A previous question put me in mind of a mistake I made in my life that was very painful at the time. But looking back through the years, I think of "time machine thought experiments" like, "would I change anything", the answer is always no. Yes, it sounds like a mistake at the time, and it was painful, but I healed, and I'm a better man for it, and in a better position because of it. You don't know what will happen in the future because of today's mistakes but they form the tapestry of your life. Accept them and let them be part of that tapestry (speaking of tapestry, the Star Trek Next Generation episode "Tapestry" deals with this very well).

She then asks me if they investigate unicorns and if the tooth fairy is real. So now when she's done with her reading, we're going to watch Mythbusters. As a lower middle class child, I grew to appreciate Mega Blocks as a necessary evil. I didn't want to use them but sometimes they were required for finishing larger projects when money was tight. I'd try to hide them in the middle of projects though

Adam, I watched this almost 2 years after this video was released and Im pretty sure COVID is gonna be gone in just two weeks, we really mean it this time! Jokes aside, I usually listen to your videos in the background while working around my house, and this one really spoke to me. Your positive views about STEAM and the Maker Movement have impacted my life tremendously. The thing that surprised me the most is your comments about self forgiveness. Ive been in therapy a few years, and when you mentioned self forgiveness, it felt like one of those light bulb moments that changes your life. Is 2 A.M. and I'm waiting for a few renders to finish. I watch Adam stand and run back to his workshop looking for I'm sure is a lovely piece. He comes back empty handed, and is even better because he'll look for it some other time and share that piece with even more details and memories. No TV, nor cinema will allow this kind of engagement. I love it. I love to hear your stories. I'll be here. Waiting happily.

Thanks for saying this. I’m in the same boat. I’ve managed to override my depression sufficiently to become an internationally acclaimed artist. I get inspired by people who are not only talented but seem to have unlimited energy and optimism. I’m sure Adam has his dark side too. I have only two gears. Inertia and full gas. Hang in there. Make stuff. It’s always a way to contribute. That’s a great thing.

Adam, your thoughts at the end of this Ask Adam video (about the Maker Movement) are as timely in December 2021 as they were in May 2020. I was pushed into retirement in October 2020, at age 61, and after taking a year to chill and rebalance, I've found a new path forward, and will found my own drone services firm. Forest Park in Portland, Oregon is over 5000 acres, amazing and beautiful but it's mostly forest. Golden Gate Park is amazing (loved going there when I lived in the Sunset District), plus it has windmills AND bison!

What tripped me out was when I first realized that GG Park was ~20% bigger than Central Park in NYC: 843 acres.

Forest Park in St. Louis is over 6,000 acres. Massive green spaces, museums, outdoor opera house, a zoo, etc. Really worth of visit if you're ever near St. Louis.

This whole format is both soothing and very helpful, and by that I mean, I am binge watching your "Ask Adam" videos like a background podcast. At the moment, I am sorting my LEGO pieces in tandem with this particular video. So a few of the topics addressed here are actually relevant to my current task at hand. Obviously there was the early question about sorting LEGO that is directly applicable, but there are also the segments about our current health climate and how that has impacted or personal environments, whether it be through house cleaning or otherwise. I've collected LEGO my entire life to the point where I've grown completely attached. But I never seriously worked on sorting my pieces, and they typically get dispersed in every area of my room. Sorting them was just impossibly daunting and, as you may have guessed, became a pipe dream I'd set aside for later. But now, with our current health crisis, I have more time at home to dedicate to procrastinated projects. And I have seriously considered my commitments. So podcasts, and streams that mirror the podcast formula, have become my go-to auditory companion as I work. I might also sign up to Audible soon as a potential multitasking alternative.

Adam, I appreciate you and your skills; excellent points of views from time to time as well. Something I feel needs to be recognized on a level greater than it ever is, is the fact you and Jamie worked together for many years, while, if I may identify it as, not desiring ones company, treated one another with consideration and at minimum, a human respect. My observations, although admittedly minimum, have always been, the two of you do not dislike each other, the clashing of character makes it challenging to interact from time to time. With that you still find ways to do it constructively and appropriately. Thank you for sharing all of things you do.

Awesome discussion about San Francisco. Having grown up there myself--in the Richmond District, that space between Golden Gate Park and the Presidio, I loved this. Sad though--when I looked up my favorite theater-it's no longer there. It was one of George Lucas' as well. One theater, one big screen--where I first saw Star Wars.

