So, I noticed a couple times where you're vibing with the armor a lot, but there's this or that thing that's rubbing you wrong, and you go from what sounds like it's on the edge of "Pretty good" straight to "Could be Worse." Now, Xenk you explain a bit. If you can't really move in it, it needs some fundamental fixes, but why the other one? Not criticism, necessarily, just curious about thought process. Especially since the primary flaw with the first "could be worse" could have been fixed by removing one of the 5 people seemingly designing the armor.

People are pointing out Camilla riding a wyvern as a defence of her armour, but that arguably makes it worse. Her bare thighs are probably being ruined by the scales and she has no defence against arrows
@Heroshand
@Heroshand Год назад
It absolutely makes it worse! She's a flying unit! What about that armor makes sense? The only thing it's got going for it is the fact it's a similar color to her mount, making it harder to distinguish her from a distance.

She's probably using some kind of saddle, but lemme tell you, riding in a saddle without proper equipment is asking for sores. There are character reasons for Camillas armor, though her actual character gets that across well enough. Shame all the fire emblem characters get only one outfit for all occasions (Aside from class promotions, coronations, etc) But while she is in melee she's also on the back of a wyvern. Don't know if it makes it better or worse.
@FFKonoko
@FFKonoko Год назад
@@Agent719 I guess technically that can make the heels/riding a little better. Only a little though. A wyvern seems big enough that a melee axe should be wasteful...a bit of a "drive the tank closer, the commander wants to hit them with his sword from the top" situation.
@rmsgrey
@rmsgrey Год назад
@@FFKonoko It depends whether she's fighting with close support from other units, or operating independently - detached tanks are notoriously vulnerable to people attacking from the side/rear, and having something to deal with attackers coming from everywhere the wyvern itself isn't actively defending seems like a good way to extend your life expectancy...

ah camilla. a character whose introductory animated cutscene I have taken great sadistic pleasure in showing to my unsuspecting sister bc of just how... much it is. the bare thighs are actually even stupider than normal bc this is her armour for riding a flying dragon mount! for some reason, the design team for the series at this point had decided that most female units on horse-/dragonback should not have any inner thigh protection, so you end up with a bunch of characters riding around in underpants and flimsy cloth chaps; as someone who used to do horseriding, it pains me just so so much to look at them.

One of the things about Nausicaa's outfit that you won't recognize without seeing the film (at least the background) is just how much the armor and protective outfits are deliberately designed to evoke the memory of the Giant Warriors that destroyed the old world. There's this chair I used to sit in for schoolwork which had a back made in two chunks, and it would pull my hair out every time I sat there without fail. its weird bc some of the Camilla things you pointed out do get to aspects of her character: She actually uses both magic and the big axe, and wields them from the back of a dragon. So realistically, she's only in melee range long enough to decapitate you on the way by. This also does mean she almost never actually has to fight in the heels. Still impractically high mind you, but at least she's not trying to fight you down on foot in those. This is the only thing close to a win, and it has so many qualifiers that is doesn't really matter. As for the bit in the title: It's hard to tell, and regrettably I double checked her introduction scene to make sure (Camera really makes sure you know the what the character is about. Ugh.), but the chest and undergarment are both fabric that matches the aesthetic of the armored middle and extremities. Not any more practical as armor ofc, but at least its more comfortable ig. And yes, the smile is bc she acts as a weird mix of mother/older sister to the main character. And is a romance option bc "She's not blood related". Thanks Japan. Also the hip flair is almost certainly because she does that hip-sway walk in almost every cutscene that does full animation. I almost think it was accidental that its actually a good, practical thing.

Yeah, pretty much the entirety of Fire Emblem post-Awakening has been... dubious in the character design department. I'd love for Jill to someday look at something pre-Awakening, but I guess I'd have to get a bit more involved if I wanted to make that happen. Camilla's dragon-riding almost gives her a pass on the excessive boobage, but it condemns the exposed thighs. Nothing except an archer is likely to reach her chest but a lot more enemies will be able to reach her thighs and femoral blood vessels. Yikes. I'm pretty sure the second image is from Fire Emblem Heroes. The mobile gacha game which leans into the anime pandering *hard.* Presumably this (plus her initial characterisation in her own game as the maternal love interest, a trope that makes me gag) explains her facial expression.
@researchinbreeder

