This video explains the AFOQT scoring structure in-depth and looks at what may be considered competitive scores for the board when applying to OTS. This video is part of my Air Force Commissioning series where I talk through things you need to consider prior to applying all the way to graduating OTS and beyond.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to give some motivation to you all. I took the AFOQT in January 2022 and failed (horribly to the say the least). I studied my butt off and retook it a few weeks ago July 2022 and passed with a score of Pilot: 96 Verbal: 44 Quantitative: 31. Keep your head up and you can do this👍🏼 I’ll see you all on the flight line one day.

What are some pointers you have for others who want to become pilots?

@@teandrabyrd4042 hey! I’m sorry I am just seeing this now. I did end up getting a pilot slot. My biggest tip would be to reach out for help. Do not be afraid to get a tutor, I had to get a math tutor. If you are also struggling on the verbal section like me, I highly suggest subscribing to “Principia Tutoring and Consultants” on RU-vid. They have a lot of tips and examples of how to do better on verbal analogies, word knowledge, and reading comprehension. It is not specifically for the afoqt, but if I didn’t learn the things they taught me I don’t know if I would have passed. My second tip would be to constantly give yourself timed practice tests (but to not be looking at your stop watch). The first time I took my test the proctor wouldn’t tell me how much time I had left per section. When I would practice at home I would have my stop watch next to me to see how much time I had left. It made a huge difference come test day. Remember, if it were easy everyone would do it. You got this. 🤙🏼

Hey man, congrats! Not only for the test score but the pilot slot as well! My first go-around I struggled on the Math Knowledge section. Any tips for studying for this particular section? It was definitely my weakest subject and I’ve been using Khan Academy, which seems to be helping. Planning to retake the test mid December 2022

@@mistamarktv you’re gonna crush it your second time, you got this. Khan academy was something I used a lot, also get some study guides if you don’t have them already (I recommend the Barron’s and trivium study guides). They seemed to be the most equivalent to the real test.

UPDATE: I have taken the afoqt twice. Did good enough but no competitive scores first time. Took it 2nd time and did significantly better. Scores included below: 1st time: Pilot CSO ABM AA. V. Q. PCSM: 43 34. 40. 34. 20. 27. 20 2nd time: Pilot CSO ABM AA. V. Q. PCSM : 95 98. 93. 91. 27. 50. 20 In short I think I have a better chance now. And this video helped me knowing what to focus on. Thank you very much!

Hey man, thanks for sharing the content! It’s been very insightful as I get back into applying for a commission. I’ve already taken the AFOQT once last summer. When I was doing my research then, it was the most recent score that was taken into consideration if you took it more than once. Is super scoring new?
@eliasbarry
@eliasbarry 2 года назад
Yeah, it just changed in March of 2021. At least that’s when I think it changed. It may have changed earlier but that’s when the memo came out in AFMAN 36-2664 that changed A2.7 “Longevity of Scores”

For any officer candidates or cadets wondering about your chances getting a Rated slot (pilot, cso, rpa, abm), I look up “AFROTC rated board results”. There will be power points from different years with the stats on how many slots there were. As a disclaimer, The slot amounts are different from year to year

I don't remember my scores when I took the AFOQT back in the early 1990's when I was ROTC Air Force at the University of Delaware. I just know that my score was high enough for the job I wanted which today is called Cyber Warfare Officer.

Just curious what your vision is without glasses? With you being an instructor pilot and all. I know the minimums are like 20/70 distant vision correctable to 20/20.

With the 15 verb & 10 Quant, is that out of the questions you take in the sub sections?

Thanks for this, Elias. I am going to be taking mine soon... Maybe some of you guys here would know, is there any chance in hell to get an age waiver for CSO for someone about to turn 36? Any chance in hell? Even if I aced everything?

I’m sorry if this is dumb but if i get a 20 on quantative does that mean i only got 20 questions right for that section

For Pilot applicants, do you really only need to focus on the 4 sub tests that compose your score? I hate to say “ignore” the rest, but pretty much do that?
@TheComedyHistorian

If you pass those sections then yes. As long as you pass Verbal and Quantitative that’s all you need.

As an active duty member can you apply for a rated and a non rated position at the same time? Thanks!
@had1223
@had1223 9 месяцев назад
Boards consist of either Rated or non-rated respectively. So you have to apply to one at a time. And there is a 6 month wait after each board if not picked up for the one you applied. However you can apply to air force rated board and also apply to a space force board within that period because they do not have a regulation impeding you from doing so.

15 on verbal and 10 quantitative minimum scores out of how many? Is it 10/15 out of 100 or 25? I’ve been very confused about this point and can’t seem to find it.
@nkgreenday
@nkgreenday Год назад
So the scores are percentiles- If you are in the 99th percentile, that means you scored better than 99% of people who took that test that year. If you score in the 15th percentile, then you’re only better than 15% of people. In other words 85% of people scored better than you. These are separate scores

When should I start to study and does rotc teach you about what will be on this test? And could I start studying in my freshman year?
@had1223
@had1223 9 месяцев назад
Start studying now. Up until you take it. Focus on timing yourself as this exam is more about time management than knowing the material. That said, do become competent in your math, reading and specific material. Leaving questions unanswered can hurt your score but answering them even if you don't will not.

Do you know what job opportunities non-tech majors who become CSOs may have after retirement in the civilian world?
@eliasbarry
@eliasbarry 2 года назад
Not being a CSO, I won’t speak authoritatively to this, but if you make it to retirement, you’re going to have tons leadership skills that would be a great asset to almost any company. While I don’t know any direct correlation to civilian jobs from CSO, don’t forget that you can always work as an instructor on the civilian side. You would also be a great asset to contractors who make or engineer things specifically for CSOs in the USAF.
