Not to be mean but artists who like to go around being vile to others because of disagreements of styles, should wear Lego shoes.

One of the worst parts of the artist community is when people try and shame different styles of drawing and painting. One person made a completely photorealistic painting that was so detailed it was almost indistinguishable from a real photo. Someone in the comments still found stuff wrong with it; rather than appreciating the time and work that went into something so amazing, they said that the painting was “useless”, because it didn’t make any type of new thing, and basically called it a gimmick. It’s a total fact that art typically makes some type of statement, and, if you really try, any piece of art has some type of theme or meaning behind it. But even if this piece didn’t, insulting their artwork solves literally nothing and just makes you look like a jerk.

I always respect beautiful art I've seen on DA or Pixiv or Artstation. It's pretty difficult to compliment beautiful art because I have a limited vocabulary for words like "Great" "wonderful" and "Majestic"

All art has a place, an audience and people that'll find reasons to hate it. I personally don't like realistic art, but I can appreciate the skill behind it, it isn't useless - It goes to show that we can push ourselves far as artists, and that eventually - we can reach great heights on our own. Doing realistic art while there are cameras around is for me the same as a person climbing a mountain while helicopters are fully available - It's not about the ease of it, it's about to show how far we can get as people. That's a part of the message of realistic art - Pushing our skills to the top. And I personally don't like it, but, that's a part of the value I can see in it - each art type has it's own inner messages, dissing it when it does not suit your standards is pretty much just being petty.

No worries. I knew what you meant. I completely agree. I hate how when people resell their old suits, even the well kept ones that were used like only once, try to Jack up the price on it or try to add artwork into the cost of the suit. Like, the buyer should have an option wether or not they want your 300+ Pieces of art that's worth like $1000. Ya know? A suit I got from someone, they offered to give me the art for the character for free. So I don't get how art should be included in the suit price as a whole. Just make them separate.

Well depends on the maker,a head only can cost up to 500$ or more if you're getting one from a really experienced maker. So if the suit is kept clean and it comes with lots of art it can go into the thousands because they've spent a lot of money on the character. I'm also not sure what's so gross about fursuits unless you think fursuits are a sex thing then it doesn't make sense. The person was probably annoyed because lots of beggers complain about the price of these items already when they're very much a luxury item. Im kind of starting to think you just down right hate furries, we can chuckle at a joke about furries but this story seems kind of more 'furry gross'

New video! While huge egos aren't limited to artists in general (that goes for all social media online) I think the other problem comes from the nature of how sites like twitter work. They are very insular in nature and almost like an island. It gives the ILLUSION of being perceived as your own self. It makes sense. Social media is how you curate it. BUT at the same time, this has lead to a lot of insular thought. Artists who are used to only seeing their own views, their own work, their own ideas...what happens when they interact with others who crash that worldview? Many get upset. But why? Because you've entered that bubble. You've entered that space. THEIR SPACE. And whatever they say goes at a click of a button. Social media makes it very very easy to do this. Even more so with sites like twitter hiding the replies of those we don't agree with if we choose to. It's purposely set up that way to make more money. As a result, in the art community especially, it's easy to fall into that trap (something I try to avoid). It just becomes wayyyy too easy to be comfortable. And when you're comfortable, you're less likely to leave the space you've created. I think a lot of huge artists who have this problem (not all) struggle to come to terms with the fact that the internet is an open space. It was never an insular island. Your account just gives you the illusion. Once that's shattered, what do you have left? Not much to begin with. Followers come and go, art is up to you, but making your island the ONLY island is not a realistic scenario. Some people will not like your art. Some people will not agree with everything you say. No amount of complaining will change that. The best you can do is insulate yourself even more. (block/mute) And listen, I'm not saying to take every bad comment you get. But people need to understand that the internet is NEVER a safespace for your work. Remove yourself from the conversation if you want none. You may not get likes, but you keep your sanity. It's unfortunate, but I believe until people understand this, they'll never be happy and their ego will consume them until nothing remains.