@@gigabyte2248 I mean I definitely think there's more acceptable designs than your giving credit for post-Awakening. Xander, Leo, Hinoka, Niles, Kaze, and Saizo in Fates (maybe a couple more, but idrc about Fates tbh), about half of the 3 Houses cast, and Xavier, Alfred, Etie, Louis, Lapis, Citrinne, Diamant, Jade, Kagetsu, Zelkov, Fogado, Merrin, Seadall, Lindon, and Saphir. Yes, that's nearly 2/3 of Engage's playable cast. Don't let designs like Hortensia, Céline, and Alear color your impression of the rest of the units. And even then, a good number of units that I left off are fixed by just reclassing them to fix the outfit situation (Panette and Goldmary spring to mind)

@@researchinbreeder Oh, if you wanna go, we can go. Rubric: similar to Jill's, I'm looking for covering the important body parts, while still looking for freedom of movement. Doesn't count if it's not actually armour (NAA), though I will still call it out if it's egregious. Female characters only. I consider the bar to be set by Radiant Dawn: Titania, Astrid and Jill are covered neck-to-toe with something (mostly armour) and still look amazing. *Fates* Corrin (F) - bare feet on the battlefield are a big no-no, even if you are a dragon. Loses points for exposed thighs. A bit form-hugging, but segmentation is nice. Azura - NAA Camilla - already covered, pun intended. Elise - NAA? I can't tell if that's supposed to be a segmented cuirass. If it is, there's no other armour on her and no excuse for those unprotected thighs. Felicia - NAA Hinoka - she's wearing vambraces but not much else. Exposed thighs (again) asking for a femoral blood vessel slicing. Sakura - NAA Anna - NAA Beruka - good. The elbow-hooks on the vambraces are a bit much, though. Charlotte - I hope I don't have to explain why you should just stab her now. Effie - could be worse. Lacking a helmet but, ehh, she has big-ass pauldrons. My biggest criticism is the moulded-on boob plate, plus the lack of segmentation. Flora - NAA Hana - good. A little light on coverage, but the swordfighter class focuses on agility over protection. The chest is covered by metal plate and she might have sarashi wraps around her abdomen, which would be better than nothing. Kagero - NAA, but I can't not mention the comically-sized boobs and extreme cleavage which screams 'just stab me now'. Lilith (humanoid) - NAA Mikoto - NAA? If it is, covering the abdomen and shoulders but not the chest seems like a potentially-fatal oversight. Mozu - NAA Oboro - I'm torn. Better to wear something than nothing... but that mini-cuirass looks to offer little protection for high torso movement restriction. Not even cloth to protect her mid-arms and neck, which seems like a bit of an oversight. Orochi - NAA, but she must be pretty cold. Peri - I had a worrying feeling that MFing Peri might have the best female armour in Fates and I seem to be right. Good torso coverage with good segmentation and good arm coverage. She doesn't even have any exposed skin, but I have to dock points for the pigtails that could be used as handles for grappling her head. Reina - it's hard to tell from her portrait art (which is all I can find), but I think that's plate and scale chest armour and possibly also some spaulders. Pretty good. Rinkah - NAA, though goodness only knows how she has so much defence while wearing so little protection. Setsuna - NAA *Echoes* Mostly NAA, though I see a few bits of metal: Clair - if I'm being nice, NAA. If I'm not, why have you put metal in all the least protective places? Mathilda - all the points that she gained for sensible(ish) greaves are lost with the boob window. Particularly as that metal is pretty close to skin. Delthea - I wanna say NAA but, if that breastplate is metal, it definitely qualifies as the bare minimum. Points docked for bare flesh on the arms and legs, and also for a moulded-style boob plate for an underage character who still presumably has a lot of growing to do. She and Luthier are not wealthy enough to be replacing that one breastplate every year. Mae - similar token effort to Delthea, though at least Mae is a full adult. Points docked for moulded-style boob plate. Palla, Catria and Est - heavily overlapping. I appreciate the slim breastplate that's traditional of pegasus knights, but all 3 have exposed thighs, Catria has exposed shoulders and Est has (seemingly) bare-metal-on-skin spaulders. *Three Houses* So, there's not much point opining on identical school uniforms. So, instead, we're doing post-timeskip outfits only and skipping outfits that are not actually armour. Byleth (F) - hasn't Jill covered Byleth before? Exposed midriff, exposed arms, a cuirass that looks hard to move in and whatever the hell is going on with those tights. Edelgard - hasn't Jill covered Edelgard too? In any case, I think