The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

The win totals back then are a little skewed compared to today though due to a number of teams either being expansion teams or not even existing at all at the time. However its still impressive because of how deep some teams were because of that fact

@@kingdeedee there's parity back then 90s and 80s (70s was when there's almost equality among all teams). Almost every team had all-star caliber players. 11 teams went to the finals in the 90s. Re parity, we're almost coming to the same status now but you can't say that in the current decade as a whole.. The 90s where there's the greatest collection of big men. MJ slew the giants. The birth of careers of AI, KG, Tim and Kobe among others.. The Dream Team.

The most defensive era was the second three peat era, not before. That's why Jordan had to develop the fadeaway. I would say from 96'-04 is the most defensive era ever.

Teams are more even split in terms of star power than nowadays. You can tell that from how Jordan only had one finals series that ends in 5 games.

Jordan impacted the defensive side as well. Mark Eaton would've won back-to-back DPOY (1988 & 1989) for a total of 3 in 5 years and tied Dwight Howard for 2nd most all-time behind Dikembe and Ben Wallace. Alvin Robertson would've won a total of 4 steals titles in a 6-year span and 2nd most in history behind Chris Paul with 6.

Imagine if Penny wins one that early and the Nike media pushes him to the moon and he doesn’t get hurt. I know he was good in a small market like Orlando but man he would have been the face of the league. Regardless of Iverson or Kobe coming in cause they were looking for Jordan’s replacement. Penny was easily the guy! People still wear Penny’s is all you need to know about his popularity.

Everytime someone talks about greatest PGs people say Stockton isn't high because Karl Malone helped him get those assists, and vice versa for Malone's points. Nah, Malone is absolutely way better than Charles on every single front except rebounding. Barkley does literally nothing else better, not even close.

Without MJ there will be no NBA fans outside of the USA and so many kids, teenagers and adults wouldn't know about the game and wouldn't start to play it. It's hard to believe for US citizens, but it's true. Thanks to MJ the game became global and millions of people who played and watched most of the time football (soccer) without a doubt after MJ phenomenon they gave basketball a try (myself and people around me included). Great Michael Jordan introduced NBA and basketball to the world.

In the 1991 playoffs, Detroit dropped Boston, the 2-seed in the East who had 56 wins and had Bird, McHale, and Parrish all playing, if not at their peaks, in All-Star form. It's not crazy to imagine a Jordan-less scenario where Philly with prime Barkley takes out the Bad Boys, but I don't think it's the most likely outcome.

@@RodanguirusI'm a die hard pistons man but the pistons were a joke in 1991. After tearing up the league at the start of the season, finished the regular season going 17-19 due to injuries and the Celtics were the 2 seed in the same scenario as the pistons with injuries but a slightly better record to float on. Isaiah Thomas missed a third of that series vs the Celtics and they still won in 6. That's how broken the Celtics were. It showed against Chicago when it was clear that there was no hope (especially with the reffing but notwithstanding they wouldn't have completely overturned the series). Philadelphia on the other hand actually pushed Chicago to a 5th game and had been relatively even with Detroit actually going 5-3 with ex piston Rick mahorn on top of it.

With Jordan winning so many, the AP was looking for reasons NOT to give it to him, leading to other players, like Barkley in '93 getting MVP awards instead. He probably should've had a few more, but the voters were getting Jordan fatigue on behalf of fans outside Chicago.

As much as I love Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, I must admit that the league would have been a bit more interesting if these what-if scenarios had occurred. People would have been talking about how awesome the 90s were because so many different good teams were winning the finals every year. I like all of the NBA Finals winners picks with one exception. I think the Bad Boys would have taken the title in 1991 capping their championship run with a 3-peat. To be honest Jordan was simply too damn good for the NBA. He belonged in another much more difficult league with players of equal skill level. If you look at Jordan's effect on the NBA from this perspective you realize he actually made the game less interesting because the same team won the championship title every time. The only exceptions being the 93-94 and 94-95 seasons. It's criminal that John Stockton and Karl Malone did not win a title. Of all the teams that were denied with Jordan around the Utah Jazz are the most heartbreaking. Stockton and Malone were likely the best dynamic duo the game has ever seen. With that said, I am thankful I was alive to see Jordan dominate the league. He was to basketball what Babe Ruth was to baseball. Greats like these don't come around often and perhaps Jordan will be last. Reading about him in history books is not the same as being alive in the time he lived and played.

