Are You Worried. The Grass Cutting Season Is Coming To An End. UK Self Employed Gardener. 

For a good few years now, I'm more than happy to stop grass cutting. I honestly get sick of it and would much rather be tidying borders, hedges, autumn pruning etc. One thing I love to do through late autumn and winter is clear a border then collect the leaves, mulch them and blow them onto the border. Looks lovely and feeds the soil.

The grass has been a nightmare this year, by the time you've cut its already grown back. Glad its finishing now! Have a good weekend

I love my 3 months ofg. Feet up, no 5.30 starts, crap day time tv, holiday in the sun without worrying your missing out on the grass growing. No nagging customers.. Ahh bliss

Give it a month off the lawns and onto the leaves and hedges and we'll be wishing we were back on the lawns🤣 I'm hoping for 3 months of snow to have a proper break this winter🤔😅

I’ve got a heavy workload again up until the start of December mainly hedge cutting. Then I’m looking forward to a few months off! But what’s alarming me is how quickly time is flying by! The seasons are shooting by & turning into years so quickly! Year 8 for me next year. I’m convinced time speeds up as you get older! And damn I’m getting old now!

All depending on how quickly I pass my driving test hopefully I'll be started by this season. Ive been binge watching yourself and a few other gardening channels to help with things such as dealing with bad customers etc. I'll be starting off with mow blow and goes up until winter. Ill be working most winters. I'm also looking at pressure washing driveways etc aswell. It sounds amazing being able to decide whether you work the winter or relax. I love my pike fishing so the winter days off will be happily welcomed. Can picture sitting for a few days on the bank 💷🎣

Hi Rob. I was always relieved once the autumn leaves had finished because it meant I could relax a bit after a hectic season. I used to dread summer as there was little time to sit down. My holidays were always from November to February.

Always quite busy up to Christmas after grass cutting, then I don't want anything to do with gardens until March as I'm sick of it. Years ago I used to work through January and February but hated it so now I make sure I make enough money the rest of the year and enjoy some time to myself after Christmas.

I'll be very pleased to stop for three months. Slightly worried as I spent most of my winter savings on a deposit for a bigger van. I've been swamped with work so plan to continue rejecting all enquiries outside my little work area/town of choice. I'm not wasting fuel and driving time next year. Also I don't want any new customers with problematic parking.

Finally I see a gardener that is smiling with his eyes wehayyyyy. This man has got it and the bit about asking the dog will we go for a walk brilliant. Joints and back ache but the man is happy 😊😊😊😊

A great video thanks. I look forward to the winter being hopefully slightly easier. Most of our mowing jobs still have a monthly tidy visit during the winter. All the other stuff I do always seems to fill any gaps.

I’ve been gardening in sunny Suffolk on the east coast for the past 7 years and never ever worry about the winter , yes it slows down somewhat but that’s why I work harder in the summer then the winter work just tops up the coffers . Love your videos and enjoy watching watching . I always tell every gardener I meet who moans , there’s plenty of work out there if you want it ! Unlike us there’s plenty who moan but don’t want to put the graft in . Plenty of money to be made if willing to put a decent shift in 👍👍😁

Hi Rob, right now I’d love to be mowing lawns. Fair enough I’ve only just started my business and it was a massive gamble, but I’ve been surprised at how much work I’ve got and I think it’s been a good lesson. I’ve cut some big hedges, cleared Virginia creeper, tidied a couple of gardens for winter, I’ve even picked up some jet washing as well as get some maintenance jobs which I hope I’ll pick up again next year. So in short, I’m looking forward to mowing more lawns next year, but right now there’s still plenty of work to do it’s just really varied, which for me has been a great learning curve.

We never turn down grass cutting jobs down Rob. Simply because you lose some thought the year & you chase some who becomes a pain in the ass. We have loads off hedges to take us in to January/ February. Then has you said 1st week in March all kicks off again

Great Vids Rob, a question to someone with your experience, to someone who is going to make the jump to becoming a gardener. When it comes to the main 4 things, mowers/strimmer/hedge/blowers, do you buy the best you can afford, like a Honda izy for example when it comes to mowers or do you start off cheaper but with more tricks like a cobra or similar sub £300 price bracket. Lastly if you go second hand is it a false economy as you’ll be replacing sooner than more expensive new? Would make for a good video topic

I am planning to try cut upto the first weeks in November. And my costumers with gardens cutting back shrubs hedges and leaves this year i told them i will come until everything done unlike me spending the full day at each garden doing everything. I feel that will get me upto December and keep the costumers happy cos they are not paying one big bill for one full day

As a fellow gardener, i love your videos and have learnt so much from them. I get the 60/40 split, but should you include in that an element for replacing any machines? If you're thinking of upgrading to electric, then as you mentioned, batteries could cost you £3k alone. So, unless your earming pots of money, then would you think having a split to reflect kit replacement is worth doing? Just a thought.

I look forward to being semi retired over winter but the last few years I've been just as busy as i am in the summer 🙈

Interesting to hear about the 60/40 split in the pound, I might be needing some more advice though as I got told at work this week there’s a strong possibility that I’m going to be redundant come the end of the year 😬, always enjoyed gardening so thinking if it happens I might try a mowing business. Would u say go battery or petrol (think I’d rather petrol) and do u know of any courses/qualifications that might help me, any advice from anyone would be much appreciated, I’m in the south east, thanks
