The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

How many teams could beat the 72 Lakers in a 7 game series, or would they beat everyone?

I think the only team that has a chance is the 86 Celtics since they Kevin Mchale and Robert parish can help rebound so the fast break can't begin and with guys like Dennis Johnson who can defend guards really well. Also question, does this team have a better fast break offense then the Showtime Lakers? Let me know your opinions because I'm interested

72 Lakers are Top 10 in the GOAT series but There not beating 16-17 warriors 95-96 bulls 00-01 Lakers 85-86 celtics 86-87 Lakers 2011-2012 Heat or even the 89-90 pistons

I can see them beating the 86 Celts or the Showtime Lakers. Wilt could handle a young Kareem so he def can handle the old goggles one but I think they lose in 7 to the 01 Lakers and lose in 5 to the 95-96 bulls.

@@kenneth7826 The Lakers won the first game. West pulled a hamstring in game 2 and then pulled the other one playing injured in game 3. If he had stayed healthy, the Lakers repeat in my opinion. The Lakers were snake bit with injuries. In the 69 Finals West pulled a hamstring in game 5 and Wilt tore his ACL in game 7. Wilt reinjured his knee and missed most most of the 70 season playing injured in the playoffs. West injured his hand in the 70 finals. In 71 Baylor missed most of the season with an achilles tear and West injured his knee, both missing the playoffs. In the 72 finals Wilt broke his wrist in game 4 but wrapped it took an anti-inflammatory shot and put up 24/29 to win the title. That's the main thing. Wilt won the Assists title that year but could score whenever he wanted to and way faster than the older Wilt. Wilt is always labeled a loser w only 2 rings compared to Russell. But he only lost 13 games in each championship with 2 different teams!

Thanks for featuring! The 71-72 Lakers are the Best Alltime. They were the breakthrough team after being the bridesmaid for so many years to the Celtics. I could feel it that year and kept a scrapbook of clippings of every playoff game that season culminating with their 1st championship. I even recorded the second half of the final game on cassette tape (this was long before VCRs). Still have the scrapbook. You hardly mentioned scrappy 6th man Pat Riley. Only sad thing is that Baylor never won a championship. He was otherworldly in his prime and my favorite Laker.

To me this is the best team of all time. The Lakers suffed numerous injuries through out Wilt's years there. 72 was the year they were most healthy setting still existing records for margin of victory and wins in a row. If the Lakers had stayed healthy they could have easily won 5 championships in a row. Their 69 wins is just as impressive as the Bulls 72 or Warriors 73. They had to play the Bucks with Kareem and Big O 5 times. The 67 Sixers should be in the mix too. They won 68 games despite having to play the Celtics 8 time defending champions 9 times in the regular season and rolled them in 5 games in the playoffs. Wilt was in his prime following up 7 consecutive scoring championships with his best season ever, 24/24/8 on 68% shooting and 9-10 blocks per game. He also had a quadruple double in the playoffs against the Celtics and another against the Warriors in the finals.

BAHAHAHA Wilt had 19.4ppg and 23.2rpg on 60% shooting . . . *in the Finals*. Insane, I love it I think people are going to rank this team a bit low all-time simply because of the way the game and athletes have changed (although for real, people who say "players are better athletes these days" is obviously not thinking of Wilt Chamberlain). And admittedly, part of their success was because they were playing a style of ball a decade ahead of its time There are two schools of thought when it comes to discussing GOATs across history (and the argument between these two schools of thought is often why these debates end with everybody in the bar mad at each other): 1) who would win if they played each other, or 2) who played the best against their peers. I hope that you do a piece on the 1966-1967 Philadelphia 76ers for that team was a younger, more powerful version of the 71-72 Lakers. The 66-67 Sixers sprinted out of the gate at 46-4 and ended the 81 game season with a then NBA record 68-13. The Sixers had 6 players who averaged at least 12 points a game, they had the most intimidating front court (e.g., 300 pound Wilt Chamberlain, 270 pound Luke Jackson, 225 pound Chet Walker) in NBA history, and their roster consisted of 4 HOF's which included Chamberlain, Walker, shooting guard Hal Greer, and small forward Billy Cunningham. Wilt Chamberlain was the named the league MVP, the Sixers were 11-4 in the playoffs, they destroyed the 7 time defending champion Celtics in 5 games, and they closed the show by winning the NBA title over a very talented (e.g., HOF's Nate Thurmond, Rick Barry) San Francisco Warrior team in 6 games. I would also argue that Chamberlain's 1967 playoff run was the greatest in NBA history. In 15 playoff games, Wilt averaged 21.7 points, 29.1 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and (e.g., unoffically) 9.2 blocked shots.

When studying this team, you have to remember the ABA was around and some of the better players, especially the young players, were in the ABA. A great team obviously, and a 33 game win streak is incredible, but remember the Celtics won 68 games the very next season. If those players were in the league both the streak and 69 wins might not happen. That might be the only knock on them for their dominance in this season, the ABA.

