Love the video but can’t help but feel like this is the horological equivalent of ripped jeans. You used to rip your jeans by actually going outside, playing, experiencing the youth of life. Now they are just made that way and sold in a store for no deeper purpose than as a fashion statement. Not saying that these pieces aren’t wirhot their charm...but they probably won’t make it on my list of must have watches.

I see more like a bottle of wine. Looks better as they age except this watch has been aged before being sold. I never understand ripped jeans, they just look like they need to be replaced.

Superb point Chad and with an excellent illustration re ripped jeans, I was fascinated by by the opening discussion of true tropical dials but this only went on to make undone's artificial patina seem utterly without merit or value, very poor showing and actually smacked of an advertising feature rather than a true review.

I'm not a big fan of the faux patina but I can understand why someone would be. Have you checked out their website? The customizing element is actually quite cool. I like divers and I'm impressed by how many options you have. You can pretty easily design yourself a watch that is appealing and you won't be very likely to bump into anyone wearing one that's identical. If you haven't checked it out I think it's worth a look.

Thank you TGV. After 10years of stellar service, my Sekonda One (don't laugh) finally gave up. Love the look of the Omega Seamaster 300 165.024 but this is far beyond my means. After watching this video though, I decided to take a look at the Undone Basecamp range. Loved my old Vostok Automatic (pre-Sekonda), so using the Seiko NH35 movement, I'm looking forward to how the Custom Basecamp fares. Great insights on your channel. Awesome intro!!! Love it. Don't know how you keep outdoing yourself, but you do! Bellissimo. A little off-topic, but where do you recommend I get a leather strap for my new (used) Rolex Explorer 39mm, 20mm lug width? Since you first purchased your Explorer, I quickly fell in love it, soon there after it became my grail, and it's finally arriving tomorrow!! Any advice? I'd like to get two worn leather straps -- one grayish black and one brown. Other than that I'm open! Thanks for all you do TGV!

Another outstanding review T. I originally had reservations about a forced-patina-effect dial but after watching the scenes on how it is produced I have come to develop an appreciation for the process. I have been looking for a brown dial piece for a while and this might just be the ticket. I agree with you and that the price level is right for a piece like this. Thank you for the exposure to a maker that is well worth considering and would’ve unlikely have run into on my own. -Diego

the painted indeces are pretty lame. but for the price point the customization - such as your logo on back or a name on the dial - meant something had to give. these are things people see which makes them ignore other items which truly speak of quality. what is better, your painted name or applied aluminum indeces on a brushed dial? maybe another 20 or 30 bucks for applied indices would matter to some, such as yours truly. maybe another 20 for a watch you can wear while rinsing out your coffee cup without ruining it. maybe. dan henry has better mecha-quartz watches with better dials, water resistance, and vintage style. and when you flip them over, even more style. all for less than an undone without your name or logo on it and crappy painted indices. TGV is a learned and incredibly creative dude but he gets carried away sometimes with his newest toy. which is why he's great, ironically.

Their white dial Chrono reminds me very much of the Sinn 910 SRS Flyback. Someday, when I've amassed enough time and wealth, I'd love to attend a reputable school of horology and dabble in making some of my own pieces. Though I have no aptitude for design, a couple of my brothers (an architect and an engineer) have exquisite design influence and execution. I'm sure we can come up with something. Add to that another brother that is a CNC machinist and I think we could come up with some truly unique offerings, even if they are just a few limited runs for our own enjoyment. Your videos have done well to pour a catalyst upon my existing enthusiasm for horology. I hadn't considered getting into collecting until you convinced me that it doesn't need to be a lockbox full of Rolex, Patek, and the like. Simply that the pieces need to be enjoyed. I hope you realize the positive effect you have on an industry and a tradition that needed some real-world love. Health and well-wishes, as always, my friend. Have a great week!

I think a better alternative, if not going for the aged look which I’m not keen on, is the Zodiac GRANDRALLY. For I think around the same price you get sapphire glass. It too is quartz but that is what, I’m looking for as a beater (not as it will take any real beating :) would love to see you do a review of the Zodiac, before I take the plunge, it looks very cool. I have their Killy, which I actually got back during their kickstarter campaign. Have pondered adding the "Speedy" and is fond of the Speedmaster look, which is why this Tropical line immediately caught my eye, but, while I like the meca-quartz movement and love the look, I still find it's price kind of high considering I have two similar watches already (also have a Strela "Cosmoswatch") and would just be gaining a steel bezel. That being said, I still have it on my list and may add one after a few more unique picks that I have on my radar.

Hmmm, normally I would agree but making this all possible entirely in-house in one of the most expensive cites in the world is truly remarkable. I have to respect them, especially when you consider the cost of the machines alone, rent, staff, marketing, QC, cost of operation, material, as well as all the legal, logistical, tax, shipping, upkeep fees,, and god forbid a profit for their work. Interesting video TGV. I do get the feeling though that the target audience for these watches wouldn't know what a tropical dial is. I think undone are sitting on the border between a next step fashion watch and a beginner enthusiast. They do look nice but wouldn't hold my attention for long I feel. The key to making the crossover I feel would be a automatic or manual wind movement but this then would discourage the fashion watch buyer who dosnt care less about the movement. Great video as always.

tgv, I'm a bit confused as to what a fly back constitutes? I always thought it was when the reset button, resets it but the moment you release, it starts again. Is this feature something else?

