Hey Layne. I watched your interview with Rich Roll and toward the end you said that being in this line of work can be frustrating because there can be this sense that you're not making a difference. Well about 10 years ago I emailed you and told you that I was just dumped by my girlfriend, was like 80lbs overweight and a drunk. I told you that I was going to start to rebuild my life with everything you taught about diet and fitness and use that as a bedrock to turn my life around. Well now im jacked, got her back, have two kids, I'm sober and financially successful and stable. Obviously there was a lot more to it than that but you were the inflection point and my point of reference for a long time while I was struggling to keep grounded. You made a difference to me man. The whole difference.

@@ThatGuy2428 Why would you want to maximize protein? Could you please provide any reason why the average person needs more than 1.2 g/kg of protein; or over 1.6 g/kg if your a typical weightlifter trying to gain muscle ASAP. Even Brad Schoenfeld, a leading expert on bodybuilding and protein consumption says you're not going to get any significant muscle growth by consumer over 1.6 g/kg. A person can easily build or maintain muscle with 1.2 g/kg. So your answer can not be to build muscle, because the research is clear. The only reason is that protein is a money maker; fiber is not. Also, I don't know what moderation is. That's more nonsense to get people to buy junk food.

Bodybuilders, before the age of rampant performance enhancing drug (PED) use, ate large amounts of protein and had perfectly normal longevity rates. Lifespans for bodybuilders only started to decrease after PED usage increased in dosage. This demonstrates that as long as one has healthy kidneys, a large quantities of protein is not deleterious.

I honestly doubt that vegans were the target audience. Even Dr Nagra ripped this article apart by showing that, no matter the source, higher protein intake increases longevity. He just talked about the benefits of protein for lbm and muscle growth. Great, that is a well understood benefit of protein. That doesn't address the cancer and heart health concerns of eating too much protein which are legit. I know china study is often dismissed but there are a lot of links to cancer with igf1 and animal protein - layne would love to hear you address those concerns more head on

The problem is now the plant based guys are saying even vegans need to get down to RDA. Getting down to RDA is basically impossible unless you restrict calories or eat isolated sources of carbs. Neither of those seems healthy. I’m Whole Foods plant based and double the RDA without even trying. There’s a difference between what they used to say about animal protein and what dr. Gregor is saying now, which includes plant sources too.

I’m a Whole Foods plant based athlete and the issue that I have with the PB docs saying we need to eat RDAs of protein for longevity and cancer prevention is that it’s just not pragmatically possible. I need 3000 to 3400 calories a day. If I eat that from whole plant foods I double the RDA without even trying. That’s not with added powders or fake meat or even high amounts of soy or beans. It’s just too easy to get protein from Whole Foods. Everything has it and it adds up. The problem is that Dr Gregor says it’s not restriction it’s just going to recommends levels. Those levels are pathetically low though. So it IS about calories/protein restriction. The lighter you are the less protein you need. So even if you’re scrawny and could get by on 1700 calories a day you would still be getting the RDA for a muscular man weighing 75 kilos. And if you’re thriving in 1700 calories then you are not a muscular man weighing 75 kilos. The math doesn’t work in reality. You would have to either eat non Whole Foods (a lot of dextrose or something) and/or you would have to me insanely sedentary to reduce caloric needs. None of this is healthy. So I will continue to do what I’ve always done. Which is eat enough calories to fuel my healthy athletic lifestyle and assume the docs are wrong with thier crazy low protein recommendations. Again, they aren’t saying we only need 60grams a day. They are saying going above that will give you cancer. Hard to believe.

America is not obese because of eating lean chicken, fish, beef in excess. What obese person says “I got fat because I was eating too much grilled chicken breast.” None. It is because of the overconsumption of fat and carbs. It simply doesn’t make sense. People would be way healthier if they ate more lean protein and limited saturated fats and didn’t over eat carbs. It’s important how Layne pointed out that the overall consumption of calories has increased, meaning that protein along with fats and carbs have increased and this article is simply picking out the protein for the authors agenda.

Yeah, protein or calorie intake in the last 110yrs hasn't really gone up in the US. Has been some deviations, but pretty stable. Quite a few have been eating too much protein the whole time. It would appear eating too much of anything is not good for you. Adjusting for height differences, protein and calories would be down compared to 110yrs ago. I guess usage of protein and calories is down more, so protein intake is up, on what we need. Protein is too expensive to be eating too much to be just pissing it up against the wall.

I have lost over 30 lbs by eating 200 to 300 g of protein per day keeping my calories under $2,000 per day. I feel great. Using foods like fat-free Greek yogurt is high in protein also whey protein shakes keep the protein High and the calories low.. then I switch up one meal a day of red meat fish or chicken

In 2024, the most foolish thing anyone can do is take a "peer reviewed study" seriously. The scientific community has not done itself any favors over the last 5 years, and if people can't hear the bias in these studies, I feel bad for them.

thanks for this video! but aren't you doing exactly the same right now as what they're doing? you're saying they're only painting part of the picture, but you also aren't mentioning the health-issues with eating animal products (certain meats and obviously processed meats being a class 1 carcinogen, etc)?

The audio quality on your videos is always so bad. Need to do some post processing IMO.