Yes and no. Without Jordan the league wouldn't have had the kind of mega star needed to blow up the league internationally. No player that has come after his posses the same athletic ability, nor the playmaking ability to do what he did. I can understand from a basketball purist view point, that Jordan was so good he made it seem like 1 vs 5 and he still comes out on top. But I mean the same thing could have been said about the Celtics in the 60s. Or the Lakers of the 80s. Going to 8 finals in 10 years. The Celtics went to 5 finals in 10 years. And both of these teams were stacked. They always had equal or more amount of talented players than the 1997 Bulls. Which is saying a lot. Since Jordan was able to 3 peat in a tougher conference. While the Lakers failed to do so. With having more talent on their roster and in the weaker conference at the time. And even for the Celtics & Pistons despite having more talent overall failed to do a 3 peat. With the Celtics coming close in 1985. Also great teams like the Bucks & Cavs of the 80s never made it to the finals. All of these teams at one point or another had similar level of talent on their roster as the various Bulls teams of the 90s. Yet failed to do what the Bulls did. It would have been interesting to see MJ play between 1954 to 1967 or 1954 to 1969 instead.

reality says different/. in the current era with all these stat padders, 3 jackers and nobody actually dominating the title or mvp or anything year after year, the ratings are in the toilet compared to the years MJ dominated the league. and the game is reaching far wider today, but less people consensus like the NBA today compared to the 90's.

It's oh-so-speculative. You can make a similar case (minus the international appeal) for Bill Russell, perhaps an even a more dramatic one: If he had not played for the Celtics, the entire history of the league thereafter would have been very different. The Baylor+West Lakers 'would have' gotten a title or three - the Knicks, Bucks and/or Sixers 'would have' gotten one or more themselves...who knows? Jordan transcended sports like no other player before or since - including players in ALL OTHER sports. Not everyone instantly comprehends what you mean when you say "he's the Tom Brady of x", or the "he's the Floyd Mayweather of x" - but _everyone knows what "he's the Michael Jordan of x" means._

I don’t think Jordan alone led to the domination but the combination of terrific support from Pippen, amazing organisation orchestrated by Jerry and of course Phil’s masterful management. The Bulls would probably still win at least a ring and make multiple finals without MJ. 90s NBA was still extremely entertaining despite the domination. Of course, the biggest difference to basketball to me would always be MJ’s off the court activities. His reputation and image propelled basketball beyond what most people can imagine. The West world asides, the rest of the world might not know LeBron, Curry or even Kobe, but they know the name MJ. I’ve always wondered without MJ, would players from Europe ever get the chance to come to the NBA due to their local league being neglected. MJ’s influence created sponsorships and viewerships for basketball in countries that sent their best to the NBA today. His on court impact can be argued to have equals, or even players who surpassed him before and after. However, his impact on basketball entirely has no equals.

@@lc9245 A Jordanless Bulls would not have been able to beat any of the teams from the West that made the finals during those times. In the East,the discussion is interesting. I think the only year they would have any chance would be in 1991. In 1992 the Knicks and Cavs were too strong, in 1993 the Knicks was the best in the East(imho), in 1996 the Magic was too strong, in 97 the Knicks and Heat were very strong and the 1998 Pacers is the best team in franchise history in my opinion. Of course, I'm assuming the Bulls would have the exact same players,playing exactly the same way they did, but minus Jordan. I never saw Pippen as THAT guy and without another All star help other than Pippen, I don't see that Bulls winning a ring. Replace Jordan for a Star however, and that would have been interesting to see. It's just my opinion though,too many variables.