It simply is for ease of use, as in to save time if you need to record things quick and with more precision and not having to press stop, then reset. It was developed with mechanical movements first and was more complicated then a normal chronograph. I hope that makes sense. Thank you, Best regards, TGV

What struck me most, was the display back for an undecorated, mainly quartz movement. It just screams "honesty" and Undone deserves respect for that. It reminds me of the sincere and honest TGV, which is what "sold" me on subscribing to The Urban Gentry channel from day one. Good stuff, Undone & TGV!

Thanks for the review Urban Gentry. Ordered one in Sahara with the stepped bezel in SS. It will replace my Timex at work (I'm a machinist). No way in heck I'm wearing my '67 Speedmaster Pro (145.012) to work. At a cost less than a Hamilton Khaki, I agree it's an excellent value. I'm a little concerned the Sahara is going to be too much patina for me. We'll see how I like it when it comes, but at the price point, it will be hard to complain too much.

Over fifteen years ago I bought a pre-owned Vostok Amphibia for forty bucks. It was reasonably accurate, but the acrylic crystal was heavily scuffed and the bezel was in poor condition. The cost of replacements was less than twenty dollars. The painted dial has developed a fine craquelure and the lume has deteriorated a bit.....I like it. It's authentic.

Another excellent video TGV. I am extremely torn between these Undone chronos, the Dan Henry GT 38mm, or a Seagull 1963 38mm panda. They all seem to have their benefits, but I'm definitely leaning towards the sub-40mm chronographs.

Love your work TGV, and am glad to see more independent watch brands on the channel! However, I can't help but miss the myriad of Seikos and other vintage watches (Tudor Sub 36mm review comes to mind) as opposed to the sponsored videos featuring quartz watches from Undone, Dan Henry and the like. Thank you Joshua, As I am sure you can understand I will always try to cover all price ranges and brands. As for Seiko and vintage watches, they will always be a reoccurring topics (as you can see), so fear not! Did you see the Tudor 36mm review? I compared it to my ceramic sub to make things more interesting. With regards to the DH video, if they decided to do sponsorships on other channels/blogs/publications, that is not my concern, but I personally will always make videos about them and any brand I am interested for free because I love what they do and I feel they bring value to the watch enthusiast. And yes, it is a ton of work but I am happy to do it because this is my greatest hobby, even if it is like a part time job these days! Onwards and upwards. Best regards, TGV

Nice review. I had looked at Undone's website, and wondered about the Tropical series. I didn't know that it was supposed to be faux patina watches. I'm not too enamored with the Undone watches, which is just my taste. But I do like bespoke watches. Check out Revolo. They do a good job, and have automatic movements. No, I am not affiliated with them, I just enjoy their watches.

I saw so many videos popping up for this watch and somehow It just does not interest me at all. Quartz just does not do it for me. Rather have a mechanical Poljot Chronograph for that price. I wish them well for the future.

@@theurbangentry I agree I do think I would love to see a 39mm Diver watch from them. I too have smaller wrist size so normally gravitate to smaller sizes, and although I tend not to be a "modder" of watches (with the exception of strap changes), I do think the concept of customizing a watch sits best with a diver watch. I think that definitely would go down well with the watch community 👍

PS I saw for the first time up close and personal an Omega Seamaster. It was a 2016 007 edition. All I can say is I understand your desire for the Seamaster. Amazing 😍. 🤔 There was one thing I was a bit curious about. I already know how you feel about fashion watches but would you consider doing a review of higher end fashion watches like Gucci or Versace chronographs?

i noticed that you had the sweep second hand always running. is that the way you wear the watch?? i have a Seiko that has a second counter, but i never run the chronograph and have the big sweep second hand run...................should i? ( i like "your" watch. thanks for sharing)

Foe patina has been done by the Omega trilogy, I like the speedmaster looks of these watches irrespective of the tropicalization process

Man, five years on and The Urban Gentry still is the OG of what’s what. After my Tudor Bronze black bay was lost….. i know I know…. Anyway, I came across the Undone bronze GMT. While not the same prestige, it certainly captures 97% of the Tudor. I hope this doesn’t come across as too negative on the Tudor side. It’s just that undone does a great job capturing the spirit of its older brother.

I may be mistaken, but I think that this Undone watch uses the same "mechanical quartz" the new Dan Henry you reviewed recently. They just removed the seconds wheel in order to move the date at the bottom (instead between 4 and 5). That said, which watch is better quality given the substantial price difference?

You are spot on. The difference is in the manufacturing. Undone have their own facilities and are entirely in-house as you see in the video thus the slight price difference. Personally I think the quality is about the same, but due to the DH being smaller (period correct size) it feels higher quality for some reason. But that is just IMO, you could feel differently. I generally like the style of the watch, but it appears to lack a continuously running seconds hand. The seconds hand is arguably the most important feature of a watch - it lets you know if the watch has stopped running for some reason. No running seconds hand would be a deal killer for me.

You have a great channel and I enjoy watching your videos from time to time. Now, without passion or prejudice, I have to be honest with you, watches larger than 40mm in diameter look disproportionate on your wrist and the problem gets much worse when you wear them in NATO straps. Your sweet spot seems to be at 37-38mm watches. In many ways you're lucky, take advantage of it! Best regards.
