I was a watch collector for years but the prices are so high now and all these watch channels in my feed encourage me to buy $7000+ watches on a regular basis. How many people can do this? Don’t you have other expenses like mortgage payments or your kid’s college tuition? Feels like a bubble and I’m out of the game. Such a shame because I still have my grails.
It can be done if you are focused on your life. No debt, not buying with cards rather ewry exe. 2 ares yust put aside 300€,$ and you hawe 7000+€ and you don't feal it yust not buy stupid things. . Ewry hobby is expensive MTB full susp. Cost 4,500€ whic is on the fence and in 1 are you put 2,3t€ in bike. That I don't understand . 2 kids 4grand for bikes .😅that is robery. I wish for Christmas's Panerai 44 :)) yust one .
Totally agree with you! Watch prices have increased over the moon. Glad that I purchased my SMP in 2020 during low price period and my Avenger Chrono 43 used for a very good price. But I wouldn't buy the SMP for that current price... seems I am out of this game as well before it even started. But I am more than happy with my two stunning pieces❤
agreed, prices are crazy and over 1 or 2k you get less and less improvements for your money. Plus, the way some RU-vidrs talk about watches and how they make them feel...
Keep the 915! An in-house movement with eight days of power reserve is phenomenal! No doubt that it’ll cost a bit to service, but that’s high horology for you
It’s not a high horology piece. Power reserve isn’t a complication, it’s easily the most over rated spec on the market. A massive PR only matters if you never wear the watch. Many Panerai don’t even have a seconds hand let alone a date window- so how hard is it to set the time? Either way in order to get the full power reserve time, you’ve got a couple options- one is you need to wear the bell out of your watch for several days, for a full work day and then some, or you need to do a whole lot of time winding the watch. All that just so you can put it away for a week and still come back to it running? Way overrated. The time spent winding a watch with such a PR, you could have set the date in time and been on to other things faster. Don’t buy a watch based on specs alone.
@@albertopolini1970 If you’re wearing it actively for almost ten hours a day, sure it’s going to wind itself sufficiently to make it to the next day. That would be the case even if the power reserve was something more modest such as say 50-70 hours. No problem. You are wearing the watch daily and possibly relatively active. For someone who simply rotates through several watches a day or week (not my style) they would likely need to spend those three or four minutes winding the watch by hand. It’s a bit of a false economy if the watch is mostly sitting.
@@waterfordrs22you are absolutely f’ing. clueless. The 915 is a manual wind watch. It doesn’t have a rotor and it doesn’t wind itself when you wear it.
177 all the way! You can have the Unitas 6497 movement serviced by any competent watchmaker. As we know, Panerai never made watches (except for the Egiziano) but only supplied the dials. Rolex made the case and movement for Panerai. Also used were Cortebert and Angelus movements so it certainly would have made sense for Giuseppe Panerai (pretending he was alive and still owned Panerai today) to equip the watches with a unitas 6497 movement. Let’s not forget that these were bare-bones military watches made for human torpedo frogmen!
One thing I've learned is just as there's buyer's remorse, there is also seller's remorse. Many decide to sell a watch only to kick themselves later down the road. And sometimes they even offer to buy the watch back. Or hunt for another one elsewhere. It is also true that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and your story about the rugged dude wearing the more rugged watch reminded me of that. If you didn't already own it, had he been wearing yours I bet you still would have lusted after it. Both are great watches from a brand loaded with history. Neither one could be classified as a "mistake" purchase. Not by any means. YMMV. Keep up the fun content. I liked the video even before you reminded me!
Well said. I regret all the watches I sold. I did sell them to buy other ones but looking back I know that I should have done the financial effort to buy the new ones without selling any of my watches.
I have PAM118. Like 177 it's Titanium but with a tobacco dial. I wouldn't trade it for new one. Not about specs its about feel at end of day. Also in house Panerai has no credibility. ETA is cheaper and easier to service plus vintage and neo vintage Panerai never had in house movements. It was always Rolex or ETA. The brand is about dials, lume, and cases at the end of the day. So go for feel not for movement specs.
"that's 196 hours for those of you gifted in multiplication" which I guess you're not 😜 8 days is 192 hours. But whatever your video is great and I love your channel!
Nice video and congrats! I continue to both love and hate Panerai. Love the watches but really dislike the corporate leaders mismanagement of the brand. But, all that said, I get why you’d want one (me too!). I honestly think I prefer the 915, but I understand your choice!
