. He has a tight close-up of a PAM on his wrist in pretty much every movie he's in, and he is often prominently featured on the brand's website. When I think of famous people and watches, I think of Statham and Panerai.
If we were concerned with trends we'd all be wearing a BB58. The paradox is the less cool they are, the cooler (and cheaper) they become. You can spot one of these- or a fake from across the room. Even if it is a fake theme is a very chance the owner loves watches. And as for clones it never stopped anyone buying a Rolex. I don't have a Panerai but I do lust after one....still.
Panerai is a design and style icon. That will likely never change. And big guys wearing larger watches is not going out of style imo but I understand the brand making other sizes and appealing to a broader market
Love Panerai, not so much Richmont Panerai though. Only like the 1086 from the 'new' PAM's...it's about as close to an original 90's as you'll get. Richmont have also diluted the brand imo, PAM's should not have date windows, too many limited editions (like every other release)....just about money and nothing else. I'll stick to my old 111 :)
Panerai was my dream watch. Started with a 44mm luminor with leather band. (This was the big watch hype times) I went all the way up to a 47mm pam sub. (After few years I realized way to big of a watch. As cool as I think it looks) Now I'm at a 40-42mm case range. I still think panerai is a cool looking watch I hope they make more case sizes 40-44mm I think they should say goodbye to anything bigger than that.
On the same page with you, got the PAM 2392 and its my daily watch in the last weeks - supremely comfortable on my 7" wrist incl. with dress shirts and suits.
Agree 100% - I'm not a 'Paneristi' but this brand has nearly everything: a cool history, a unique and recognizable design language, brand recognition. I think it'll come back. When it does they might also want to 'pull a Rolex' and make them difficult to get. The main reason for Panerai hate at the end of the day seems to be the feeling that the brand is 'played out'.
@@sunshinesuen6998 actually they now have 38 and 40 mm models now. quality I have no idea, but I don’t think they are that bad. But normal diver costs like 9k..
I bought a knock-off luminor case/dial/hands on Ali Express and a pulled a Bulova 16AB (Unitas 497) movement out of a 55 year old pocket watch and assembled my own Panerai homage. Total cost
Well I agree on they were very hot for various good reasons in the 2000s but now they are simply out of fashion and their fans still show their watches to other owners…but I think newcomers to this watch collecting hobby don’t buy Panerais.
I own a PAM 312 with the P9000 movement and I love it. It has the exposed caseback which is something missing from the latest versions and thats a shame.
P9010 in 2021 models was downgraded in the below aspects: 1) finishing: which is now sand balsted instead of brushed 2) its not hacking anymore 3) closed case back to hide the changes The problem is that they don't mention the changes, and claim its the same 9010 with pictures of older higher end movement. I love panerai, but i dont trust their quality and claims which is preventing me from pulling the plug.
These reasons are why I dodged them to start my collection. I've adored their product but I would feel slighted if my only watch didn't have a display back or had fewer features than the pieces that attracted me to the brand.
Need help. I’m deciding between Tudor black bay 41mm or Panerai 1084. I know two diff watches but my fear is Panerai too much bling and will get damaged easily
Just bought one of these cuz I've always liked them, needed a new EDC, and remember hearing Future rap about them in the 2010's.... Its interesting to find out how much history is behind the brand. It was worn by Italian Frog Men Torpedo riders(video available), founded by a man named Gweedo Panerai, getting their movements made by Rolex, producing watches for the Nazi's, then being reinvigorated to life during the pinnacle of Hollywood blockbuster action films in the 1990's by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Swartznegger? Tell me something fascinating behind the history of a 400k RM