1995 Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and the Rockets. MJs prime is since the 1986-87 season so yes Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas ate during MJs prime. So Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson ate during Jordan's prime.

Pistons age was between 27-29 so I think those are prime years for basketball players (in my opinion even 30 something), bulls have become just better team and they were of course more hungry of winning :) MJ started his second three peat at 33 :) Great video like always :)

We always talk about how Jordan's opponents got old, but we fail to remember what he did and how much older he was, spending 3 years in college before even touching an NBA basketball. He was older than many of the guys he took rings from, or he was just as old. Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler and others were people that were older or as old as Jordan, that he prevented from getting rings.

The only one that I would argue about with is 1992. The Knicks took the Bulls to 7 games in the East semis. Only one of two times during their championship runs that happened. I could see the Knicks in the Finals and possibly even winning.

@@jonnyarnett exactly, a lot of people don't give credit to the Celtics dynasty. I'm not a fan of them but I recognize their importance to the early impact of nba history. Also I forgot to mention maybe you can do one about what if George Mikan and his Minneapolis Lakers dynasty teams did not exist either as they were first ones before Bill Russell's 60s Celtics teams. Although Mikan's teams might be hard to research because there weren't much information about their impact of the game in the 1950s as opposed to the 1960s.

Alright before I watch I'm gonns say that bigs dominant the 90s Barkley, Malone, kemp, shaq, Robinson and Hakeem rack up the mvps and also pippen leads the bulls to several playoffs appearances but but never a conference finals and Allen Iverson revolutionizes the game as a guard leading a team to championship level instead of jordan with respect to isiah Thomas also i don't think shaq leaves the east (magic) because they win a title which costs kobe some of his championships and speaking of kobe he could possibly be an entirely different player with MJs influence After watching i really underestimated dominic wilikins scoring and the sheer amount of hofs jordan denied ssssshhhhheeesh

All before Iverson was Iverson. He's in the 2000 to 2010 conversion. I also clearly remember the perception of Dominiqe Wilkins was he wasn't as efficient as the others guys at the time, he was known to be a little Westbrook ish but averaging 3 assists a game 6.7 rebounds 25 points. He was good. 30% three point line and only taking 2 you'd have to assume those are open looks in most cases. Only high volume guys take bad 3s or at least they look bad at times. But if at the end of the day you're 40% coach can't complain nor other players. However at 30% you'd look bad shooting those tough ones.

So tough to say. From our sample of Pippen without Jordan, he was an all-around monster, but he wasn't suddenly a league leading scorer. Pippen just wasn't as skilled offensively as a handful of guys in the league at that time. Its worth noting that a lot of people don't think Pippen would have been the Scottie Pippen we know without Jordan. Unlike MJ, Pippen wasn't a star when he entered the league, and took some time to develop into one. A lot of people think his intense practice sessions matched up with Jordan helped develop Pippen's game, which kinda makes sense, considering how similar Jordan and Pippen are in terms of play style, physical intensity, defensively, etc. Assuming Pippen is the same player without MJ, I think he's a borderline top 5 player, but isn't winning any championships, unless he got more help than what the Bulls already had. If we're being honest, Pippen's lack of being an elite scorer and closer, kinda makes him an ideal 2nd option rather than a 1st.

Judging Pippen's career in a Jordanless scenario implies that the Pippen we saw while Jordan was out was the outcome of Pippen trying to be the leader of a Chicago Bulls that already had a leader. But that Pippen also was molded to be the 2nd option. What about if he was brought and he developed into an actual number 1 option for the Bulls. A Bulls team that never had a prime Jordan? That's the reason I think this one is so interesting.

