@tree to p I and my family were lucky enough to see Aretha's Christmas Concert in Detroit in 1989. I can't believe sometimes it's been that long ago now.
In her best time Whitney Houston was called "the voice" and she had such a powerful deepness... will never forget her. I think she and Aretha are on the same top level.

Amen! That's what a lot of people don't seem to understand. Aretha had all the gifts a singer could ever want.. range, power, agility, tone, etc., but more than that, you have to be able to emote. That's the main ingredient a lot of singers miss, particularly young singers. They think it's about how loud, how high, and how many notes you can sing.

Nobody has matched her quality of voice ,range and depht.There are wonderful singers around but no one else I've heard has all of these qualities together. NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The world is a more beautiful place because there is Aretha Franklin!!!
thank god Aretha exists, she made the world much nicer place with her spectacular musicality. there will most probably never ever be anyone like her again
They had too many great Queens, they all different, but this Queen here, I can put my finger on it ,a class by her self. Multi-Talent, sang, write, and make that piano sang, and can dress,etc, etc.

I'll tell you what it is it's that tone...that gospel tone incorporated into her R&B & Soul..she can't help it...its apart of her roots and dna...but as you know tone is also like someone's speaking voice....when you hear it you automatically know from whence it came... the uniqueness can never be 100% duplicated by any other...her singing tone is so clear, rich and distinct... not to mention her interpretation is just on a whole other level...her attire, hair, stance and expression is so captivating when she performs that it simply adds to the element of a professional performer and draws you in deeper... even while singing Soul she exudes religious undertones that tends to move you in a certain unexplainable direction... almost as if you're contemplating dancing or catching the Holy Ghost ..lol....which is why she was successful in both and can't be denied her props in either.. moving on to her style of dress...everything this magnificent Queen wore in the late 60s and 70s can be worn today...from the medium and short afro, the braids, the pixie cut, the head wraps, the hip huggers, the soft silk African and Arabian gear with the hoodies, the gowns, the accessories and even her makeup...she said herself that she didn't retain a stylist.. unbelievable!!!..back to her singing... I just witnessed Patti LaBelle declare Aretha Franklin the best singer of all time!!!!...I concur!!!

@@sweetssweeter2734 No one knows Lulu in the States because she didn't get the songs or promotion in the States that other British artists got that's why. Aretha wouldn't even know this song if it wasn't for the Scottish writer.
I have just witnessed the voiced of Aretha Franklin singing Oh Me Oh My I'm A Fool For You Baby. on this here video; Well I heard her sing this song many times before and loved it, but to see a young Aretha belt it out the way she did is just devine. I feel blessed to have lived in the Queens Era. Thank you, God big time.
So hard to say what dong is my favorite when Aretha is hands down my favorite singer but this is no doubt maybe in my top 10. Lyrics ridiculous, "we'll blow a Genie from a cigarette, and then take a magic carpet ride. And we'll tell our ol smokey friend, hey don't you forget, cause you've got to keep us side by side...."
Aretha moves me every time. This is the BEST version of this song I have ever heard, and I've heard a lot! Nobody can top her-nobody. Even with the poor quality of the video, Aretha shines. Thank you so much for this fabulous post.
This has to be the finest singer to have ever graced the earth. The grace and power this woman packed even close to her deathbed in that voice has always astounded me.
Find a more moving voice among today’s vocalist at her comparative age and at her best... To be able to bring such raw emotion. She was the musical symbol of a generation and a culture. To be fair there is only one Aretha and there won’t be another. But I’m hopeful there’s a little girl listening to Aretha right now. I have hope...

Jimmy Doris wrote it. My favorite Aretha song. Lovely live version. Since Jim was in the "music industry," not just a songwriter, he committed suicide in the '80s. A lot of songs are soulful but (like I'm in too) the music companies - well, not all - are evil. Pray for Jim in heaven.
