Giving up stuff for Lent is good, but it should not be a substitute for fasting. Firstly, the fast of Lent is an ecclesial act, not a private one. While one ought not make shows of piety in observing the fast, keeping the same fast as other Catholics is part of your witness to the world. If Peter is giving up video games, Paul is giving up booze, John is giving up Twitter and Mary if giving up chocolate, you are not fasting as a Church. How, then, is Lent any different from a new diet or a self-improvement regime? The witness of a communal fast is similar to the witness that monastics make by renouncing temporal good things for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Lent for Catholic laity should be similar - you are showing the world not only that there is something to hope for, but also that governing your passions so as to focus on that hope is indeed possible. Without discounting the ascetic or penitential aspect of the fast, remember that all of this is supposed to be leading up to the celebration of the most important event in human history - the death and resurrection of Christ, and the consequent salvation of man. The other reason why the fast should be observed according to the practices prescribed by the holy Fathers is that the option to “give up” something else makes it easy to delude oneself. Is giving up whatever it is that you are giving up actually less of a sacrifice than abstaining from meat? If not, why are you doing it instead of observing the prescribed discipline? Were you giving up Twitter for God? Or was it something that you wanted to do, and Lent gave you a reason to start doing it? Not that that is bad as such, but that isn’t fasting - it is having your spiritual life piggyback off of other, secular concerns, while tricking yourself into thinking you are being more “spiritual.” Western Easter and Orthodox Pascha are about a month apart this year. We will begin Great Lent on March 18 - around the time the traditionalists of you are starting Passiontide. Here are our rules: No meat, fish, dairy, egg, wine or oil for the entire period (relaxed on Sundays to allow wine and oil). This rule was written for monks, and is extremely difficult to do in the world. Now, I cheat on it then justify myself with BS like, “Thank God I screwed up, because if I had kept the fast, I would have grown proud” (see also ditching Church on Great and Holy Friday “in imitation of the Holy Apostle Peter”). However, what I *should* do is consult with my spiritual father as to how much I should mitigate the fast in light of my individual circumstances, then stick to what he tells me to do. You Catholics might want to consider something similar. If the rules of fasting and abstinence that your Church prescribes is too easy, consult with your spiritual father and have him tell you what more to give up. That way, you are not only guarding against prelast by having a wise third party evaluating your ascesis to make sure it really is ascetic, but you are also practicing obedience by having said third party give you a rule rather than an organization giving you suggestions.
