Are There Any Male Tea Ceremony Masters?

From the images you see of tea ceremonies you might feel that it’s mainly done by women, but it was originally a culture for men. Before the Meiji Restoration (Westernization), women were hardly allowed to be in the tea room, and it was a privilege of men in the high rank. So it might be surprising but even today the head masters of each tea ceremony ryuha (school/style) are actually all men.
Then why are about 90% of trainees today women? There are said to be two main reasons why.
First, the modernization of Japan in the 20th century abolished the strict social class system, helping to allow more people into the culture of tea. Second, tea ceremony began to be taught among women as a way for them to learn manners and etiquette (along with calligraphy, flower arrangements, etc.).
Due to the drastic changes in society, the leaders of the tea ceremony probably had to make some changes in the culture in order to carry on the tradition.
If there’s anything else you’d like to know about the tea ceremony, please let me know in the comments!

i like this, it makes me happy. i always watch a few of your RU-vid-shorts when I go to bed, and it’s become kind of like a small ritual that fits nicely with my ocd, and also educates me for when I travel to Japan for the first time. please keep it up, the pure information that’s showed with a kind smile and love for your own culture truly makes other people happy, and i am glad to have found this channel so I also can enjoy it.

I was privileged to watch a master do his last tea ceremony in the U.S. at Alfred University, in Alfred NY. I do not remeber is name. It was almost 30 yrs ago. It was amazing to watch and he took questions afterwards and allowed everyone to try the tea.

1..What is the difference between hiragana,katagana and kanji 2.. what is manga written in hiragana katagana or kanji 3..what is the order we should learn japnese 4.. can we self learn japnese using books or should we join classes
@abigailher9386
@abigailher9386 Год назад
For number 3: I started learning hiragana first because it’s easier, simpler, and welcoming to learn how to read some words in Japanese. Though, for me, I find katakana and kanji a bit overwhelming/intimidating. Especially kanji, it’s on a while different level. So, hiragana is like the ABCs in Japanese. Then after you learn hiragana you start connecting katakana and kanji together.

3. The classical order is Hiragana, Katakana, words/grammar/Kanji. I started with Hiragana, then Kanjis and Katakana. As a result I can write very well, but struggle in talking somewhat. Start with Kanas, it is impossible to learn proper Japanese without them. Esp. Hiragana need to be present in your mind like the Latin alphabet; it might take a while, but will be rewarding (and required).
@MacPhantom
@MacPhantom Год назад
(last one, I swear) 4. I studied mostly for myself using a proper textbook (I use Minna no Nihongo). Again, it is possible, but for conversation skills you WILL want to join proper courses. I have also attended classes for 1.5 years; wish I could go again (can't at the moment). Really, also join classes if you're serious about it. Oh, and forget Duolingo, it won't work for Japanese (not as main learning material at least).

Tea was introduced as part of the curriculum of secondary schools for girls in the Meiji period. It's not the case today, but it did leave an impression. Still ome schools in Kyoto have it as part of the curriculum (for boys as well as girls).

I remember that Omote was more for men and Urasenke. The dogu (tools) were specific for each school of tea ceremony.
@alestane2
@alestane2 Год назад
There are still lots of men praticing and teaching in Urasenke too (and there are other schools). But as I said in another comment, Urasenke managed to have tea taught in secondary schools for girls in the Meiji era, which gave the school much more reach among women. Some of the dôgu are specific indeed to each school, for instance tea shelves designed by grandmasters of different schools, and the tea procedures themselves are different (although they do share common points, particularly within the Sen schools).