I agree with you on all 6 of the Championship decisions. The only one I was iffy on was Pacers vs Jazz, but you definitely make a good case for your decision. The Sonics wouldn't have let Kemp guard Shaq and get into foul trouble. They would have done exactly what Chicago did against Shaq and throw waves of defenders at him. Ervin Johnson was the starting center, and Sam Perkins was first off the bench and got most of the playing time. They also had Frank Brickowski to use up fouls as well. On the other end of the floor, Perkins would have forced Shaq to guard him on the perimeter because he could shoot threes, otherwise Shaq would have risked foul trouble by staying in the paint and trying to guard Kemp. Gary Payton was in his prime and helped hold Jordan to his worst Finals performance. He would have tied Penny in knots.

First I would like to say I love this video. The only disagreement I have with you Jonny is the 1998 Champs. In 98 Indiana was a tough rugged team that won ugly. They wouldn't be able to defeat the Jazz, remember Utah beat both the Shaq & Kobe Lakers and Robinson & Duncan Spurs in that years playoffs. Effectively holding off two future dynasty! The late 90s Jazz had both the talent and depth to be back to back Champs. Mr. Malone has 2 NBA Champions, 3 league MVP's, & 5 Scoring titles and a lot more "Respect" in world without Jordan.

My big disagreement would've come in 1993. I see the Knicks beating the Suns. New York was a much tougher defensive style team which was more important back then. Phoenix was hoping to outscore you and were very limited defensively. Even with the Suns having home court, I still see the Knicks handling "winning time" better.

Watching your video I just realized something: in basically all other sports when watching clips from older days the game from back then looks weak and less athletic and competitive from our point of view as of today. In the NBA, however, the game nowadays looks a lot less athletic and competitive compared to the 80s and 90s, where things were really happening on the court. Today, the players often just run up a bit, maybe make one move and shoot from 3-point range or just make one of these "unstoppable" moves like Harden does (there is a Jimmy video about that) and that's it. I get so much more kick out of watching older matches than newer ones.

That's b/c generally speaking professional basketball in the USA has gone through stages. For example in the late 30s to most of the 40s & most of the 70s pro bball was weak in terms of talent acquisition per team per league. Similarly the 2010s has been a weak era. I mean just look at the lack of genuine prime big men from 2006 to 2016. Genuine 7 footers are rare. Also there have been time of high levels of talent acquisition per team per league for example between 1976 to 1980 was good. 1980 to 1988 was also extremely competitive. Yet the highest level that the nba achieved by per team not total (b/c there are 30 teams now) was between 1954 to 1967. Basically between 8 to 10 teams. So an average of 9 teams in 13 years. One thing Lebron James said was correct many years ago. The NBA if it want to achieve the same level of talent per team like how it was back in the late 80s & early 90s. Then the NBA needs to shrink to 24 teams. Alot of people aren't going to like it but it is what it is.

@Silly81 A dominating team with a dominating player helps the league and you can clearly see who is the dominant player/team and it sparks such conversations. Even still in those finals scenarios in this video, that's even speculation as one of those teams might turn dominant anyways. In my humble opinion Seattle ends up losing to Orlando as they were in the finals before when they lost to Houston. Orlando would be out for blood if given the second chance as that series would be the Sonic's first rodeo. The best are always going to shine no matter what.

Based on history - the 90s was the golden age of basketball and the interest on basketball and the NBA was at its peak... led by MJ really and sure he and the Bulls were dominant but the level of competition was incredibly high that you do not know who will win and for the Bulls to win you need and expect MJ to rise to the occasion... it is like a well crafted story that people can't wait to watch and see... thus it isn't simply about being dominant but the level and quality of opponent. I believe the 80s and 90s were more competitive - just look at 7 HOFs... denied championships. Sadly, today's NBA doesn't exude the same excitement even in an era where the NBA is incredibly easy to access (globally) when compared during the time when MJ was playing. Still now... have a top 10 NBA finals (viewership)... you'll see that MJ's Bulls will have majority of the viewership... just shows the level of excitement for basketball versus today.
