Dear Abby, I've heard a lot of health experts say that the most important thing for a healthy diet is variety, but I find myself wanting pretty much the same exact foods every day. Most of it is healthy and I am getting stuff from every food group, but do I need to change things up in order to 'optimise' my health?
@wa6184
@wa6184 3 года назад
I recommend counting how many different plant foods you eat in a week. The aim is around 40 (includes fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes etc). If you get around that amount in a week, you're good 😄 (Check Plantproof on IG for fully science backed information)

Maybe only eating "healthy" food is part of the problem? Are you getting any satisfaction from what you're eating? The satisfaction factor is important.
@roj499
@roj499 3 года назад
Along this line, if we do need to switch things up and get variety, can it be week to week, does it have to be day to day, etc!
@moxypicture5681
@moxypicture5681 3 года назад
@@Snickerdoods.x this is a pretty bad take. no need to add processed/unhealthy food if you dont crave it. "adding variety" implies optimizing your nutrition, unhealthy foods add no benefits to your diet. of course if your normal diet makes you crave certain unhealthy foods, by no means cut them out completely. but no need to include them otherwise.

About the collagen supplements: I watched Cassandra Banksons video (you might know her, she's part of skincare tribe on YT, highly educated too), and she went in depth on how collagen is a very large protein that consists of different aminoacids. The thing is, that if consumed in it's original form, your digestion will break it down, since it can't be absorbed just as it is; also, your skin cannot absorb it topically. So, tehnically, you get a lot of aminoacids, but there's no way of telling whether your body will use them for the health of your joints, or your skin - it puts it, where it needs it. Bottom line, claims like 'it will target directly your skin, hair and nails!' are bs - you can get the same result with good protein powder. The only reason there might be results is, because aminoacids are great, if you eat enough, it's bound to show, right? (I'm paraphrasing this, so excuse me if there's awkward non-scientific wording here)

Wow, I'm so glad I found this older video of yours! I basically eat very little during the day and eat mostly at night. This is based upon my VERY unusual job and that I prefer to sit down and enjoy the food I prepared without being interupted. I tend to grab a quick couple handfuls of peanuts when I get hungry during the day to keep me going and then thoroughly enjoy the nice, balanced meals I prepare for my dinner. I've worried/wondered a lot about this since subscribing to your channel. Everything else is going great with my change in lifestyle but the timing of my meals concerned me as I mostly only eat 1 large meal a day. Thanks for another great video!!!!

I’m glad you didn’t make IF a instant eating disorder. I genuinely loved IF and felt great physically and emotionally. It didn’t feel restrictive to me at all and there was no shame if I was hungrier on a single day or even a few consecutive days. I never felt disappointed if I needed to break a fast early or never felt the need to plan life events around being able to fast 😂 It felt natural and convenient to me. It saved me so much money during the pandemic and it fit my work schedule at the time. It even lessened some of the symptoms of my chronic conditions. My work schedule has changed and my activity level has increased so I stopped fasting because it no longer fits my current routine but I learned a lot about myself and food while I was fasting last year and value the experience for myself. I never recommend it to other people tho because I know people can quickly become competitive or obsessive. It’s not for everyone, and it’s obviously not even for me, all the time but it was 100% for me last year 😂

Intermittent fasting helps. Eat good meals but don't snack, eating raises your sugar and insulin. Insulin resistance is associated with being prediabetic. Insulin resistance is like being pale skin. If you're pale you protect yourself from the sun more. If you have insulina resistance you protect yourself from sugar more.

