Don’t forget Australia is acquiring 211 to 222 Boxers. Latest reports indicate that more may be ordered in the 2020’s

Lots of potential. MBDA, Odenspeare, lots of versatility with what can be out on the modular system. Could you imagine a few hundred of them them with odenspeare mounted on the back patrolling the coastlines. Mobile, small to see or hit. Maybe some other missiles but the potential is there.

There is a misquoted term from the US civil war that says you have to get there the firstest with the mostest. The mobility of 8x8 give it advantages in a number of roles with less logistical support from tracked vehicles. And getting your troops to the best tactical positions first means you do not need to attack them and you have time for troops to dig in. While the Boxers play a support role depending on the tactical situation. The world now has much better road systems to allow wheeled vehicles relatively mobility. Modern combat now consists much more of patrol work. This means you want to cover a lot of ground quickly. Modern 8x8 vehicles can quickly move troops from one location to another. This means you have a force multiplier. And 8x8 vehicles give ground forces an integral support vehicle for infantry. Unlike helicopters that may not be available when you need them and can not remain on the ground supporting the infantry. Yes, helicopters are good but they are limited in numbers, costly and are very vulnerable to enemy fire power or accidents. And there is still a need for tracked, well and well armored vehicles for some situations. And infantry will continue to need transport to get them to the battlefield. And with the development of active armor lighter vehicles will have greater protection from missiles. And 8x8s can be used in many roles apart from infantry transport. During the Vietnam war US forces needed to sustain logistics where tracked vehicles were not available or to costly. So 6x6 trucks were given armor and firepower to provide escorts for convoys transporting troops or cargo. Some 4x4 armored cars were used for this mission only on a smaller scale. So combat even in jungle type conflicts wheeled and armored vehicles have a useful role. In wars in South Africa they demonstrated how effectively wheeled armored vehicles can be and also how they can provide protection for mines. And now we have many non linear conflicts where we do not have a real front line. And we have large numbers of mines and IEDs. For Australia's defense the army needs to cover very large territories and Australia has very good road systems. So wheeled vehicles can be very effective. Wheeled vehicles can be useful in peacekeeping, unconventional conflicts and against terrorism or guerrilla warfare. In situations where wheeled vehicles are to vulnerable they can still be used in many support roles effectively. As part of a combined arms force which could include tracked vehicles. And as another example the US used half trucks very effectively during WW2 and they used mostly rubber tracks. And those tracks had very long lifespans and reliability. Modern 8x8 vehicles could use rubber track systems in areas where wheeled vehicle mobility is less effective. Modern rubber track systems could be fitted with rubber tracks on the rear wheels. This could be used in rough terrain, snow are amphibious operations where better of road capability is needed. So 8x8 vehicles remain very practical vehicles and will do for some time. And the Boxers modular system means it can take on many roles. Australia is also likely to adopt the Lynx tracked vehicle. Sharing some components and weapons with the Boxer. And also a very modular vehicle that will integrate future technologies. Will Britain use its new 40mm turret gun with telescopic ammo from the Ajax on to the Boxer. It may be to heavy and high for the Boxer with a high center of gravity. Or is there a remote 40mm CT gun available for the boxer. Or use the existing German unmanned turret with different ammunition.

agree, these wheeled armored troop transports are far superior to tracked. usa is turning mech infantry warfare into light artillery. we already have paladins.

Some weeks ago the government of UK ordered 900 units of the Boxer for 3.2 billion euro. Australia ordered about 400 for 2.1 billion. But both contracts say that the most of the vehicles will be built in UK and Australia. In Australia they are already building the factory.