her main outfit is, weirdly, NAA. I have to take a shot at her promoted class' moulded-style boob plate, though. Looks dreadful to move in. Ingrid - I can't find a full-body image right now, but the half-body looks pretty good. Sensible spaulders and a breastplate that looks like it would actually deflect blows away from her heart. Hilda - OK, NAA but I have to take a potshot at that boob window. She's a melee fighter who needs a lot more protection that that. Leonie - again, I'm working off half-body shots but I can see two spaulders and deep cleavage. Not great. Catherine - moulded-style boob plate. Just no. Please? Shamir - one solitary spaulder does not count as armour. *Engage* Alear (F) - NAA, though I have to call out the exposed thighs and stupid-long hair that would be a serious liability in a fight. Ivy - NAA, but possibly the poster child for gratuitous eye candy. As crown princess, she really ought to be wearing more than a single economically-cut dress on the battlefield. Extra points lost for high heels, the pointy things on her shoes and gloves and the lack of support for a bust that definitely needs it. Timerra - very much NAA, but I have to call out the trailing fabric and the stupid ball decorations. They'd probably be a minimal hindrance to movement but they look super-ugly. Lumera - NAA Framme - NAA Céline - NAA, but I have to dock points for whatever the heck is on her upper torso. Somewhere between a wardrobe malfunction in waiting and jailbait. Etie - NAA and, although I fully understand her desire to show off her washboard abs, that should be done away from the battlefield. To wit: her Somniel outfit covers her midriff but her battle outfit exposes it, which is the wrong way round. Chloé - possibly NAA but, as a pegasus knight, I'm going to assume it is. That gives us: bare metal on skin (or close enough), seriously exposed chest and a body-sock garment covering her abdomen that is sheer enough to nonsensically hug her navel and therefore offers zero protection from blades. Jade - very good. Neck-to-toe coverage and that rarest of all accessories... a helmet! Segmentation on the cuirass, pauldrons that are large enough to offer serious protection but loose enough for freedom of movement. My only criticism is the excessively long hair, which is asking for a grappling. Lapis - my girl, you came so close. A breastplate and vambraces that offer a good level of protection while still giving the high mobility typical of a swordfighter. Spaulders are present but are protecting the upper arm, not the more vulnerable shoulder. It's let down by that undergarment, which is seemingly the same kind of sheer body-sock as Chloé is wearing. It appears to be the only thing protecting her abdomen, shoulders and armpits (which could have some serious consequences if stabbed). Citrinne - NAA Yunaka - NAA, though extra points docked for ultra-deep neckline, lack of bust support for a figure that really needs it and the weird waist cutouts. Saphir - pretty good. Although that plate on her abdomen looks like it would create a lot of movement problems. Hortensia - NAA, loses extra points for dressing like a circus clown. I'm a bit too male to wear any of these outfits, but I wouldn't be caught dead in that stupid getup. Rosado - not actually female, but I had to jump in: why have you armoured your limbs and not your torso? Maximum mobility loss while leaving the life-threatening parts unprotected. Goldmary - ...is that a pauldron? A single oversized pauldron on one shoulder? That seems like a great way to give herself even more back problems. I'm going to give a consolation prize for the corsetry on the abdomen, which should offer more protection than simple cloth, then take it away for the exposed chest. Anna - NAA. Points lost when she promotes to the warrior class and is wearing a single sports bra on the body of a pubescent girl. Pass the brain bleach. Merrin - skirts the border (pun intended) of NAA. Little-to-no torso protection, bare flesh on the arms, light upper-arm protection and metal claw-gauntlets. The bare flesh on the arms is particularly bugging me because she wields knives, placing her arms closer to the enemy than normal from the reduced reach. Panette - NAA. OK, the hand wraps were a cool design decision but this outfit offers about as much protection as her defence stat implies. Final verdict: over 4 games, the only outfits I'd consider good enough to wear are the ones on Beruka, Hana, Peri, Reina, Ingrid and Jade. Maybe I've been a bit too harsh, but Radiant Dawn alone can beat that count, and I surprised myself how many not-actually-armour outfits I had to jump in on for a dressing-down (pun intended). I still live in hope that Fire Emblem can reign in the anime horniness and design some good characters again.