OMG! Japan town Bowl... I started out there as a pinsetter mechanic when they first opened, and became the Head mechanic a few years later, before moving on to a 40 year career in IT in 1978. I still have a couple of unused pins sitting on my bookcase from those days. You're so correct about the many interesting enclaves and secret places... like the "other" crookedest street, that is actually a steeper grade than Lombard. There are so many places that are gone... you mentioned the industrial areas, who can forget Goodman Lumber on Bayshore that was a SF institution.

Our visit to S.F. was one of our most favorite. Climbing Lombard Street was very cool. Anchor Brewing tour gives free beer samples. Cable car mechanical building also great. We went on a party boat to watch 4th of July fireworks but the fog was so thick the displays were just barely visible. Muir Woods, Alcatraz and Sonoma wineries were also fun. GO!

Yes! Blade Runner is best seen theatrical cut first, and one of the directors cuts afterward. Once that voiceover gives you the layout, the director's cut is so immersive, not just visually but that ambient soundscape reveals so many layers to that world.

I don't know why, but Adam mentioning Metropolis (around 10:30), an anime none of my friends know about and that I have not watched since I was 7 or 8 around when it came out (my parents just saw a cartoon and thought nothing else of it) made my heart clench. Not in any bad way, but it did. That was the same day I watched Princess Mononoke for the first time which is still probably my favorite Miyazaki film and still makes me tear up a little bit. These are memories I haven't thought about in at least a decade. This is really just a long winded and seemingly unrelated way of saying thank you, Mr. Savage. The lockdown has been difficult for my family, between a younger sister with a compromised immune system, my parents living in their garage for the first four months while they waited for a new house to be built, my older sister and her family dealing with injuries and illnesses beyond even the current plague, and my father being diagnosed with (and beating!) cancer. Despite not having to deal with any of those hardships being on my own shoulders, I've been doing my best to keep everyone else in the best places they can possibly be (I'm aware that sounds self-centered, I'm just not great at finding the proper words for these things). I know for a fact that watching Mythbusters during my middle and high school years helped me through some very dark times and I can definitely say that you are continuing that trend even today. I once found fake Legos while visiting Crete, and the best part was the name. They were called lebq and the series that those particular lebqs were a part of was called star wart.

Chicago suburbanite here.. got fam in San Fran, my dad’s from Redwood City. This year in particular, watching our amazing cities, all sized of towns, the main streets, the old industrial parks, shoreline and rail yards.. the little remaining patches of woods and marshes, get demolished and engulfed by outside developers like a Sims game has given me a grief so deep and pervasive..

I used to have a shop with near infinite storage. 15,000 sq ft old warehouse, could stack things 40' high! It's not as nice as it sounds. I was always running around looking for things scattered over a HUGE area and going up and down stairs. Inevitably every project would require at least one tool or part from the other far corner of the place. My favorite part was my tool room, about 12x12, kept dehumidified and well organized, most of my tools were in there. Nice to keep all the tools in an ideal environment for them, and charge everything in one place. This room was also very secure so anything of high value was kept there. When you have such a giant building, it seems random people will always find their way in when you have a door open or something, security can be a big headache. A shop that size needs a crew of at least 2-3 people just to dig around for stuff!

33:40 I used to talk about this subject with my late Uncle Joe a lot, and the saying I derived from our discussions was as follows; hoarding is when you stop owning the things in your space, and they begin to own you. Adam’s piano parts make for a good example. Say you get your hands on some really great piano parts and stash them away until 7 years later when finally the stars align and your friend asks you to fix their piano for them. Now you can finally use those parts for the thing they were meant to be used for and free up some space while you’re at it. But oh, wait, you can’t! Because they’re hidden under the pile of other great things you’ve accumulated over those 7 years and now you can’t use them. Now you effectively don’t own those awesome piano parts because you can’t access them, and they own free real estate in your shop. And that friends is why staying at least somewhat organized is imperative when you have a shop inventory of any substantial size.

I am in the process of electrifying a truck. It is a lot of work, but the restoration and body work was the most time consuming part. Although now, it is easier to buy an existing used EV with high speed charging and just move all of the components over. There is still a lot of engineering and work to do that, but it is easier than making sure all of the components work together.

Dear Mr Savage's I have sat and listen to you speak on all a group of points from people that watch you on TV, and it gives us a good point on how think, I now belive you are a real person with a great home life with your wife and kid. I wish I had the same in my life, it because of me I did a bad job in my life, but this is not about me this is about you and your people in your live and how you did you work and loved your people and the great time you all had, I hope to see more of you and your thing you make please do a project with you and you kid even you hide that thy are your Kids. the bearded old man
