The most interesting part of this series for me was how the guide would say that he himself was shocked by some of the things he saw, as a citizen of Mozambique himself. I would have loved if there was an episode devoted to exploring the lives of the middle class (?) in Mozambique. Most foreigners are aware that there is a lot of poverty in Africa. But seeing a native African talk about living in "a bubble" where he felt removed from the poverty he saw in his own country really makes me curious about the side of Mozambique that he comes from.
@knowz2367
@knowz2367 10 месяцев назад
As an African I will tell you that most Africans don't live in poverty. There is a middle class but westerners love to see poor Africans living in slums. I used to get angry myself seeing this part of Africa I know nothing about. However, I understand that people like Nick are looking for donations for their charity organisations. So poverty porn is a business for them. If you want to see a different side of Africa watch African RU-vidrs such as Wode Maya, Taino, African tigress, and Miss Trudy just to mention a few.
@chrisbrown-jw4ce
@chrisbrown-jw4ce 6 месяцев назад
I dont think the middle class is very surprising and it is still probably far below what westerners would describe as middle class you notice he speaks good english this is likely an advantage may mean he can get a higher paying job, he sounds educated and is in good health, I think the inclusion of the world bubble was more for the benefit of nicks channel and the viewing audience I am sure growing up in that country he must have had some idea of what it means to be poor.

it is a bit of an eye opener, I have recently travelled overseas to a couple of places including Laos, and really as a western traveller its still a noticable bubble with the power of the Aussie dollar, staying at nicer hotels, I did it on a budget but could afford to eat and stay where the locals could not, and it is an unsettling feeling to be surrounded by white people overseas while being served by the local population, huge contrast particularly in phuket where I also visited. My brother is in Laos and runs a charity and provides food and medical care to many rural villages.@@jameswalker68

Problems are subjective. I've had horrible stuff happen to me in life. I've been assaulted, abused, homeless, addicted, etc and yet I would never assume that people who didn't experience these things don't have problems or reasons to be sad. Sure, some experiences are objectively worse than others. But if you've lived a real nice life and then you have a bad breakup (or whatever) that would feel like the darkest point in your life and would destroy you. I was assaulted by a guy when I was 14 and if I'm really honest, it didn't mess me up much. But being cheated on by my first long term girlfriend gave me pretty long term trust issues. Someone else might have had a different reaction to that situation and that's my point. We all experience different levels of tragedy and yet we all also experience emotional devestation because we all have a different frame of reference. I'm not a big fan of people saying "well you don't live in a literal hellscape so what could you possibly feel sad about". Seems super disingenuous and surface level.

Dear Indigo , back in 2010 I was ready to go to Pemba to teach English voluntarily when the Haitian earthquake happened and I ended up spending 9 years helping set up schools with the local communities. I actually thought I had seen the worse of the worst in the make shift camps all over Haiti, but you have proved me wrong. Mozambiquans have really been abandoned by their own government and the international community, not to mention Portugal who colonised and exploited Mozambique. It is at times like this when my heart breaks for these wonderful trusting people and I feel so much anger that I think reparations would be a small price for Portugal to pay up right now.

they are smiling because a rich stranger is pointing a camera at them, and in many places, it's considered rude to complain to strangers. why are you assuming poor people can't act in ways that are polite, instead of baring their souls to whomever comes by?

So beautiful and serene country with amazing people. In most of our African countries “if not all”, only less than 5% of our population enjoys the wealth of our countries at the expense of the 95% of the population. That’s so sad. 😢 Thank you so much for sharing with us, Nick.

The people there are so beautiful. It is absolutely so sad that greed and corruption is taking away money meant to help the people who have become 'invisible' to the government. Fantastic vlog yet again Nick. Thank you.

Wow this was such an insight to Mozambique, a part of Africa which I'm sure most people are unaware of. I hope that people could help out more and donate so these people can live a more normal and safe life that they surely deserve. Thank you Nick, much love to you and stay safe brother.
