I think there's a big difference between photographs and pictures. For most people the smart phone is convenient for casual pictures and that's great. Photographs on the other hand require a deliberate process that usually involves planning, composition and a good DSLR. On the downside, social media has produced a glut of pictures that for the most part, are unnecessary and counterproductive. Your eyes gloss over the 24 pictures your friend took over her favorite flower arrangement when 3 would have been fine. And downloading ALL the mediocre pxs on your phone of your vacation, including everything you ate, is unnecessary. Sorry about the ranting, but this is one of the reasons I quit Facebook.

Holy snobbery

Well said. I quit Instagram for a similar reason. I felt like no picture I took on my smartphone was "good enough" and I wasn't really enjoying photography because I guess I was chasing validation in terms of likes and comments, which is never really "enough" for social media standards. So I decided to take a break from photography and over a year later I tried getting back into it but with a DSLR camera instead of my smartphone. Surprise not surprise, I enjoy photography much more now and actually feel ready to learn more about it in terms of technicality.
@Franz.
@Franz. Год назад
Even worse, sometimes people would also upload the "failed" pictures with the ones they like so its just a mess of a few good pics with a lot of attempts at one. Sounds snobby but i dont think anyone really needs to see 3 pictures of the same group of people who havent moved in any of them but one shot is underexposed, the other is over, and the other out of focus

For me the overriding reason to use a dedicated camera is the ergonomics. Much easier to adjust settings, hold the camera still, and keep charged (via battery swapping) than a phone. Also better with moving subjects.

A nice comparison. The rise of phone cameras is mostly due to "the camera you have with you" being the only one that matters. What I'd like to see is a comparison of the kind of photos each of these can produce when used to take photos of an event at a local high school gym (high school sports in low (usually off color) light). Setting aside focus and off color, what can they capture when limited to higher shutter speeds to catch moving objects in low light?

Point and Shoots: still relevant for those who want SUPER ZOOMS that fit in your pocket. ASPC: relevant for those who want pro-like cameras that are smaller and cost less. Full frame: Basically pro level/highest quality. Smartphone cannot do what those 3 do so they're all relevant in 2020!

We need to watch content that is not all Covid related for sure. Oh man, this video is exactly what we needed. We currently shoot with both our G7X and iPhone, but we also do notice the quality is often still better with the G7X after editing. Our main thing is that we want a compact camera, it has to work in low light, track our faces and have somewhat decent image stabilization. The G7X is not quite cutting it anymore for video quality so we're researching our next camera... but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it either. ( no more than $800-$1K ideally) Really useful video. Thank you for putting this together.

As a beginner in photography and using a very basic camera I believe what really makes the difference are the lenses and what you intend to do as a photographer, I think cell phones are just a way to photograph yourself but will never replace compact cameras that were made only for this

@KyleCWong
@KyleCWong 4 года назад
Great video! I think it's also important to talk about equivalence between the different cameras. With just the kit lens on the M50 vs the 1.8-2.8 lens on the G7X - technically the G7x will perform better in lower light due to the faster aperture compared to the kit lens. Comes out to about (for 35mm equivelent) : M50 - 24.3mm f/5.67 - 72.9mm f/10.21 G7X - 23.76mm f/4.86 - 99.36mm f/7.56 Also one thing I really like about the G7X is that it has a built in ND filter which allows you to use a wider aperture when shooting video for that nice bokeh vloggers like to have

Good review and quite an interesting subject as well. I use DSLRs mainly but as a "lightweight carry" option when I want to have less weight/bulk I have a system built around Canon's M series. However in the past this latter function was covered by point and shoot cameras that could shoot RAW and an example was a Canon G9 that I bought probably 10 or so years ago, later gave to someone and which recently "came back" to me so I have been using it out of curiosity. It is fun, far slower on read/write compared with current models obviously but actually from a stills photographer's perspective, viable. On the question as to whether I would buy an equivalent camera today, my answer would be no because a compact system camera like the M series offers a lot more but that said, what a point and shoot does offer is the ability to take it out of your pocket and grab an image without any fuss :)