The whole process of being an artist is a huge mental thing and the events and instances that take place in that process can take shape of how an artist turns out. I mean, art is stressful when taking into context about skill, style, consistency, peer review, etc. And how an artist turns out usually reflects how they deal with certain stresses.

the worst egocentric artist i ever interacted with was this metal nsfw artist on instagram. some context: she is a metalhead artist that posts anime-ish art of metal musicians, especially iron maiden and megadeth, and she has two side accounts-- one for nsfw art, another for a comic she updates frequently. while i wouldnt consider her art bad, its also kind of lacking and i understand why she would feel bad and get jealous of other artists that do similar work with metal fan art, especially when she doesnt get a lot of followers. however, there was this falling out she had with a friend of hers that she accused of stealing art and her idea for a comic (that she herself had given permission to make) and continued to rag on her for it despite it having been two months since they stopped being friends. eventually the girl getting dragged spoke out and i showed my support, and then the artist in question came at me in my dms saying "im an adult [shes 24 arguing with a 16 year old about a 19 year old shes attacking], i dont need to grow up". the whole thing was so ridiculous but it wasnt even new for her. several times before she would insult her nsfw followers for not interacting enough or unfollowing, and she would constantly rant about being jealous of other artists because they would do something similar to her but also have more skills. she literally just could not handle not being the only nsfw or exclusively metal artist on instagram and would bitch about it until her followers grovelled at her feet and told her her art was great

I remember making an art trade with someone and it was a weird experience. So they asked to do an art trade and I had nothing else to do so I was like “yeah sure what do you want me to draw?” They said their oc who was an animal. I then said “ok then, can you draw my oc who was in (insert placement of reference).” Then they said “sorry I can’t draw humans.” I was kinda confused but I just went along with the trade anyway. Then out of curiosity I was scrolling through their account and I found a post that said “hopefully this gets more likes, some people just don’t know talent when they see it.” I was honestly kind of shocked but just went about my day. Now I kind of wish I said “sorry I don’t draw animals.” What a weird experience.

social media also indulges one in this psuedo fantasy of celebrity status. As for the backstabbing, unfortunately the cutthroat comedy is predictable as the day is long. What some don't realize when they decide to jump into that game and start it, is while they're off picking apart others to keep their status symbol in check, there's always someone else in their midst waiting and biding their time for the opportune moment to strike and have their day. And it only continues on as a vicious and toxic cycle.

