The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!

@gothatway09 You do realize they still won 54-56 games that yr. And declining Moses...he still went to 4 All Star games after that yr,and avg over 20 ppg. The Sixers downfall was that ridiculous trade after the 86 season. Sending Moses to Washington,and trading away the no.1 pick,who turned out to be perennial all star Brad Daugherty. Imagine a frontcourt of Barkley,Moses,and Daugherty. The owner Katz destroyed that team, because they still had a few good years left.

You really said it. Mo was so efficient. I don't what stats were, but he was a great distributor, rarely turned the ball over, great defensive player and when he got the open shot off of a double team it seemed like he was money. Having watched them LIVE in the 1980's , that 83' 76ers Team was unstoppable from start to finish. They BLEW through the regular season, Post Season & NBA Finals like nobody was there ! The aquisition of Moses Malone and 4 of their starting 5 players being named STARTERS for the All-Star Team says it all ! They were probably the single most Dominant Team for 1 entire season in the 1980's just on statistics alone ! Nobody could compete with them in 1983.

Match em up player to player. Jordan & Malone- edge Jordan but not by a ton like people will pretend. Moses was dominant at that time. Doc vs. Pippen is close, but Doc was getting older so a slight edge to Pippen. Hall of Famers and defensive stoppers Bobby Jones & Rodman cancel each other out. Hall of Famer Mo Cheeks is far better than who ever comes next for the Bulls Kerr, Armstrong, Harper, Paxson take your pick. Andrew Toney, who Bird called the most unguardable player he played against is miles above the Bulls center of choice, Cartwright, Longley, Wennington. Then you look at the benches and the 76ers are way ahead. The 76ers dominated one of the best teams ever in the Finals, and dominated a Bucks team that got by one of the other greatest teams ever. The Bulls beat a bunch of patsies during their run.

It's not a bad analogy, but the Malone signing was even bigger. He was the existing reigning MVP, that never ever happens. And KD went to a team that had already won a title whereas Moses went to a team that was constantly getting clipped by Boston. If I recall correctly they did make the finals in 1980 but that was Birds' rookie season, after that for the next couple years I don't believe they made it. Moses put them over top of the Celtics and the Lakers to win their first title or at least their first title since the 60s. Actually no, it was their first title because that team in the sixties was the Warriors.

Marc Ivaroni was the starting PF for that 1983 Sixers team. Bobby Jones was getting stater minutes off the bench though. Ivaroni wasn't irrelevant though. NBA legends like Kevin McHale and James Worthy both are on record saying that Marc was one of the players they hated playing against the most. He was so good at getting under players skins and drawing fouls. He also was pretty athletic and had a decent outside shot. One of the best defensive PFs to never make an All-Defensive team in the 80s.

I'm sad Andrew Toney is soooo overlooked; he was amazing and barring injuries would be up there with many in the HOF! Smooth shooter, solid defender, and good rebounder from the 2. He made the icing on the cake because they couldn't double the dr or moses or he would light them up!

I feel like the Sixers should have kept Moses (he was very consistent until the 1989-1990) and Billy Cunningham as a coach. Even without Dr. J and Bobby Jones due to retirement and Andrew Toney due to injuries, veteran Moses and Cheeks playing with a 87-90 Barkley in Cunningham system could have been a pretty good team and even a dark horse contender in the east.

I was a Dr. J and 76ers fan back then, but they weren't going to do anything by trying to build around Barkley and Moses. The league was in transition. Philly would've probably got into the playoffs, but wouldn't have been a championship contender. They needed to start looking towards the future.

The 1982-83 Sixers started off the season 50-7; in comparison, the 72-10 1995-96 NBA Champion Bulls started 50-6; the Sixers ended their season 15-10 as some injuries and coach Cunningham’s decision to rest some key players before the playoffs kicked in but ultimately they went through the playoffs 12-1 on their way to the championship.

I think Worthy was a rookie that year. His time to shine would come a few years later. Come to think of it, the Lakers won 5 titles that decade with the Finals MVPs being split between 3 players - Magic, Kareem and Worthy. Probably the deepest team I've ever seen considering 3 different players were all good enough that they could take over a series if needed. When the Bulls won 6 titles, wasn't MJ the Finals MVP every time? I can't imagine 3 different players on that squad being able to take over games as needed. Pippen maybe could carry them for a game, but that's it.
@garygoodin40

@@ksmoothe Funny though, the Lakers led every game to start the 4th quarter. They just couldnt hold on. Worthy and Nixon I believe would have been a huge difference. Take nothing away from the Sixers, it was their time but in those seesaw 4th quarters, Worthy healthy, and/or Nixon would've prevented a sweep.

He would go out and bang the shit out of people, get two or three personals, piss off whoever he was guarding, and then Billy C would get up and yell “Bobby!” and off comes his warm-up gear and Bobby Jones would replace Iavaroni. Now that same forward would have the misfortune of being guarded by one the best defensive players ever, while trying to keep up with him on the Sixers relentless fast break.

Yes, as teams are normally formed year to year. So, you look at their best season to see how that season stacks up to other great seasons. The Sixers had a really good run of championship contending teams from Doc's arrival until the mid 80's. Multiple championships would have put them in the best dynasty conversation. Unfortunately, they could only get the one.
