Having seen one of his original paintings up close in person, it looks like he used a scumble painting technique.

If you ever get the chance, go to the Frank Frazzetta museum in eastern PA. It's on his home estate and run by his family with live tours by the family. See his original work, close friendly and worth going back again!

Unequal interval selections of color from the Standard Color Wheel that illustrators like Jon Whitcomb talks about in his textbook results in greater variety of color and color rhythm.. In that kind of Color Scheme there are colors that are closer together on the Color Wheel resulting in more harmonious color and then there are colors that are further apart resulting in stronger contrast of color. So you get more harmony and contrast while in Color Schemes that are at equal intervals the result is colors that are all strongly contrasting with each other when three colors are selected like Red, yellow and blue for example.