I love compact cameras... it makes me feel much that I am giving my hobby a niche refinement... but then on the other side it's hard to take them around, and they can be little non-reliable (AFs, WB, DY-Rng etc...).. and computational photography is like some expert photoshopper is working behind the scene for me each time I click from my smartphone... I guess if a compact camera with larger sensors can get more from Softwares (at least in AUTO mode ) more people will buy and enjoy compact cameras. (i own a Fujifilm XF10 (Compact cam) & XT20 and Huawei p10 from 2017)

Another reason why the smartphone killed the cheaper compact cameras is that zoom is not important to many people. In the days of 35 mm film cameras, non zoom compacts were incredibly popular - especially with tourists.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and a M50 with the kit lens and the nifty fifty. The M50 is so great when you know you'll be shooting an event (weddings, birthday parties) or a lot of staged photos but you won't take it with you all the time. The iPhone is great for "Oh cool, let me just make a photo of that" moments. But since I want to get into street photography more and in general want something that combines much of the control-power (if that makes sense) of the M50 with the quick access and availability of the iPhone I ordered a GR III. For the past 6-8 months I tried to get more out of the iPhone with apps like the Moment app but while they indeed allow you to take more control, you also lose a lot of the quick access nature of smartphones. I'm curious how the GR III will work out for me, if it'll become a camera that I have always with me and I use on a daily basis or if it will become just a camera on my shelf waiting to be sold. Of course, with the current situation, there will be not much going out and shooting photos ^^"

@bfs5113 4 года назад
@@HyunRalphJeong Actually, shooting with a smartphone has many advantages, such as proving to oneself that he/she can shoot with any cameras; getting surprises like shooting with film; learning composition & problem solving instead of playing with camera features; etc. For instance, without the desired focal length, how can we visualize/capture what we see in front of us differently and making it a masterpiece (Star Trek's Kobayashi Maru Scenario)? The same for lack of MP, dynamic range, etc. That is what newbies should be learning instead of asking for rules and more advanced technology that will be available in leaps and bounds each year. I think it is similar to Diane Arbus avoided loading film in the camera as an exercise in truly seeing. 😊

I think for most people point and shoots don't really have a place. Phone's now days can shoot very comparable images to a point and shoot due to software processing. While the images from point and shoots are better the differences are quite marginal in most situations and It wouldn't really justify spending a few hundred dollars on an external camera when your phone can already shoot good photos. In my opinion if you want to get into the photography you may as well go all the way and get a proper DSLR or Mirrorless. It usually doesn't cost too much more (than a good point and shoot that is) and you get better image quality and more options in the future (lens and attachments) adding much more value to the product. The only downside is portability which with mirrorless camera's and the right gear isn't even that bad.

I want to say that I am a long time dslr user (over 10 years on Nikon, 3 of them full frame, but this black friday I'm switching to Sony :) ) , I have a S9+ and I tested my cousin's S20+ and also have a Panasonic LX100 II for vacation purposes. So I know a lot about cameras in general and know what smartphones can do too. Well, I can say for sure that modern top smartphones made low cost and average compact cameras obsolete, but not top ones. My 2 years old LX100 II with micro 4/3 sensor can still easily beat any smarthone in existance(for now at least ) , for image quality . But I still about think about selling my compact camera and getting the S21+/ultra in february 2021 (my aging S9+ needs replacing anyway) . But maybe if Panasonic will come out with a revolutionary LX 100 III/LX200 or Sony with a great RX100 VIII I will jump on it , who knows... Smarthphones are just a lot more portable and convenient and if you don't really need ultimate image quality (99% of regular people don't) point and shoots don't really make sense anymore. Also dslr's in 2020 are like dinosaurs, I wouldn't buy one, not even a great one like the D850 or 5d mk IV , mirrorless is the future, that's why I'm getting a A7R III for black friday and all 3 Tamron 2.8 trinity lenses. I was sick of carrying the 7kg dslr bag in vacations for a week or more, I came back from vacations a lot more tired that when I left lol :)) Practicly comming back, I needed a vacation from the vacation =))That's why I got the smaller camera, it was just a relief for my back and neck. I just wish the telephoto part were better. At 3x and 4x the photos looks good, 10x is barely usable, at 20 and 30x unusuable. If they put a 6x and 8x option and max it at 10x it would have been much better. I have two small Fuji F500 point and shoot cameras that I use for construction site visits. And 4 batteries and 2 chargers. I prefer using them over my camera because of the zoom in and zoom out lever, the real shutter button, the great flash, the really really easy way to turn the flash on and off on the go, the ease of taking out the SD card and popping in a SD card reader I have stuck in my computer, and most of all I don't have to worry about reducing the charge on my phone. When I run. I take a Canon G15 with me. Because I can set it to give me 3 HDR exposures in RAW format. Which gives me the nice skies I like in the evening and morning. And again it doesn't use my phone battery juice. I may be the last person in the world using the older smaller sensor point-and-shoots. But I really like them.

