You know, to be honest, I really envy the guy that has that one fragrance he wears all the time. My good friend, Polo Green, that’s it, and nothing else. And I wish I could be that person. It would be so simple.
But anyone who goes deep down the rabbit hole of niche fragrances knows, that’s just not something we can do. There’s so much out there to experience and that hunt for that really special and unique scent that you just immediately fall in love with - that’s the best part of the whole thing.

Niche fragrance recommendation: Parfums Balint. The perfumery is in a small town in northern Serbia, and was founded by Csaba Balint, who is obsessed with his craft. The ones I’ve tried/have are notable for their clarity and complexity, full without being full-on, balanced without being boring.

Great to have you back Brian! I love fragrance and have a rotation that covers occasion, season, and mood. I am interested in niche fragrances but mostly I have designer fragrances, Dior, Mont Blanc, YSL, Dolce & Gabana and my special occasion evening fragrance Jazz Club. I am curious, which fragrances Robin prefers. I find that I have to love the fragrance but so does my partner.

Love this video and your channel overall! Some menswear forums and channels swear by never wearing suit jackets as a standalone sport coat. I know they are different garments altogether, but I see you doing it and mentioning it all the time, even to the extent that you no longer wear the pants and vest, but you wear the jacket on its own. Can you comment or make a video on some best practices on how to do it well?

I’ve worn just two fragrances for years now: Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche and Nue Co Forest Lungs. Hermes seems to have discontinued this one so I supposed I’m in the market to find my new go-to. Thanks for the vid

Interesting fragrances here Brian ! Admittedly fragrances are so subjective, so it's hard to find The One. (For me it was Jo Malone English Oak & Hazlenut.) And then too, there's always the guy in the office who likes to marinate in his cologne. So, whatever you buy - great - just don't be THAT guy !

Great job Brian! During the pandemic, I dove into two areas of interest via RU-vid: menswear/style (you!) and fragrance. I have since collected about 60 amazing fragrances so it's become a bit of a fun hobby (some might say obsession? lol). Most are niche. I am curious if when you were checking out Milano Fragranze (and yes, you should definitely say it with your best American-Italian accent!), curious if you smelled Panettone? I sampled it recently and it is the most unique/creative scent I've smelled with it's photo-realism to the Italian Christmas-time sweet bread, panettone. It is a true gourmand...so much fun to smell but I just wasn't sure I could pull it off on my skin. Worth checking out.

Always try to pronounce the name in the language it is associated with. Even if you don't get it quite right, it certainly beats the American English version of a different language. I'm American but live in Europe.

Fragrance question: I keep seeing these ads for companies which promise to provide high-quality dupes of big-name fragrances at a fraction of the brand’s price. Are any of these actually any good?

I wouldn't recommend. You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Thanks. Do you have any experience with them personally? The argument that these purveyors put forth is that with the big-name brands, what you’re paying for is mostly branding. This isn’t unreasonable, but that doesn’t mean it’s true. I simply don’t know enough about the manufacture of fragrances to know whether the dupes are of equivalent quality (beyond smelling the same immediately after spraying) or whether the big-name mark-ups are so high that the claimed price reductions are even possible.

Short answer is.... sometimes. There are some impressive Creed Aventus clones. I personally have a clone of D&G The One Luminous Night and it does the job, but if I could pick up the OG for a reasonable price, I would. But some companies do skimp out on the quality ingredients and smell more "chemically" if that makes sense. Its either the initial spray that smells similar but once it dries down it smells differently, or the initial blast smells terrible and the dry down smells on point. As a general "rule" I hear positive things about Club De Nuit though. If you want to try one, thats probably the safer bet. Also keep in mind that some of the price is not only branding, but the cost of research and development of the fragrance itself. Id say your best clones hit the 80 to 90 percent similarity mark compared to the originals.

@@petewisdom1984 Pete, that's a great response - thanks so much. I'll follow up your recommendation for Club De Nuit. Knowing that the good clones are 80-90% similar to the originals, and who makes them well, allows for an informed decision re: cost-benefit. In general, I prefer to pick up originals, and I wish cost weren't a factor in these things, but… well, it's the difference between the print and the painting. Good point also about the R&D. I've seen some niche perfumers at work and it's an astonishing skill; I'm sure that the big brands, whatever people's feelings about glossy corporate entities, have some rare talents working with them too.
