Dr. Jawad discusses -- reasons why YOU may be deficient in Norepinephrine and what you can do about it? Dopamine - Norepinephrine - Epinephrine are also known as catecholamines.
Norepinephrine functions as a neurotransmitter and hormone that regulates the “fight or flight” response and elevates blood pressure and heart rate, stimulates wakefulness, and reduces digestive activity.
Norepinephrine is an excitatory neurotransmitter.
Neurotransmitters are divided into two basic categories:
- Excitatory neurotransmitters stimulate the brain and body.
- Inhibitory neurotransmitters calm the brain and body.
Just as levels of individual neurotransmitters are important in maintaining optimum health, so is the proper balance between your excitatory and inhibitory systems.
Norepinephrine is synthesized from dopamine by means of the enzyme dopamine beta-hydroxylase, with oxygen, copper, and vitamin C as co-factors. Dopamine is synthesized in the cytoplasm, but norepinephrine is synthesized in the neurotransmitter storage vesicles. Cells that use norepinephrine for formation of epinephrine use SAMe as a methyl group donor.
Norepinephrine acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter and modulates neuron voltage potentials to favor glutamate activity and neurotransmitter firing.
Norepinephrine functions both as a neurotransmitter and a hormone, participating in the body’s fight or flight response. Norepinephrine increases alertness, focuses attention, fine-tunes vigilance, increases blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose, reduces digestive activity, pain and sleep, prevents bladder emptying, and regulates body temperature. The adrenal gland produces approximately 20% of norepinephrine with 80% produced by the sympathetic nerve fibers. Research shows that urinary norepinephrine is reduced in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
Clinically, low norepinephrine is implicated in anorexia, attention impairment, depression, fatigue, hypotension, lack of motivation, lethargy, low mood, memory issues, slow pulse rate, and weight issues.

keto diet has always given me more energy while eating sugar tends to make me more tired and lethargic. Im considering taking an SNRI but want to get back on keto to see if that really helps me. Recently Ive been taking Tramadol since I had surgery and that helped my depression and energy tremendously. But now no longer prescribing it so may get on an SNRI. I really dont want to have to take it so looking for alternatives. Ive taken an n acetyl l tyrosine supplement for years and seems to help, but have to take it with sugar to increase insulin to create that transporter, but not ideal to do if on keto. I think sugar releases more tryptophan to the brain, blocking the tyrosine. would explain why keto is so beneficial to me.

Does having high HVA/MVA ratio a permanent condition or it can be fixed with what you just said? Especially if I was caused by c diff and 4 cresol Thank you
@thejdocrealminute4648

An elevated ratio indicates a decreased conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine by the enzyme dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH), which is a copper-dependent enzyme. This can happen in: A rare genetic disorder called dopamine beta-hydroxylase deficiency What does the research tell you?

Hi, I have a 9mm Mass on my left adrenal. I'm 57 years old and have had hypertension since I was 17 years old, MASSIVE anxiety for 40 years. I just had a fractured Cathecolamines 24 hour urines. - My CALCULATED TOTAL (EPI + NOREPI) 18 mcg/24 h 26 - 121 mcg/24 h L Also my DOPAMINE 24HR (U) 45 mcg/24 h 52 - 480 mcg/24 h L All are low. All I do is get stereo typed and I am disgusted. What medical underlying condition can cause this. I also had a microadenoma with prior bleeding many years ago that was mentioned in a MRI finding. Are they connected? The doctor is making me feel like i am nuts when I have had petite seizures in my teens and hot flashes for 40 years. ( im 57 now ) I can go on and on. . I have been diagnosed as a diabetic 3 times and all 3 times I was promptly taken insulin and many other Diabetes meds from Neuroendocronologist. All said? What the hell are you doing on Diabetes meds. -I was on a MAO inhibitor in my 20's and it almost killed me due to a hypertensive crisis. It seems they all want to blame anxiety. Their wrong. .I was told my case is very complicated but have lost face in medicine in general. No one takes me serious it seems like. There is def a mass their and I just got my Cathecolamine 24 Hour Fractured back and all say Abnormal. I saw the results before the dr did. This is a local dr's office and not a Endocrine dr.
