Excellent teaching....subscribed. much appreciated educational material as I am in process of reconfiguring my whole arrow building process towards a more Ashby-esque perspective. I'm also 6'4" with 31.5 inch draw and trying to figure out how to improve FOC without too much dynamic flex is the battle I'm trying to figure out. Loved this video. Cheers!

Thank you, Brother! This explains why I am literally blowing up carbon arrows when I shoot at a MoFoam Chunk situated 110 yards away! *Note, I too am a short fellow at 6’6”! Old arrow hunting set up: 5mm Dangerous Game 250, 31.5” (nock to cut edge), 50-grain brass insert, 100-grain tip, four Zen vanes with wrap = 768.9gr: 230fps, KE- 90.2397. New arrow for 3D shoots, 5mm Easton Axis 260 same cut, insert and tip weight. I was changed to three AAE Parabolic 3/4” vanes = 557.2gr: 266fps - KE - 86.18. Equipment: G5 Prime Logic CT9, 70# (68) at 32” DL. I wish to have a 3D arrow (ASA tournaments and TAC) and a hunting arrow (I hunt black bear, whitetail, pheasant, quail, grouse and turkey in MA, PA, and VA) shot from the same bow. Gen 1:29-30, 10:9, 27:3, Acts 10:11,

hi Nate, great videos. i really enjoy your content. i am shooting 62# @ 29.750" dl . my arrow are 350 BE rampage with 50gn halfsert, 100gn point and total arrow length of 29.875" (throat to carbon). total weight of 432gn foc @ 15%. do these arrow seem suitable for my bow set? should i go shorter on arrow length? thanks again for the great content!

Very informative and makes more sense than what I have previously heard or read. So basically I need to buy the spine suggested by the manufacturers spine chart, build it out with my preferred components, and bare shaft and/or paper tune it to see if it works. Is that correct? So, you might know what static spine you start with, but you will never know what you actually end up with dynamically.

Thanks for sending me this video. Kudos on the RF endorsement! Like you I have a long arrow I am building. Mine are (carbon to carbon) 30.5. Given I want to build some with a total weight of around 580 gr (100 gr insert and 125 point - Easton Axis 5mm 250's)... I will probably add illuminated nocks and wraps (to help find them - damn I am loosing a lot of arrows with shoot throughs)... is the 250 spine too stiff? I get what you are saying about static vs dynamic now - just how exactly can you quantify the dynamic? BTW, would love to pick your brain about some arrow setups thoughts I am having.

How (or how much) do you allow for the difference in back end weight when rough tuning with bare shaft arrows? I'm getting 2" right (weak) down range with xwings (+ tape + adhesive strips) on ACE 750 spine, 27 1/4" amo shaft, 33lb at full draw at 18 metres distance (can't get to longer distances during lockdown. Help!!!!

Great question. I don't do anything for adding back weight as the front usually overpowers it by a long shot. However you're dealing with I imagine a very light setup overall shooting FITA style. So idk how to work with such a small, fickle arrow as much.

Some good info! I’m building up some hunting arrows and trying to work with what I have. I have some 350 spine arrows that were shooting like a dream with field tips and 100gr G5 M3s broadheads. I added 75 grain inserts up front and chopped them down an inch and changed to a Bohning X vane. My group has opened up about an inch but I’m blowing threw my block target now at 475 grains and 14% FOC. Is it safe to say my group is suffering because My spine is to weak?

Im fighting with 28inch Easton bloodline 330 spine and 75gr brass incert and 125 point.. I think its to weak.. My bow hoyt torrex 70# adjusted to around 64#.. Any suggestions?

I also have a 31 inch draw. I’m building my own arrows using the Ranch fairy test kit from Sirius. I’ve heard that a longer arrow is a bit more forgiving. Should I keep my arrows at 32 inches or should I cut them down? Thanks!

Great question. All comes down to how much weight you want at the front end. A 32" arrow at a 31" draw bow over 60# is going to need a 250 spine to handle anything over 250/275 up front with a modern compound. At 32" it's probably only a 275ish spine...? Hard to say.