The 71/72 Lakers didn't have a 3 point line. Even without it they scored more than 100 points in every game except one. The unsung hero of that team was Happy Hairston. He was Rodman before Rodman. A big strong rebounding machine who could take care of the paint after Wilt. The other thing to remember is Jerry West would have been a lot for Jordan to handle. Michael would have got his points but trying to get away from West would have put stress on the best Bulls team. In addition, both West and Goodrich could light it up. So those who feel the new era Warriors would have won should think twice. Again, West and Goodrich from outside while Wilt dominated the interior. Hairston and McMillian on the wings would have made it tough on any team. Also, in general teams of today are a bit bigger but not by much. Also, those Lakers were in very good shape but didn't have the training of today's NBA. Whether it's bringing the 71/72 Lakers to current training and playing methods or sending the great Bulls, Celtics, Pistons and Warrior teams back to 71/72. They would all have a hard time beating that great Lakers team in a seven game series.

How would that Laker team have dealt with the front line of Bird, Parish, McHale, and a healthy Bill Walton coming off the bench for the 86 Celtics? They also would have had one hell of a time with the Bulls team that won 72 regular season games and went on to win the title. Lastly how would Jerry West or Gail Goodrich have done trying to guard Magic Johnson? The 87 Laker team would have been too much.

I like bringing up this fact when the debate between the Bulls and the Golden State Warriors come up because the Golden State Warriors were not able to achieve the same feat.

That's a really good thought. Definitely their fast break offense would neutralize some of the advantage you had with Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman as wing defenders. On the other side of the ball, Jordan would put up 30+, but duh, he always put up 30+, and having Wilt as a rim protector would definitely help to slow the rest of the Bulls' offense. I do agree with @Alexander Melnikov that, on possessions when the Lakers had to play half-court offense, Wilt would need to dig deep and turn back the clock a little bit to put some points on the board. And he very well could--that's something that all-time greats like him can do

Interesting facts about the '71 Bucks when compared to the '72 Lakers. 1. '72 Lakers have the largest regular season point differential in NBA history at 12.28. The '71 Bucks are #2 at 12.26 2. The '71 Bucks have the largest SRS (which factors in strength of schedule along with actual point differential) at 11.92. The '72 Lakers' SRS is 11.65. 3. The '71 Bucks went 12-2 in the postseason with a point differential of 15.3. The '72 Lakers' went 12-3 with a point differential of 3.2. 4. The '71 Bucks could have easily won 70 games had it mattered to them as they were 65-11 at one point before losing 5 out of their final 6 regular season games, clearly taking their foot off the gas. It was clear they took their foot off the gas because once the postseason got underway they switched it back on again and destroyed the competition. The '72 Lakers are often cited in the conversation for greatest team in NBA history but the '71 Bucks, a team that statistically compares favorably to the '72 Lakers, are seldom mentioned. They probably would be mentioned a lot more if they had reached 70 wins that year, which they easily could have. In a 7 game series between the '71 Bucks and the '72 Lakers, I'd find it difficult to bet against the Bucks. It's true they played each other in '72 and while the Lakers won that series in 6, the Bucks actually outscored the Lakers overall 636 to 622. And keep in mind that was the '72 Bucks, not the '71 Bucks. The Bucks were close but not quite as good in '72 as they were in '71, both statistically and record-wise.

I saw that '72 Laker team play and in my view they are the greatest team ever. The '86 Celtics were awesome too and the Portland Trailblazers played excellent team basketball led by Bill Walton at his peak, etc... But the '72 team was truly dominant and crushed the opposition. At one point, shortly after Baylor retired and players settled into their roles, that team won 33 games in a row which is still a record. West truly had a great year, led the NBA in assists and was a natural floor leader that could pass and score at a high level. Outside of Curry, I don't think we've seen a better shooter at any guard spot. West was also closer to 6'5", not 6'3". Wilt dominated the paint on defense and his rebounding stats and outlet passing skills were ridiculous, that's how good he was. With shoes on (like they measure players today as opposed to barefoot back then) Jim McMillian was a 6'6" SF, was an excellent shooter and filled the lane on break so well. Goodrich was a deadeye from anywhere and was more like Curry's height at 6'2". This team had The Logo and the most dominant center in history in Wilt plus depth and played team basketball and crushed everybody in their way. The '72 lakers are the GOAT. 🐐💪🔥

@jingqi9106 4 года назад
@@ballingliketheraptors7041 One thing that I've heard more than a few players say, including MJ, is that it's hard to compare eras and even positions, and I agree. There have been so many great players like Wilt, Russell, Bird, Kareem, MJ, Lebron, etc... MJ was a great, athletic wing that could score at a high level but then you look at Bird. Bird played a different position, had a different game, and may have the greatest all around game ever. Wilt is probably the most dominant player ever but Kareem had longevity and perhaps the greatest shot in NBA history. Now we're in a 3 point dominant era where guards score a lot and then there's Lebron who is amazing. Bottom line, it's all subjective so take your pick.

Lelouch Vi Britannia they won because Wilt gave in to playing more so on defense and less on offense as he was already doing so but did more so to help the team. The coach convinced a fast pace which Wilt gets the rebound and starts the fast break with an outlet pass. And they didn’t have medical advances like they do today. And guess what, so did the entire league and country of sports in the year 1972. Man where is your head?