yes its indeed a horrific time. Moving on. i was debating myself, should i get an iphone 11pro. or should i get an actual camera. like a sony rx100 m6 or m7. i know the m7 is a similar price with the 11pro. it kinda makes more sense if i got the phone. for you can do more on it. where as the m6 use to be a similar price with the 11pro. now its like half quarter of the 11pro 's price. But overall. i am most likely to get the actual camera. because iphone 11pro is limited with optical zoom. it rely's on digital zoom, which will lose its quality. where as the actual camera can go further and not lose its quality. Another thing that bugs me is. the battery life of the 2. actual camera is most likely to drain quicker than the iphone. but eventually within time iphone battery will too drain quicker. but for the actually camera. But All i have to do is buy a higher compacity battery for the camera. i do want you to do a video test some day. iphone 60fps, camera 60fps. would love to see a review on that. its battery life. its quality. its zoom. etc. maybe when you have time. i havent bought any camera or phone yet. prob wait till the whole mess to end first.

P&S originates as a focus free (zone focusing) with programmed (preset) exposure camera for the general public for snapshots and easily taken over by smartphones. For many photographers, It is liked mobile music listening using their smartphones (replaced the Walkman) with bundled earbuds, instead of a dedicated Portable Music Player (PMP) and better In-Ear Monitor (IEM). IMO, many of today's better P&S (the 'low end' cameras for photographers) are really compacts, packed with advanced AF & AE technologies, with the trade-off of sensor size for convenience.

I was bit suprised how the G7X was better in the low light than M50 with kit lens. I was assuming that the bigger sensor would compensate for the slower lens.

Yeah, but 1.8 and 3.5 is a pretty big difference. 3.5 on full frame maybe will make more difference

As I mentioned in the video, technically all these cameras including smartphones are mirrorless cameras because they don’t have mirrors like SLRs

I have an iPhone SE 2020 and various cameras (all Canon) including PowerShot A2300, G1 X, SX730 and a 6D Mk2. I'll nearly ALWAYS have at least one real camera on me, biggest reasons being that they generally shoot better in all conditions, have a real optical zoom lens, and even if my phone dies, I can still take pictures and importantly still tell time. Finally, when I have a dedicated camera I'm less prone to being distracted by something when I open up my phone and it opens me up to enjoy what's in front of me. However, having a good and simple automatic camera on my phone is nice when I just want to snap something to a friend or a quick Instagram post. PS - My simple tip for getting decent smartphone photos? Don't zoom, give it lots of light, and get close!

Love my Panasonic DMC-TS4. Waterproof to 40 feet, shockproof from 6 feet, etc. When I go out for fun I reach for my adventure cam. I wish manufacturers would come out with an enthusiasts next generation adventure cam that did raw, big sensor, sharp-sharp lens 4k, bluetooth external mic, etc.

I still find that Digital photo cameras are relevant in 2020: Full-formats, APS-C DSLRs, Point and Shoots, even Four Thirds... Very relevant ones. So even if smartphones now include "great" cameras, those are just that: smartphone cameras.