Hi Giselle, I have psoriasis since childhood (I'm in my mid thirties) and it was ok while I managed to keep in check my stress levels and general health/immunity(whenever I have a health problem or inflammation of any kind, my psoriasis flares like crazy), while not following any "traditional" treatment. All went well until two years ago when, after a very stressful mental and physical period, my psoriasis extended on other parts of the body and didn't go away after the stressful period was gone. Desperate, I searched for new studies and stumbled upon the "Leaky Gut Syndrome" theory (that states that most auto-immune diseases come from a problematic gut), and some forums with people who have psoriasis vouching that collagen helped them in fixing their gut and therefore the psoriasis. I said I'll give it a try, even though the "leaky gut" theory is still a theory and there is still little evidence to it (and I also read the studies Abbey is mentioning about skin, bones and joints and I said "why not" as it doesn't have side effects). All I can say is that my psoriasis is now at an all times low (I have only a few spots on my scalp, that come and go), after taking collagen for about a year. I chose hydrolyzed collagen, with type 1, 2 and 3, in powder form, just to be sure (liquid>powder>capsules). I looked into an anti-inflammatory diet as well, but it was too restrictive for me. I don't know if is a placebo effect, or what it is, but at this moment I don't really care. I've also noticed that when I stop taking it for more than 2 weeks, my elbows start itching and I start having small dots of psoriasis there again (my back and chest are fine now). The only downside of it is that it tastes like... well... collagen. With soups you don't feel the taste, and in smoothies is ok-ish. I tried yogurt, milk and other stuff and it's just yuck! With ramen/pho you don't know that's there. Also, wanted to say that my father has IBS and this is probably hereditary to some extent, because both me and my sister have psoriasis (if we really go with the leaky gut theory) and she also has IBS. My sister now takes collagen as well, and has seen some improvement, but my father doesn't like the taste and I could not make him take it for more than a week... You can try it if you want and see if it helps (I suggest to try it at least a month or two to see if it works), and if not, at least you tried? Sorry for the long story. I would really like to see scientists would focus more on causation for this horrible thing, not just on effects and ointments and such. And if my story helps anyone, that's great! TL;DR: you can try collagen and see if it helps. Just make sure you use a version with all 3 types of collagen.

Love this new feature! I have a question for you. I'm a high school teacher, so I am often scoffing my meals and snacks throughout the day (I try not to! But it's often unavoidable). However, my question is about the end of the day. Whether I'm leaving at 4pm or 7.30pm, I am always STARVING when I get in my car. What would be some healthy-yet-satisfying options I could snack on that won't ruin me for dinner? It's a battle every day not to stop for a (sweet or cheesy) snack en route home.

Thank you for directing me to this video, Abbey! It did help answer some of my questions, and is overall really cool. Can't believe I missed this! I would love to see a video sometime on how these collagen supplements (or maybe one in particular, if you're doing a single-product review?) purport to work. For someone like me with a (common, autosomally dominant) connective tissue disorder, or with any other genetic connective tissue disease (goodness, there are so many, and so many people with them!), it could be very important to know, for example, if collagen gets too broken down to be directly imparted into the tissue when taken orally. If it doesn't, and it can actually be directed to places in the body where our connective tissue is negatively affected, it could change a lot of people's quality of life; if not, and if they purport instead to stimulate the body's natural collagen growth, they could be completely useless to people like me who don't make collagen correctly in the first place. Is there any evidence you're able to find on these things? I realize this would be a total deep dive, and only one aspect of what you'd be examining if you chose to make a whole video on one collagen supplement or another. But I think it'd be fascinating, AND super useful!

Hi Abbey, congratulations on your baby! I just have a follow-up question on the protein intake. So let's say I am aiming for 1.6g/kg. I currently weigh 85 kg, which means I should consume 136g of protein per day. I seem to remember that you said the body cannot absorb more than 30g of protein per meal. So this means that I would have to roughly eat 5 meals per day with 27g of protein per meal in order to get my necessary protein and my body being able to actually absorb it. Is this right? If I do so, what kind of snacks should I eat other than protein shakes? I cannot think of a vegetarian snack that has that much protein!

I work out 5 days a week doing weight lifting, yoga and Pilates and I’m 150/160 lbs so I think I need 110/120g of protein. Time to up the protein! Right now I’m only getting 80-90g a day...

Q: I forgot to exercise in 2020, like at all, and worked from home. I've lost tons of muscle and stamina, and gained some love handles. Is there anything else I can do to get my metabolism back, besides just moving again? I'm so unmotivated now that I get winded so quickly. I've been craving lots of leefy greens lately too, and I'm curious as to why, as I usually don't crave those that much.

Hey Abbey! In india the consumption of a non vegetarian diet is very limited and most people eat mostly a vegetarian diet. I personally find it extremely challenging to meet my protein needs per day as from where I'm from the ONLY source of protein available is chicken (too much to handle per day especially the lean breast pieces) and fish (i personally don't eat sea food haha) but never in my life have i had any other meat (bacon, beef, etc) so all i do have available is cottage cheese and legumes as the primary carb sources that have SOME protein. Would love some recommendations to meet protein needs in a mostly vegetarian diet. I find that even in trying to meet my protein needs the carb level goes way beyond normal as most meals are entirely carb based.