I unfortunately ran into one of these artists whom I used to look up to. I’m not gonna say names but this artist is popular within the furry community. This happened at around a year ago I think? Keep in mind that this artist is older than me and I thought that giving them a little bit of tough love to what I said was alright...let’s just say their boyfriend blocked me after he was rude to me in my DMs and they made themselves look like I was harassing them. Here’s the story. So there was a reference sheet this artist had of their own character. I didn’t like the colors of it because they clashed too much. Dark purples mixed with dark metal grays as well as neon green. That sort of thing. And since coloring is my shtick I decided to critique them. Keep in mind I wasn’t being rude to them in any way. I was being blunt. I said along the lines of “I don’t like the colors because they clashed too much.” I then went onto to explain why and suggested that they could experiment more with Color Theory and different color pallets and that it would be cool to see what they could do with them. I also said I liked the design itself of the character. The artist then responded saying that that was their intention of it. That the character was meant to look messy with their own colors. I then said “Well if that was your intent, that’s fine. I just wanted to give you a heads up about it cause I think you can do great with coloring.” You would think this was the end of the interaction but nope! The artist went on with a long paragraph of them saying how I was being rude for criticizing their personal character and that they never asked for my criticism. This made me dumbfounded cause that’s not how criticism works and I was only being a little blunt in the beginning. I was also shocked on how they blew it out of proportion after thinking that that was the end of the interaction with them. I thought that a 20 something year old would handle this because it’s their career. Whether they like it or not, they’ll get criticism. It’s very entitled on how they would even mention that you have to give permission in order to critique them. Like imagine going up to a chef and the chef hands you food, you then say that there might be too much seasoning or say that there’s hair in it and that you don’t like it. The chef then gets defensive saying how you shouldn’t say that to a chef cause it’s rude and that you should’ve given permission in order to critique their work. That’s entitlement right there except this is an artist saying this. Anyways, back to this. I then had to explain myself about critiques and that I thought the interaction would end right then and there and pointed out that they shouldn’t blow this out of proportion. They then went onto say that they shouldn’t be demanded to be critiqued and that they’re a person with feelings. What? I never demanded anything, I only suggested to experiment and the feelings part? Wtf? It sounds like this person has never been taught what critique is. No one is gonna sugar coat it all the time. That’s just how it is. If you can’t take critique, you won’t be able to make it into the art or animation industry because unlike me, they’re a lot more harsh and unmerciful. And that’s what happens with a lot of artists and animators. They don’t last a week at a studio because they would be told to scrap what they love and instead of listening to following through the critiques, they quit. It’s a real shame that this happens to artists and animators alike. That’s why you gotta swallow your pride and work on what you need improving cause there’s always room for it. They made it seem like I was harassing them when I was just being blunt to them and thought that an artist older than me could take it. Apparently not. I then told them if they’d like they can’t critique my own characters since I know I’m not perfect. They then said “I know what you’re trying to say, that I don’t accept critique or whatever but I find it uncomfortable to do that.” I then got fed up and went onto my story (this was on Instagram, and in retrospect, I disagree with this but eh) to quote Tony Stark with “If you’re nothing without the suit then you shouldn’t have it.” and made it how if artists think they don’t need critiques then maybe they shouldn’t try to improve or seek improvement cause that kind of entitlement doesn’t get them far. Their boyfriend then replied to this story saying “Got farther than you hun 😘 there’s a difference between giving critique and being a cunt.” I then repeated for the last time that I thought that the interaction would since I already came into an agreement with them but then they blew it out of proportion. He then said “No fuck that attitude 😂” and then went onto talking about my art badly to try to make it personal but I know what he was trying to do and ignored that. He then said “Critique doesn’t mean shit unless it’s wanted.” I then reply with “If my critique was shit as you said, then how come they shouldn’t have ignored it lmao?” I then got blocked after that. So never critique artists online kids especially when you give them a little bit of tough love. It shows their entitlement and how insecure they feel about their art. Also, age doesn't equal maturity. I only thought that they know this by their age because it seems they've drawn longer than me and have more experience. I kid I kid. The lesson is this: learn how to take critique even if it’s a hard pill to swallow. You’ll be a more professional artist as well as humble. Never think of yourself as somebody like this artist did. It’s only gonna hurt you in the long run and it’ll make you a lot more cocky or insecure. It’s good to have validation every now and then but don’t let that feed your ego enough to get to your head. All artists are entitled with our work especially if it’s personal but what should break it is finding mistakes to improve upon ourselves instead of trying to make ourselves look like the victim. Cause that’s not gonna get you far especially in the art/animation industry.

As a furry myself making fursuits. I agree whole heartedly that so many people don't get how reselling used ones works. Usually a used partial even lightly used, is only sold between $100-$400. (Unless it's one made by a famous person in the community) it jacks up the price no matter the condition and that pisses me off. Now the thing is, fursuits, even heads by themselves, are between $100-$600 depending on how much effort is actually put into it. (And detail. If it isn't professional looking. The price lowers apparently) It does make me confused as to why people include art piles into their suit costs when they sell a suit they don't want anymore. Like if the buyer wants the art then fine but don't include that in the price for the fursuit itself. Ya know? Thats just my take on it but the calling each other out thing over petty shit is very common amongst artists of all types. I see it a lot on Instagram. I dont get it personally. I also had a friend recently whose girlfriend accused her of marking theft on a character just because they had a similar marking from google on their characters. It was nuts

T.F am I doing here ? I'm not even an artist, I'm a bassist ! Joke aside, as a musician, I have to face those type of behaviours quite frequently and... it sucks. Maybe people that practice some kind of art do consider (maybe subconciously) that they do something that get them above the average crowd ? That they are "special" because art have that kind of strange feeling that it's something difficult which often require years of practice/ talent ? (Oh, btw, you're name is funny for me, for french people, it means something like "miss wee-wee")

ok i gotta fucking agree though. a few months ago on instagram an artist commented on a beginner artists post about how horrible it looked and that it was garbage INSTEAD of giving them constructive criticism. i fucking hate people who think theyre higher than everyone else even though they started small too.

don't forget the hug boxxing and echo chambers some (not all of coarse) artists like to build. it's easier to fall into those habits then one would like to think. i remember having a minor disagreement with someone (don't even remember what it was, but it was a very minor disagreement), and they just responded with "WELL IF YOU DON'T LIKE MY OPINIONS THEN I'LL HAVE TO ASK YOU TO UNFOLLOW AND BLOCK ME >:(" like... dude chill all i did was disagree with your opinion...

