I didn't see the video but the R154 been the most reliable setup ever in racing on a budget. Here it costs around 1000$. My friend made 1138whp and mile went racing. Still holding up.
I'd be keen on an OG hoodie. Good memories of the rags to riches r33 build. Dont think ive ever laughed that hard in my life as when i first watched those vids.
From what I've heard there are two different types of R154s and they require different oils, I can't remember exactly but worth looking into. Hope this helps someone
That r154 has done well! Wonder if the twin plate is too much for it when clutch kicking, especially on 265s with lots of grip. Sprung single plate would be easier on it
Not junk, but just arent really equipped to deal with what they get put through these days. Back in the day it was 3-400hp and 235 street tyres, now everyones making 600+ and spinning 265 semis. I sold my 154 before it became a box of glitter and it funded most of my t56 swap. Bro the t56 swap with 4.3 diff is the way to go.
@@MayhemInc R154s are actually very different now to how these use to be made, once toyota realised there was a market for seeling them they cheapened the fuck out of the design: "We used the r154's for competition drifting with 400kw in-front of it, and during that time pulled apart 3 different r154's, 2 factory fitted boxes, one with remote shift the other without and then one new from toyota box, the old boxes when upgraded were awesome, fit the bearing plate mod, and shiftier forks (unfortunately only alloy available that i know of, off the shelf) but the late boxes which we refer to as the mexican r154s, were made to be alot cheaper, I even broke one when running it behind a n/a 2jz (so all of ~130kw?) On the inside of the gears where it would mate to the shaft instead of having teeth cut all the way around they have 3 teeth cut, then 3 missing and then 3 cut and so on, so you just strip these out quite easily, when disassembling the box, the main shaft normally has a 34mm? but holding it all together, but the mexican r154s have a pissy little circlip. Don't even get me started on the synco differences, we had toyota bring in 7 different syncro's to suit 4th gear and none of them fitted, ended up moding a r151 synco hub in there i think (mate does gearboxes for a job so this is just what i saw while him helping me with my r154's)"

Just pay a bit more or a lot more haha and put a dogbox in it, lots of good suppliers & support here. Cry now, laugh later, clutch kick it to death. Dog box is simpler than a janky old r154 haha
