I'm still waiting for somebody to figure out a way to get the 6-7-8 warp zone to load at the end of 1-2. There's already a scrolling-related bug that allows the 5-warp zone to load, if only there were some way to get that to increment a 2nd time.
Speedrunning is at least as much about improving your own time compared to getting WR. If somebody matches TAS, the category is only dead to them, everyone else still has a goal to shoot for.
I honestly think Niftski can match the TAS. It'll be a monthslong grind, at least, but considering this guy sets records weekly, I think it's possible.
4 years ago, a carpetless TAS for SM64 was made, in September 2023, someone managed to pull it off, and they did it on a single level run, not implemented into a full run so the chances of Niftski matching the TAS in a few months is insanely low, although he is cracked
Problem is, however, that the perfect TAS uses some inputs that cannot be physically done on a standard controller, so it may be impossible to match the TAS in that case
@@so_s_ That has absolutely nothing to do with this? SM64 is a 3D game that's infinitely more complicated than SMB1. On any given frame, a million different variables are at play, from Mario's angle to your exact analog stick positioning. In SMB1, there are three directions you can be holding on any given frame. Mario's angle is only -1 or 1. Everything in this game is simplified in comparison, which is why every single level in this game as been completed as fast as a TAS could by humans, while in SM64 there's only a couple stars that have been completed to TAS precision.
Well yeah but that will take year then we still have the lost levels but we may eventually conquer that but like that game is extremely hard for speed runs
Literally, Niftski is the current AndrewG of our era. It's honestly crazy to see on how one single man can bring the game's times down to crazy levels, and also, sometimes, at a crazily fast pace.
@@serbonkers4130 he's the og top SMB1 speedrunner and other games. He's been speed running for over a decade now. Just newer people has came to surpass him in SMB1 the last few years.
Niftski is a machine.. The speed at which he learns new tricks/strategies and sets new records is simply inhuman. I dare say he is in a league of his own in regards to his technical skills, adaptability, and most importantly, the speed at which he accomplishes his goals. His achievements really are mind-blowing.
It’s most definitely not the case for any game, look at the Minecraft TAS, look at the super Mario odyssey tas, even games as active as those humans are so far away and likely will never tie the tas, now think of all the dead categories where the tas has over 80+ frame perfect tricks, most games aren’t close or as optimized as this gam.
Wouldn’t be surprised if someone found some previously unknown trick that allows another speed up though. Speedrunning is full of “after 30 years Don Smizzle found you can skip the first wall by throwing your controller into a black hole at a precise angle”.
The issue in this game is that due to the frame rules, time can only be saved in longer increments (I think it's .3 seconds?) so the only real time saves are if you can squeeze out that much time on a specific level OR if it's on 8-4. I don't wanna say it can't happen, but we're getting pretty close to the end of the line on time saves.
@@SuperAmazingJared If I understood Kosmic correctly, there is a level where there is literally only 1 frame left to save in order to drop a framerule. So that might somehow be doable.
Honestly for Any% is literally just a category exclusive for niftski at this point 🗿 Also the fact that niftski caught every bus on time is crazy Edit: holy i haven’t had this many likes
Yes, of course, and perhaps that's the direction SMB speed running will go once the game is 100% optimized. Could also add a category where "illegal" inputs are allowed such as what is used in some of the TAS implementations.
What a crazy time to be a top SMB1 sppedruner. After decades of collectively optimizing the game, theyre now approaching times that can literally kill the speedrun
Honestly i don't think it's gonna be dead until someone gets a TAS perfect speedrun. It sounds impossible but we're so close it's not really out of range at this point
The run has been perfected in two segments (reaching 8-4 and frame perfect 8-4) it would be weird if stringing together just two segments in such a popular game never happened in a full game run.
hey just wanna to say that the voice training is going really well! also, glad to see you uploading again and fuckin hell niftski is inhuman. I dunno how that man does it, actually fucking absurd
Regardless of if we get an unbeatable world record, people will still run SMB to see how close they can get. It's too iconic of a game for people to stop playing it.
no, smb speedruns aren't dead yet, we're just witnessing the final stretch towards oblivion and the race is on :) Even then, we'll probably find some new strategies to make runs even more consistent and maybe new categories will be born like any% both quests where you gotta go through the harder second quest as well.
