'Eligible' being the key word there. I'll never understand people who go to the Olympics representing another country, especially in a team sport where their chances of winning gold are greatly elevated by the defection. I'm not talking about refugees or rejected athletes here, I'm talking about a country like Cameroon, who would dearly love to have Embiid on the floor for them, but seems he's not interested in his heritage, his compatriots or the challenge of taking on the other nations. Just interested in the gold.

What most people won’t admit: the Dream Team was as much about the lack of world competition as much as the greatness of Team USA. The world caught up to USA in basketball competition in the mid 00s, so a dominant showing from this Olympic squad could very well top the Dream Team’s run.

Their dominance and talent is solidified as the greatest expression and performance of basketball on the worlds stage. This current iteration of USA Basketball will not top or ever come close to the dream teams run. Again, since the dream team, other countries have drastically improved at basketball. Edit: Not to downplay the talent of the Dream Team but the 90s NBA was already full of filler players that wouldn’t make a roster today. So imagine the other countries trying to scrape together a team let alone players with actual talent when basketball wasn’t nearly as popular as it is now.

The Dream Team didn't play against great international competition back then. The game was relatively new to many of the countries they faced. As much as it pains me to say this, but i gotta keep it real, their dominance was a tab bit over hyped. They were supposed to win those games. The redeem team with Kobe, LBJ, and Melo was better. That team played against far superior competition.

When you consider modern-day medicine and fitness and how much more athletic today's players are, this old head team would probably be able to compete with the DT.

Their top tier players couldn't compete with ours back then. It was like Varsity vs. JV. Go back and look at the roster of the international players the Dream Team competed against.
