Why wouldn't someone want to be in the Borg? Never lonely again, always having a purpose, a kind of immortality (as long as Borg exist at least), striving for a high level of quality of life. I don't agree that the Federation is an utopia, they are militaristic hierarchical system. They even use punishment (imprisonment) as a deterrent for crimes, whereas the borg makes it impossible to commit a crime because you are part of a collective you feel the pain of the fellow drones you'd commit the crime against and you could just be blocked from doing it anyway. They are also value conservative in many ways. Stuck up and believe they're almost perfect. And base decision based on what feels right for humans (based on the mood and values of some human, probably a white guy in North America, at the time the episode was written) and assume it's best for everyone, which is really the main problem with the borg, their involuntary assimilation of people. They'd probably get people joining them (in less numbers, and it takes more time, but still), by just explaining what they are, looking less scary and offering assimilation to anyone who wants. They do suck surprisingly much at marketing for having absorbed so much culture. The Federation always assume that everyone want to be like them and have freedom and individualism, value risk taking, occasionally threatening and going to war with cultures who don't share their values. Meddlers. I'd rather be assimilated to the borg than live as a federation "citizen".

Some good points. If given the choice the Borg seem to offer lots of benefits. The Federation also does as well, but they are more voluntary. Neither is utopian but both offer a better life depending on your point of view. I don't see the Borg as evil, I believe that they really want what is best for everyone. Although they do it in a British colonial method.