Dude, why you go and cheat on your first love? Just keep both. They are both amazing pieces… you’re so detail oriented you’ll always be able to discern /appreciate the subtle differences .
Keep the 177 because of the way it makes you feel! It's unadulterated TOOL watch and you have other watches to fill that more dressy avocado-toast type of days. :) There are SO many great Pam watches out there so you can always pick up another one down the road if needed/wanted.
@@WatchCrunchOfficial It wasn't until recently that Panerai closed the back on the 915. When it first came out it was an open case back. I know because I have one.
@@joakimdrake1677 Far out man, thank you for that!! I'm hunting my perfect PAM and a 915 just came up (V serial). It has exhibition case back, but online I see the 915 has a closed case back. That explains it!
Hi Max, I've learned over the years : my buying decision is mostly derived from the specs (case weight, caliber, etc.). However, what I ware is ALWAYS motivated by feelings. 177 all the way baby 😉 On a side note, I love your strap pairing, you really have an eye for this.
Bought new Luminor Chronograph Pam01109 at an AD (Nov 2023)....my favorite daily now even over my sea-dweller anniversary. I want to say that I have wanted a Panerai for years, not necessarily this model, and finally pulled the trigger (also an impulse buy). I actually get a lot of compliments on it (especially from watch enthusiasts). The distinctive case you can see from across the room is really the key to these watches (sort of like the Rolex date bubble) but the overall look and feel is just lux/high quality.
Wayne was one of Stephen Harper’s only celebrity endorsements. Great with a hockey stick but a bit of a moron. But, yes, expensive men’s trinkets are fun to talk about.
I don't see it as a buyer's remorse. I see the discovery of the 177 as a different experience altogether and should be separate from your ownership of the 915. The range of Panerai watches is so vast that you'd get a different kind of feel with different ones, even with the same case designs but with different materials or even finishes. (You should try one of those PAMs with brushed Brunito steel. Still steel but feels and wears very differently). I suggest keeping and enjoying both for a while.
They are too similar to make a substantial difference. If you already bought the one you think that you REALLY wanted, then just keep it. Or keep them both! It's not like you bought a Rolex Daydate and now have buyers remorse for a Daytona. Take it in stride.
Look, don't look for excuses or go around so much... you sell the panerai because you need $$$... WE ALL GO THROUGH MOMENTS LIKE THIS... having to sell something because we need every last coin
Funny about what you said about grade 2 titanium. I had the original blue pelagos that uses grade 2. I remember telling someone that it honestly felt like plastic at times. Like, it was so light, but there was something about the metal that almost felt fake. I couldn't quite describe it. Then I later had a Grand Seiko snowflake, and that titanium was luxurious and soft... wild what a difference it makes.
Last year I was buying my first Panerai. And I would say i pick up the right one. Pam560 with painted dial, 8 days of power reserve and 300 hundred meters water resistance. I don’t get why panerai is changing in this case
I am picking up my 915 later today, I like the 177 but I don’t trust buying a used panerai, the AD gave me 12% off the retail price and 12 months finance with no interest, that’s pretty good if you ask me
They are way too similar to keep them both IMO. The ti version is much cooler and it sounds like it gives you that Panerai feel/experience more than the steel. No one gets a Panerai to feel subtle or refined. Go big (ti) and cash out on the shiny steel.
I absolutely get this. To the point that the polished case is a deal breaker for me. Even with sand which lume and a better movement Matt finish, titanium are my prerequisites, no bigger than 44. Within those parameters I would consider the models they have. Some like how a polished case gets scratched up but I don’t
Keep the 177 for sure, i would sell the 915 for a 2 hander base model like a 112 or if you like the newer stuff then a 914... better yet a 372 if your wrist can handle it..
If you fall in love with a watch, then you must do ur homework first..You should not have even bought it...Panerai history is crap: they never made their own movements, invented nothing novel, made their fame supplying a fascist governent with 'tools' , and their current quality on close inspection is sub-par. Highly informed colelctors avoid it. The brand only exists only through the continuous hype around it. Walk away.
Be careful of how you care for your titanium Panerai. Rugged is a marketing material term. Steel is more versatile materials. Scratches and dents can be repaired through polishing and laser welding techniques. Dropped my ltd edition 1279, dented the lug. The repair was costly and the watch was sent to Panerai in Switzerland for the case to be replaced. Lead time 80 days.