@Bluecho4

What I love about the Chubby Dragon (aside from Everything, he is precious and I would die for him) is how it illustrates a point that gets lost on some DMs. Namely that monsters, even if you're using the stat blocks from the Monster Manual, are made to be modified. You don't extract the monster as-is and plop them unceremoniously into an encounter. You embellish them. Use the descriptions and stats as a starting point, a scaffold on which to build your own encounter or your own character. It's not "A Dragon". That's stale. Seen it a million times. It's "A _Chubby_ Dragon". That's new. That's interesting. It lends itself to elaboration by its very nature (you get to think about _why_ the dragon is chonk and how that modifies potential encounters with it). Old & Busted, meet New Hotness. (Not to say a normal dragon is bad. It's a classic. But that also makes it predictable.) Whether you're making an encounter for a supplement or just for your home campaign, Specificity is the name of the game. Append just one meaningful modifier to a stock encounter, and both you and your players are likely to remember it much better. Whether that's a physical description, a motivation, clothing/accoutrements, abilities, or the environment.

The character from The Last Legion is supposed to be from India originally (hence the Katar she carries) but serving as a guard for a Byzantine / Eastern Roman Empire envoy to Rome right at the time it fell to the Goths (iirc AD 400 something). Her armour is supposed to be Byzantine cataphract scale armour and her helmet matched. Iirc from seeing the movie a few years ago, her helmet was pretty much an Eastern-style khula kud (a round pot like a Norman helmet but with a spiky tip and a sliding adjustable nasal bar) with a chainmail combo aventail and visor - basically a mail skirting to cover the entire neck all the way around and the lower face. For a movie helmet, it was actually pretty damn good.

In regards to the Destiny helmet not being breathable, I'm not sure that's an issue, as all the characters have been brought back from the dead. Most people call them zombies, as they are literally dead people/cyborg that have been reanimated by (space) magic. The necromancer, called the Traveler, is presented as a goodie, reanimated the dead and gave them magic abilities to fight the baddies, of which Savathun is a god queen of one of the races of baddies...though I've heard argument that a Lich is closer to what they are as they all have little floating robot phylacteries, called Ghosts, that helps keep them alive, and the only way to truly kill a guardian is to destroy their Ghost. I'm getting off topic. Point being, because they are reanimated dead beings, they likely don't need to breath.

Guaridans do have the same basic biological functions as normal humans - with the obvious exeption being the Exos. There's even lore book entries discussing guardians starving. So, unless they are exos, they do need to breath. There seems to be a general consesus that guardians are sterile, but I'm not sure if this has been confirmed. Also, guardians don't need their ghosts to live. If they lose their ghost, they simply lose their powers and become mortal again.

@@Bird_Dog00 interesting, I didn’t see any of the lore on guardians needing to breath or starve, but I’m not Byf, so could have easily missed something. Also, didn’t mean to imply that they need the ghost to live, just that you can’t kill a guardian that has a living Ghost, as the Ghost will just revive them. The three Guardians shown after Savathûn are the player characters, and are customizable to be masculine or feminine. The left one is the wall, the middle one is the mage, and the right one is the rogue. Their armor can be swapped out, and has a tendency to be made out of ludicrous materials (case in point Young Ahamkara's Spine, which is made of the spine of a shapeshifting monkey's paw wish dragon from space). If you're interested in looking at armor based off of heavy metal armor, then look at titan armor; if you want to see more stealthy (bearing in mind that you can dye any armor a pearlescent pink) armor, then look at hunter armor; and if you want to see a bunch of robes that run the gamut from black leather dusters to floating golden wings, then look at warlock armor. There's honestly too much armor for you to review as the game's been running for ~10 years between Destiny 1 & Destiny 2, but I would love to see what your favorite and least favorite armor sets are.

One thing to note about Camilla is that she is an malic knight. A flying wyvern rider, wielding axes and magic. I think that makes the missing armor on the top section a bit less impractical, as she is going to be above most of her enemies. But still.
@reitheist
@reitheist Год назад
I mean, in game flying units are vulnerable to bows, so I feel that even if she isn't injured in her melee fights a well-aimed arrow to the heart would be all it takes to do Camilla in. Maybe fe flying units would be more resistant to bows if they wore armor that covered their chest and thighs lol
@ariwl1
@ariwl1 Год назад
@@reitheist Flying units in FE are a real trip as flying really doesn't offer much advantage towards direct melee encounters with ground units regardless. A bow and arrow unit may be your kryptonite, but a well-trained unit could also someow down you with a punch to the face. XD

@ryanweible9090 Год назад
@@ariwl1 its positioning, the bows kind of had me spooked too, but once i knew there were no archers, they are very good for surgical strikes on enemy units that can be trouble. despite the Pegasus knights being a little lightly armored looking, they are surprisingly good as ambushers and fast take down units that have almost no terrain limits. a few strong oens and you can blink bosses very quickly

i would suggest, re the Nausicaa flight suit; it's -probably- suitable as light armor (heavy leather jackets and the like); probably wouldn't stop a serious blow, but she -does- do some fighting in it... also it's probably more like "old folks' supeerstitions and well-wishes" as far as the magic goes. aside from that line, there's little if any other mentions of magic in the world, and it's actually a "fallen technology" world. and yea; lmao wtf @ metal[?] bikini. clearly the artist has SEEN armor done decently before, but has never stopped to consider WHY things are the way that they are.