There this artist on Instagram who attacked me for giving a slight amount of constructive criticism. They keep on saying how I have I no right to critique them. I told them I just wanted to help them to see them improve, they continue to attack me and bought they’re friends to attack me too. After that I quickly stop supporting that artist, I would say their name but they’re still pretty popular on Insta today. I do have screenshots.
@stardoogalaxie9314
@stardoogalaxie9314 4 года назад
What was the criticism? You're framing yourself as someone who was "just a poor Critic" and in the same breath you dont namedrop the artist because "they're still popular." If you knew you were right or understandable in your critique and knew that the response was unwarranted, you'd have no trouble dropping the name of the artist. What you're saying doesn't sit right. Edit: "you have no right to critique" seems like a hard paraphrase. No one really says "you have no right to ____" unsolicited critique isn't great or helpful to begin with because it doesn't know or understand the goals of the artist and it depends on nitpicks that would've been helpful if it was a wip.

@@stardoogalaxie9314 sorry it too me so long to reply just now see it The artist is Saihgara. I basically told them "You should work on different body types and faces... A lot of your characters have the same faces and body type ... so it kinda hard to tell which character is which". and for the "No right to critique" they were using my amount of followers and likes as a defense.
@stardoogalaxie9314
@stardoogalaxie9314 3 года назад
BINGIEBOI okay, so I looked at the artists’ work and it seems like they have a very specific thing going. Your critique doesn’t seem detailed enough to really fit what the artists’ goals are, especially seeing the current state of their art. Their case isn’t the one of “it’s just my style” because there’s deliberate choices being made throughout. When you mentioned that they were popular I didn’t think you meant 60k popular because your original comment is characterized as something personal. He sicced his friends on you and he attacks you specifically? Pretty shitty of this artist to send people after you for constructive criticism. I don’t know all of the details and I’m not sure where this comment was placed, and you were probably justified in some way. Well, mow you know for next time that maybe some critiques need to be sandwiched. Kinda like chopping up your Brussel sprouts and hiding them in the cooking.

I used to have a friend who was an egocentric prick. She'd never compliment my art because it was better than hers, meanwhile she would compliment others who she deemed herself better than. She knew she had flaws but yet rejected any criticism let alone the idea of changing. I just think she was jealous of me as a whole or just didn't like me at that point. I dunno lol. Now she's a Instagram artist who still draws people like stiff midgets :)

a big artist and i did an art trade and she seemed really excited about it. i did my side of the trade and then didn't bother her about it since she said she was busy, but one month later i politely asked her how the drawing was (and told her it didn't need to be a masterpiece just a lil doodle), left me on read, and then blocked me :/

i had an ex friend who definitely had a fragile ego. she has a fairly large audience now but a couple years ago (we had stopped being friends for a while already but i’d still get notifications from her deviantart) she had this really huge overreaction to a small bit of criticism she got on one of her recent posts. i had seen the comment before she turned off comments and it wasn’t malicious or mean criticism. if i remember correctly, it was a comment about the eyes being distracting to the rest of the art since they were very dark while the rest was soft pastels. i remember her and her boyfriend started harassing the commenter and encouraged their followers to message them and posted publicly about it until they deleted their account. big yikes.

I think these people are really just egotistical at heart and their art and fanbase just fans the flame of narcissism. I don't think it's impossible for a large fanbase to make someone feel cocky and untouchable but I feel like a decent artist wouldn't look down on others just based off their numbers unless they were already prone to being that conceited in the first place.

For me, the worst types of artists are the ones that are all like “you’re doing this wrong, my way is the only way”, there’s this one art RU-vidr who I won’t name because I don’t wanna start a witch hunt (if you know, you know) who makes videos like “DON’T DRAW HANDS LIKE THIS EVAR! EVAR EVAR!” and “DRAWING LIKE THIS IS FOR BABIES”. Like, how about you just let me draw in peace and not scream at me for doing something a certain way.