I’m not well versed in the rules of speed run rules, but aren’t you supposed to use original hardware, meaning that you need to use the original controller?
I mean, even if the fastest possible run does get achieved, everyone's still going to have their own limitations and still try to go for and improve their personal bests, so I don't see it ever being fully 'done'
The year is 20XX. Super Mario bros speedruns minimum time submission has reached 5 minutes. The average runner plays at beyond TAS level. Their minds no longer works in constantly moving neural networks, and have changed to running on framerules. Cybernetics have allowed for the average person to do every tas perfect trick. The speedrun leaderboards are ties all the way down to the 1000th place. The year is 20XX. Mario is dead.
I feel this speedrun is dead, since it's only being Niftski beating his own record. There's also like 3 chances(can't think of a proper word) left for a record holder (not counting ties). What I mean is, if this record gets beaten, and the next record gets beaten, and the next record gets beaten.. I'm pretty sure at this point the record would of reached human Limit.
I have known the framerule system for a long time but just now thought about why is is 21 frames and not any other number and I came to the the worst most logical explanation that the programmers counted from 0 to 20 (or in reverse) and had a frame for both 0 and 20 so instead of counting 20 frames as intended they had an off by 1 error and counted 21. Please tell me this is not the correct explanation and there is a better explanation.
Once 8-4 is perfected any% will be completed but the game wouldn’t be done yet as there is still warpless with 6 levels perfected as 1-2 and 4-2 are played differently as you go for the flag instead of the warp zone meaning there are 26 levels left to prefect for a warpless run
So how come they don’t frame boost on blocks that are floating by hugging the corner? It pushes you forward… unless that falls in the mentioned 21 frame rule
=NOPE,IT'S DONE...........................BC NISFTSKI WILL MAKE EVEN 8-4 PERFECTLY VERY SOON, THO ..................AND WHAT'S NEXT THO.........WHEN PEOPLE WILL MATCH MACHINES, THO
"It's surprisingly easy to beat smb in under 5 minutes." Didn't the god Ryukahr take a couple of days to get there? Or was it 4:55? If the former, then far from surprisingly easy!
If somebody eventually, one day, gets a perfect any% run on Super Mario Bros 1, I wonder if anyone else would have the motivation to tie that world record with how difficult it is, if they can no longer be the first person to do it? I mean, I guess if they're already incredibly close but get beaten to the punch, they might just decide in for a penny, in for a pound, but otherwise? I think I would be surprised. I imagine that getting a perfect run in any% glitchless would be easier to accomplish?
Speedrunning SMB1 isn't dead, it's (almost) complete. Beating the game has moved beyond "who can be the fastest", now moreso a collective passion towards pushing the game to its absolute limit
Wouldn’t it be dead once we match human theory TAS. Edit: human theory TAS differs from a regular TAS in that it’s limited to what a human could possibly do, instead of things a human can’t do. Like inputting left and right at the same time
I find this who community to be quite strange. However, I don’t know why anyone would think it’s going to be dead until a run has all the lowest times done on each level on one game.
Man, the idea of a game being dead speed run wise is strange. Does this mean that people will no longer run the game at all? Is there any other game that has been 100% killed and is no longer ran anymore?
So how on earth is it literally 100% impossible to discover a new trick? I’m so confused. Have players literally squeezed every single possible time save and there’s absolutely no time to save from the newest TAS whatsoever?
"He did what we once thought was impossible" Dude, that's like the 1 billionth time I hear that line with speed run of that game. Just you wait, next week someone will find a way to lower it by 1 second and the process will start all over again.
Nah man you don't understand. I have been following this shit for years now, techniques that were considered ridiculously difficult and only able to be performed by machines 5 years ago are required and no longer even the most important part of the run. 5 years ago, nobody thought this would ever be done, it was a pipe dream. You don't know
No one has found a new time save in this game for over 10 years, with the exception of a single frame in 8-4. Every single time save that’s been implemented in the run over recent years has been known about for over a decade. All the progress that’s been made in RTA runs have been from finding human viable ways to do them.
I said it 3 years ago, I'm still gonna say it now: This category will be perfected within the 2020s. But this time I have a bold new claim: We will also see a sub 18:45 RTA warpless run happen in the 2020s.
