Here is a little look behind the scenes at a couple of days in my studio- as ever enjoying jumping around in terms of material and subjects- Though I do get a little focused and organised and manage to scan and edit some works on paper.
At the end is a bit of a chat about my personal thoughts on what reaching my art potential looks like, inspired by reading a couple of books; Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid and Hidden Potential by Adam Grant. One is fiction and one non-fiction, but they both made me think about how we judge reaching our potential in a field, and keeping it relevant here - how does that relate to our own art practices?. It is interesting because I am aware it may not necessarily be about hitting top grades, winning prizes or commercial success. Maybe we can think about whether we have pushed our art in the direction we wanted it to go, made progress on our own terms, embraced the challenges, and felt a part of our practice (felt the joy, the lows, contentment), as opposed to trying to achieve outward markers of success; follower numbers, validation from gatekeepers etc. Naturally, this is a hugely personal matter- what matters to me might be quite different to you, but it is a fun journal exercise, to consider 'What does reaching your artistic potential look like ?'
I do love it when reading can inspire, and influence my art - sometimes I think fun can be had in romanticising the process, be a bit selfish and see yourself as the character at the centre of a story, as always I am all about finding the joy, curiosity in your creative process,
best Sonia
