Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with Ashley Pope, President of Autism Society of Ventura County, which is a local California affiliate of the Autism Society of America. They do programs to promote lifelong access and opportunity for all individuals within the autism spectrum and their families to be involved. Ashley shares how she got involved after her son’s diagnosis of autism. Before that she was an active volunteer and involved in the local business community.
Ashley shared thoughts on the following topics:
1. Dealing with common misconceptions in the autism community, and working to change the narrative.
2. Understanding that accessibility relates to every aspect of the world, not a one-time effort.
3. How younger generations are showing a different level of understanding and kindness.
4. Hiring practices for people with disabilities.