Average Jack Archery thanks for the response. I got the 200/250 and 250/300 Vulcan test kits. I may try cutting a couple of arrows down to 31 inches and test them out to see which arrows do better based on the amount of weight I put up front. Great videos! I really enjoy them and learn a lot.

So today I picked up a heavy field tip test set (200, 225, 250, 275, 300 grain heads) along with 100gr gold top inserts. I plan to shoot a 28"(overall 27.5" shaft) 350 spine arrow with 225 up front in the way of the insert (100) and an annihilator head (125)- currently set to a 67# draw (29.5") Should I lower my draw weight or buy 300 spine arrows? Also the 300 gr field tip flew the best, which is baffling since there is no reason why the spine of that arrow should have pushed it. Your thoughts are welcome

You should 1000% be shooting a 300 spine even with that much front weight at 67# and 29.5 inches. When a broadhead gets on there the 300 will be a godsend.

Just for comparison and take it what it's worth. I'm shooting 29.75" 300 spine GT hunter xt's with 275 grains up front. They shoot great for my 30" draw at #62 and those Annihilators are bang on my field points at 40 yrds.

Hello, I would like to ask what is the weight hanging off the arrow? I'm pretty sure there is a specific standard weight hanging on the arrow, otherwise heavier/lighter weights will give a different reading.

I’m a 31” draw length too, trying to increase weight and foc but I’m a western bow hunter so I’m not shooting white tails at 15 yards I’m shooting like 35 40 yards, any tips

You're going to have to shoot a very light GPI shaft. Something like a GT Velocity or Easton Bloodline. Then you can beef up the front end. I still usually found though I couldn't creep more than 12-13% FOC before I started going well over 475gr if not 500 in total weight.

If your shooting a 300 spine arrow with 225 up front ( I think that’s what you said) what’s the poundage of your bow set at? I have a 29-1/2” draw shoot a 29”c-c BE Zombie Slayer with 300 grains up front with a standard nock and 3 max stealth banes as of right now set at 67lbs. I get bullet holes as well as some slight tears (1/2”-3/4” which I THINK may be slight bow torque) I just got a message from Troy this morning but I didn’t address poundage of my bow with my current setup. Just curious if to you I need to lower my poundage a bit or if I just need to keep working on my form? Thanks for your time, input and all the great videos. I truly appreciate people like you and Troy taking time out of your busy schedules to help the “Average Joe’s”

Like I said in the video I'm REALLY pushing the limits of the dynamic spine of that setup. Shooting 60# at 31" of draw. But through nock tuning and a slight rest adjustment I'm shooting bullet holes at 8-10 ft. I probably should be shooting 250 spine with that much weight up front but as of now budgeting only allows me to shoot what I already own. :)

Hey Darin I too shoot 29.5 inch arrows out of what was a 67lb setup. I took Troy’s advice and took one full turn out of my poundage. Not sure what that ended up at because I don’t have any way to measure it at home. It worked great! With just a little bit of rest adjusting I’m bare shaft shooting bullet holes with the 250 spine and 300 grain field points (stock inserts) And with the extra stiffness of the 250 spine I’m not worried about blowing anything up. I even stepped back to 30 and was shooting lights out with the bare shaft. I can absolutely say that would have NEVER happened with my old setup. I guess what I’m sayin is if your a little worried about the poundage like Troy says, you can take it out a little and see what happens. You can always put it back. “Keep tinkerin!”😊

I am shooting a VXR (28) at 27.5 draw at 65 lbs. My arrow is 28” 350 spine and am shooting a 125 grain broadheads. In order to elk hunt I am adding 50g to the front...screw in brass weights. Will my 350 arrow handle this or should I go to 300?

Doesn"t putting a 2/2.5 inch insert into the shaft change its flexing point. thus stiffing the spine?

Arrows don't flex at the ends....they flex in the middle portions. You'd have to stick a 4-6" insert into the arrow to make some sort of flex impact.