5:24 Okay yes I agree with everything you say about Camilla (I'm not a fan of her design) but while she has the ax, her class actually uses axes AND TOMES so you can use her as a "sexy warlock" if you'd like. Also, she rides a wyvern. So IMAGINE THE CHAFFING!!!
@emberthecatgirl8796
@emberthecatgirl8796 Год назад
For destiny, from left to right it’s a Titan, a Warlock and a Hunter, and that translates roughly to the fighters, the mages and the rangers. However, each class has a dichotomy: Titans straddle the line between offensive ‘zerkers and proper tanks, however they are always prefering close quarters, they also have a mastery of Crowd Control; Warlocks oscilate between Offensive and Utility space magic, but are always complex, they can often use one ability in many ways; and Hunters can be stealthy trappers, flashy marksmen or monk-like melee fighters, but are always evasive, and always offer a simple kit, with it leaving a lot to the user.

5:57 It's not just getting caught in the joints to be worried about with hair like that! I learned from a friend who was a fighter in the SCA that a good solid blow that catches your hair between even a blunt weapon and the armor will damage your hair enough at that point for it to break off the next time you brush it, even if it didn't instantly cut it through.

The context surrounding Camilla actually makes some things worse than even you showed: She’s actually in the wyvern rider class. Basically they fly while the character whacks them. Also her canonical outfit is seen in her base class (the malig knight) which is unique as it’s a wyvern class that allows the user to use magic (so she can blast foes from far away). So imagine all that whilst on a wyvern with some rider gear. As for her character, you were right to spot the maternal look. Being the eldest daughter she’s very doting, but has mumma bear energy which gives her brutish strength (which explains the giant axe, the only thing the context improves). She’s actually a pretty good character but that’s not important rn. Finally, the colour scheme is actually common among the nation she is from. And their overall aesthetic is the best in the game, even if it offers no protection
@rustkarl
@rustkarl Год назад
She’s a psycho who flips between disturbingly sexual maternal figure and brutally possessive yandere at the drop of a hat to the point where I wonder if Severa genuinely sticks around out of fear of being dismembered and kept like a pet if she should leave. The whole Nohrian family are hypocrites with emotional issues. Xander is massive hypocritical tool who doesn’t give a fig about what he’s doing, and he keeps Peri as a retainer. Arguably the only person more volatile and recklessly murderous than Camilla in the cast. Leo is a tryhard with an inferiority complex but there’s not much else to say against him, other than his questionable fashion sense. Elise is painfully naive and frankly her pointless death in Birthright was the only time Fates had some balls. Which only makes Xander’s unquestioning moronic continuation in spite of the fact he just killed his little sister even more headachingly absurd.

I've mentioned this before with Diana of Themyscira's metal crotchpiece, but while chastity belts in museums are mostly either forgeries or torture devices from the Inquisition, they're an actual thing now. Looks like Camilla's crotch armor may have been inspired by these modern artifacts. That being said, I think much of her armor - cuirass, boob plate, panties - looks more like leather with gilded seams. Still, I agree with your overall assessment.

Love this. Love that you hold no punches with critiquing the functionality of the armor. Have you talked about the any of the armor as seen in A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger? It's an early 2000s film. They weren't really going for historical accuracy AT ALL, which I think is the best part. They had an aesthetic and rolled with it. I might just check out all your other tier lists again to doublecheck.

Spot on on all the Destiny 2 stuff. As an aside, it is probably one of the very few games where the developers neither ignore nor fetishise the female form. Female guardians are definitely slighter, have visiblly pronounced hips, and breasts, but since they are wearing pretty heavy armor most of the time, you have to stare a bit before you can differenciate.

I’ve played this game I’ve never finished it but I know Camilla very well. Yes she is a melee fighter and that’s the only part of her characterization that gets emphasis in the storyline but she’s actually a mage knight she uses that ax and dark magic from the back of a dragon.

Another negative point for Camilla, that short cloak/cape that you mentioned seems to be the only covering for her shoulders and neck. If she had metal under it, I'm sure it would be as wildly disproportioned as the rest of the outfit's metal components so I feel safe to say that decapitating is also on the table along with heart stabbing and boob looking 🤪