My first Valentines Day with my now wife was a Kings game where she saw Gretzky play. Not very romantic but if she’s experiencing buyer’s remorse she’s done a great job of hiding it the past 28 years.
Nice video and thanks for sharing this! It's re-assuring to know that even a RU-vid watch nerd can make missteps. Quick question. Where did you end up selling your watch? What's the best place to sell a pre-owned watch?
haiya - why wanna make your life so difficult they both looks the same, just but more / different straps lar dont waste $$ on flipping watches that looks 99% the same
If your not in a desperate position financially , as a doctor you probably are not , so why sell a perfectly good watch Max . Keep both , dilemma solved . Both different watches and both fantastic watches to own !
i have PAM176.......with PAM177 is THE Panerai, in titanium is real tooltastic! also don't like fake patina......also you dint need 8 days of power reserve.....
You got me there with the title. Welcome to the Panerai rabbit hole. It might end with you being cynical about the brand and selling your tenth model, a 127. Enjoy the ride, it’s odd and wild.
It's sad that watches that look good cost over 1k+. amzwatch watches are REALLY well made, and it just shows how a brand name on a watch can make its price 10x higher. I understand that if you look under a microscope, you'll find the difference, but just how many of you really inspect a watch at that level when you see someone with a watch?
I too get the buyers remorse. I recently returned a piece, a very expensive piece at that. I kept it in its case and I didn't remove any of the plastic protection coatings on the bracelet, case or back. Luckily for me I am a good client of the business so they gladly refunded me and happily took the watch back. 2 days later I went back in and purchased my first choice , so it's safe to say go with your gut and if you are doubtful at purchasing like I was don't do it just for the impulsive action.
Dealers can't even differentiate between real and fakes at Panerai so good luck with that. Absolute garbage. Sell sell sell sell that shit. If you can.
I got my grail Rolex Thunderbird many years ago. Should've stopped then, lots of other watches now that I like, but starting to regret the whole lot - except the Thunderbird. I think I'll feel better about all this if I cull down to a tight little collection, and then move on to another obsession
This is not a good situation. The two watches are close enough that you can’t keep both. And given you bought the first one at AD (and not preowned), you are gonna get hit when you try to get rid of it. Tough situation.
I'm currently deep into Panerai research, and it's actually beyond confusing with all the references, so it's understandable that the PAM177 slipped past you. I always thought a 44mm Pam on my barely 7-inch wrist would be too big, but having recently tried on a 45mm Rad I realised I was worrying about nothing! Ideally I'd prefer a 42mm Luminor but I don't care for the 1950 case shape, so I've narrowed my options down to a PAM111 or PAM183, both sandwich dial, exhibition case back, same movement, effectively the same watch just Luminor vs Radiomir, but the Titanium PAM177 is also a contender. The hunt continues... My view - Keep the PAM177... because it's a better looking / feeling watch 🙂
I really want a 1226 or 2223 - but just think Panerai is living in the past - at $6500-7000 my order would be in - just don’t have the value of Rolexes (yeah, I know I can’t get one at MSRP) in the $9000-11000 range.
Based on your own words used to describe the watches, it seems pretty obvious you prefer the 177's brushed aesthetic. Objectively there is no right or wrong answer here. It's entirely personal. Watches have never been about specs alone, especially when deciding between 2 near identical watches. The one thing I'd say before you fully commit to swapping for the 177 is be absolutely sure you're ok with the extra thickness. That's one of those things that's easy to look past when you see it on someone else or in pictures but might hit different on your own wrist. Give it time to consider.
Hi Max. I personally prefer your first buy since I never liked titanium cases. It gives a “dirty aspect” to the watch in my opinion. I owned a Luminor Marina since about 17 years now and I still love it. My only regret is that I owned a manual winding one that I don’t wear often enough just because the hand winding drives me crazy, but otherwise the watch looks great 😊. Actually I’m going right now to my safe to get it. I’m going to wear it for awhile ☝️
@WatchCrunchOfficial It is easy to full in love and out of love with some watches. Do you what makes you happy. No substitute for happiness. We collectors have had to experiment with some watch models. It is all part of The Journey.
Please stop with these videos… you’re gonna make me get kicked out of my house. Also how comfortable is the titanium? I don’t have big wrist but I can get away with 43MM max…