@@averagejackarchery To my mind, center shot resets all spines issues, dynamic and static, and we begin again, with your lesson, a good place to start. I have collected dozens of test arrows over the years and use as spine tests. Also, the type of release makes a difference. It never ends. Thanks for the good teaching.

I would like to build some crossbow bolts using 2317 arrows with 100 grain Inserts. they will be 20 inch long. The crossbow says 360, so they will be much lower in speed. Do you think I will have problems building them this way.

I will never recommend building your own bolts for today's crossbows. Too many variables with them and how powerful they are, the nocks they need to use so it doesn't dry fire, etc. Most aluminum bolts still manufactured today are 2219 arrows cut down.

Static and Dynamic are just a standard for an arrows physical reaction to an outside force. Great! With that being said, how the arrow leaves the bow creates more influence than either of those two standards at launch. I.E. the worse the tune the worse the overall arrow flight reaction off the bow. Now to the main point of this ramble. If we could come up with a standard measure for how a particular arrow reacts to a true column loaded force, (insert perfect 0 / 0 arrow tune deflection at string release, the need for a particular spine would change drastically. Place a shaft in a perfectly vertical press and add compression weight to see if point weight affects the spine deflection at all compared to a bare shaft with no point weight added. It won't!!!

@@averagejackarchery Here's the funny part: I installed the Pinwheel spine app on my phone a few hours after my initial comment, turns out that a 350 spine arrow with factory insert and 100gr point is just barely serviceable for my setup. If I go to a 300, I can hit the 200gr forward weight and be just a tiny bit substandard (the difference according to the app is 5 or 10 grains) and about 14% FOC. I'll build up the sledgehammers over the winter because GOOD 250 spine arrows are really hard to find in my part of Alberta. My BiL's arrow setup is even sketchier, since he's shooting a 29" 340 spine Axis with 200grs off the nose with an 80lb bow. When I showed him the chart, he said he was amazed he hasn't broken anything yet!

JACK, my LD nerd brain never thought about this. When using calculators and they say i should be 300-340 spine, does that mean after all the maths have been added? Meaning if im using a standard 100g FP and a standard insert 14 grain i think? i wont be adding much if any to the dynamic spine so an uncut 300 arrow (32") should really be aroound 330 give or take and then my field point shouldnt change the rating at all cause they should all be rated with 100g up front right?

It never crossed my mind before about spine and length crossing over to the negative side (i obviously know that cutting a shaft positively adds stiffness). I've always just used the online guides and when it says I'm good at 32 inches with 300 spine with a 100grain tip I never thought ab out the fact that at 32 inches my spine isn't actually 300. I shoot through paper a lot so ive never had issues just fun to think about on the negative spine chart. Might be good and fun to make a chart for us LD archers and how weight actually affects our spine. Im always so jealous on AT when i see them .300 spinned arrows and they are always cut down haha

Get the stiffest arrow you can with the weight you want. It is physically impossible to "over spine" a arrow. Unless shooting trad gear

Ya pole vault pole flex is measured the exact same way except with a 50lb weight in the middle and measured in cm.

I got a 24 inch draw and shoot 24 inch arrows easton axis 400 75 grain brass and 100 point and according to archersavtage the arrows are way 2 stiff but they tune amazing for me I can shoot 2 inch groups and 60 yards sometimes u just have to ignore chats and experiment haha

What info on an arrow's label tells you how much it weighs in grains. I bought an Arrow 2000 scale, calibrated it per instructions perfectly , however this made in China garbage gave a different weight every time I placed the same broadhead on it. So I immediately put it back in the box to ship back. I can guess and get "close enough" or be mediocre for free. Stay away from this scale even if someone states they've had good luck with it. Once upon a time in America , we did not accept "Kinda" or "Good enough". So with that off my chest I am trying to build hunting arrows and am fine with just going with whatever the manufacturer says the weight of the arrows, broad heads, whatever is but I do know that my 350 spine arrow does not weigh 350 grains. Arrow should be labeled with its spine, maybe a tolerance like runout, and then GPI.