Thank you for this comment. I’m a vegetarian and I constantly struggle with high carb. To eat just enough protein I end up eating a whole lot of carb. I know carbs are not bad, but it’s just too much carb and overall I end up gaining a lot of weight.
@mksketchms
@mksketchms 3 года назад
@@pallavi6752 exactly my issue that's why i commented haha! :) we indians really struggle with this collectively lol it bothers me so much because that's an unhealthy amount of carbs just trying to meet daily protein needs which barely reaches 80 grams and the carbs start reaching 180+ within just a few meals because of it

I've tried intermittent fasting and all it did was make me feel really restricted. I already have issues with disordered eating and a bad relationship with food. Fasting aggravated these issues. My dad told me to do it because he lost weight on it. I've tried it multiple times and it doesnt do it for me. He keeps discouraging me from trying a different weight loss plan. He has told me he doesn't have faith that I'll be able to lose weight without his help. He has told me multiple times that I couldn't do it.

I’m going to be 48 years old on the 16th of this month and I feel myself freaking out when I gain a few extra pounds because I feel like I’m trying to avoid gaining the 10+ pounds that seem inevitable during menopause transition. I’ve heard that plant based is better because of its heart healthy benefits. Currently, I try to add all food groups into each meal and focus on a carb with protein for my snack. I also do intermittent fasting. Please HELP!!!! 😊❤️

I have a very physically active job (I’m an archaeology tech) and regularly walk miles through the woods off trail in a day while carrying a backpack that weighs about 20lbs. I’m not really much of a gym person. (Who wants to go to the gym after walking five miles through the woods or digging and screening 25 holes at work?) So I wonder how much of “fitness” nutrition applies to me. Since my physical activity is so spread out, my goal with food tends to be to keep hydrated and satiated enough to not want to chew my own arm off halfway through the morning. So what of this whole carbs before workout and protein after applies to me?

I barely eat 3 times a day, is that that bad? I have a small breakfast (10-11 am), big lunch (2 or 3pm), and might have a light snack at night (8-10 pm). I just don't get hungry a lot throughout the day and I was raised with big lunches and no breakfast so that's what I am used to. How bad is that for my health?
@georgaisobel6959
@georgaisobel6959 3 года назад
As long as you're eating enough nutrients and calories when you do eat, it won't be bad for your health. Everyone is different, if you're truley listening to your body then that's fine. If you feel like your need it maybe throw a snack in around 12-1 but just listen to your body, make sure your calories and nutrients are in check and you're fine x

Georga Pead I mean I don't know, it's kind of a lot of pressure to put on lunch considering my breakfast and night snack are usually the same thing, which I rotate between cereal, cookies, bread with butter or bread with eggs. I eat when I'm hungry and the only thing I control is to not eat too late at night cuz I get reflux (inhereted from my dad). I already feel like I eat more than my body wants, I force myself to eat a breakfast and delay lunch a few hours, otherwise I'd have an early lunch at 12 instead of eating breakfast and lunch.
@rachelmckitterick
@rachelmckitterick 3 года назад
How do you feel physically? As in, what are your energy levels like? I wouldn't say it's bad to eat only 2-3 times a day IF, like the above person said, you are getting enough calories/nutrition in. There is the possibility that maybe you are not eating enough to have hunger signals. This can happen when you under eat for long enough.
@mariel1766
@mariel1766 3 года назад
Rachel McKitterick I feel fine throughout the day. My energy levels stay steady as far as I can tell. It's funny cuz my partner, that eats the same amount of times as me, maybe one more late at night, gets slow and down after lunch and wants to nap, which I found weird but he said it was normal to him. I hate napping during the day, I've never gotten sleepy with daylight. The way we eat is the way it's done in my country. When I was a kid, probably till 6th grade I had an actual dinner at 8 pm, a little less big than lunch, but ever since then my parents were like if you are hungry see what you can make, which as an 11 yo bread was the easy way and that has stuck. My parents eat like this too, they had dinner for us cuz we were kids only while we were growing up. Partner's parents eat like this. I barely know of people that have an actual dinner at night.