Bought an Olympus Pen E-PL10 camera and 14-150mm lens, never having anything like this before but told this was the best lens. Only used a very small point and shoot at the moment. But wanted to learn photography properly while in this horrible virus lockdown. Beautiful quality and clarity and all those features BUT i found the lens quite heavy and cumbersome. So i had to sadly return it. 2 months on and still looking for a fixed lens camera that is as good as the Pen with all the features, and while having a very good zoom to take photos of things in the distance also. This review was very good, but still looking 🤔. Stay Safe.

If I have an iPhone 11 is it worth buying a Canon Powershot sx540? The camera has 20.3 MP however it only costs $250. I'm worried the images won't be better than my phone quality.
@HyunRalphJeong
@HyunRalphJeong 4 года назад
Well, in some cases, it will be better, but I don't think you'll notice a big difference unless you get an interchangeable lens camera with a good lens.

Sorry to chip in , the Canon would have incredible superzoom like at least 45 times and above ,which will be better than iPhone in the zooming department .

I have a Samsung smartphone but I don't use it all that much for photography. For one thing, it has the ergonomics of a bar of soap. Although I have a Panasonic GH5 and a Nidon D300, I find myself taking most of my pictures using my old Canon G12 with which I have taken thousands of pictures. I especially like its articulating screen which allows me to take discreet pictures without attracting attention. I recently acquired a Fujifilm X100T which I am using more and more.

I bought a Canon elph 190 is last year and for me it was one of the best investments I made.. It takes really good pictures and in my opinion the photos seem to be much crisper then pictures taken with a smart phone. I can't help compare pictures taken by my camera and smart phones because everybody that does reviews claim that smart phones are just as good as a point and shoot camera. Although I do not own a smart phone, I have taken pictures with smart phones for people and I really find them hard to use because I can only use one hand and so a camera is a lot easier for me to . The other thing, I love my camera is the fact I can use a tri pod, I like the self timer and being able to zoom in.

Absolutely true! No matter how good the smartphone cameras become, it'll never be able to replace a point and shoot camera which is basically meant for photography.

one thing that a point and shoot that phones and DSLRs/mirrorless cameras can't beat is when the point and shoot has manual controls AND a superzoom that reaches 700mm and above even the best phone cams today with the multiple lens setup simply just can't compete with the image quality of a point and shoot especially at night. for example, the sony HX series are not only on par (or exceeding) entry-level DSLRs in terms of image quality but they also have like 40x optical zoom and up to maybe 100x digital zoom and the low light performance, especially when shot on manual mode OR the image stacking system of sony, then it easily defeats both DSLR and phone camera since it is WAY smaller and lighter AND cheaper then, of course, you have high end point and shoots such as the fujifilm X100V and the sony RX100v which both produces professional-level imaging quality that tops even midrange DSLRs/mirrorless systems. BUT the most important factor on why point and shoots are, in fact, some of the best sellers today (stats don't lie) is that they have two niches: travel photographers and vloggers. literally these two niches changed how companies make point and shoots... effectively killing all "low end" point and shoots and giving way for the "compact" or "travel" category of point and shoots with manual controls and deep video settings

I need to buy my mother (65 yrs old) a simple older digital camera. Preferably from ebay or amazon if I can't find it on ebay. What digital camera still has batteries and components for sale if her battery stops working? We had 3 we dug out of boxes: a casio, a sony cybershot, and a another one and none of them worked after years in storage. So what can I buy now that's older and NOT professional grade but simple? I wanted a kodak easy share with the printer but if they stopped making them in 2012 :( I doubt the parts are still available. She can't use a cell phone to take pics so no professional camera suggestions please. Simple is the key.

Canon Powershot 190 is cheap, you can also find slightly older / higher grade powershots online for not even $100. Canon standardize their batteries, they're pretty much the same regardless of the camera so it's reassuring.

