That "Synanon" story sounds like something worth examining further. Those techniques sound like something from the "Human Potential Movement" which I think was based out of Big Sur California. There are all sorts of cults and odd ball psycho-spiritual movements from that time and place, Prisoners and addicts would be particularly fresh meat for them.