"I know how ridiculous it is to be talking about cameras and photography at a time like this." Not at all, Ralph! I'm glad there are people who try their best to make life goes on as usual as possible, while taking care of themselves and be vigilant. You stay safe and take care too! Oh, I personally think point and shoot cameras are still relevant. Depends on each use cases and necessities, though. I have an X100F and always make it my go-to camera whenever I don't want to bring a bulky interchangeable lens camera. Am interested to get a used X70 too, since it is much compact than X100F :D

It isn’t. Art, and especially documentation that photography provides is important. Think about it: when we look to the past, what do we usually see? Photographs from those eras. They bring the history of humanity to the present allow an extremely humanist glimpse into our own past. If people stopped creating art and photography during WW1 and the first H1N1 Pandemic, we would have no idea what came of the struggles of our forefathers. Art and humanism is always important, especially in times like these.

Really excellent video! I own a point & shoot super zoom Canon, an iPhone Xr & an Olympus interchangeable (four thirds). I use my Canon P&S almost never now unless I’m going out to shoot birds and am too lazy to haul a big lens around. I carry my iPhone the most obviously and only that with me when I’m birdwatching in Spring because I don’t want to carry a camera with my binoculars. My Olympus is a beautiful work of art that looks like the cameras I used to pine for when I was young in the 1970’s. When I carry it, I feel like a “real” photographer and generally love the results. That last statement sounds kind of shallow, but having a tool that is so well designed and crafted can make for a better artist - it’s just how humans are, sorry. Hey, at least I don’t own an iPhone just so I can constantly take selfies (not that there’s anything wrong with that)...

Seems to me that a smartphone camera is great and can have really nice results if you just want something that can take nice pictures without too much work on the end user. On the other hand, a better dedicated camera really stretches its legs with manual controls and manual image editing to bring out their best where they blow away even a really nice smartphone camera like the ones on iPhone, Samsung's high-end etc. I think for me, smartphone it is, but I think I will end up getting something better for when I really need that added precision. It just so happens that smartphones do most things really well, and well enough for most people, which is why cameras seem to be so far on the decline. Whereas just a handful of years ago, smartphone cameras weren't NEARLY as good. I think it was around the Galaxy Note 4 where I was like "Wow, I could replace my point and shoot (at the time) with this." And I did, and it's worked MOSTLY well, but had always suffered in low light most of all, which has been improved greatly...

I don't like smartphones and I mainly only use my DSLR at events like classic car shows so I still happily use point and shoot cameras for daily photography outside of the house since they fit easily in my front pants pocket and I can buy them at thrift stores for $10 Canadian or less. The Canon G7X III with its relatively hefty "1 inch" (13.2 x 8.8 mm) sensor featured in this video is the next level of point and shoot compared to the 1/2.3 inch (6.17 x 4.55 mm) sensor point and shoot pocket cameras I use (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH27 and Canon ELPH 100HS).

I own a LX10 and a T7i. I feel I never use the LX10 :(.... I bought it to have something small I can carry around. But it just didn't work out for me because; lol, I can't figure out how to use it. By this point I know the T7i like the back of my hand. And I feel the more I use it the better I get a it. I feel like I have to fight with the autofocus on the P.A.S. and end us just flipping it to auto and letting it do it's thing.

Many point and shoots give you controls that phones do not. Combined with larger sensors & wifi...these are better tools even for social media shooters who take their photography seriously. Try taking a 30 second long exposure of the Milky Way with a phone for example. If you’re just a casual shooter though and only post your photos to social media...a phone will do fine.

Depends on how you shoot. P&S (e.g., Ricoh GR III) great for street; compact for travel (any of the Fujifilm cameras) iPhone for 'quick' shots. Or a humongous DSLR for landscapes, etc.

I owned a Nikon Coolpix P500 because i wanted long range, i sold it at the first chance that i had because the picture quality was bad and the stabilization was horrendous, a very bad camera. I bought the Panasonic FZ 200 after that, i kept it for years, great camera, but after i sold it, waited for like 3 years and then bought an M50, the picture quality of an APSC sensor was much much superior to anything i had before, point and shoot cameras are very convenient, they're good enough for most people, specially if they do 120fps slow motion, but you won't be fully pleased with the image quality at all, if your phone is capable of taking better photos.
