Ask Adam Savage: Those Scripted MythBusters Blueprint Segments

In this "Ask Adam Savage" segment, Adam answers Tested Patron Solbury's question, "The blueprint segments at the head of each episode (where you or Jamie explain the myth to each other) always felt distinctly different than anything else. How did you navigate having such a heavily-scripted segment integrated in an otherwise 'real' show?" Thank you for your support and question, Solbury! To me Mythbusters was a childhood staple, anytime I would hear the intro on the big old silver CRT, I'd come running to my favorite spot on the couch (between the cushions). One time my mom put a suggestion on the suggestion board for the drafting a truck episode and it was done in the following season. It was a show that fueled my curiosity and taught me that without empirical evidence there is no truth. That and How It's Made.

When TV ‘personalities’ (at 107/8% or whatever) need to go on RU-vid to find an audience, the only thing we learn for sure is that a whole lot more people have finally woken up to just how fake TV is, and how redundant the entire concept truly is. I figured this out in 2012, about two decades too late. If you cannot hold people’s attention by just being yourself, then don’t bother trying. Plenty of others can. Enough already with this fakery

I began watching Mythbusters when the first episode aired when I was 14. The day the final episode aired, my wife was shocked that I was bawling my eyes out as the episode ended. Literally half my life existed with this show in it. I went to engineering school because of it. I will forever be grateful and can't wait for my kids to be old enough to enjoy it. I met you guys at Michigan Tech, chilling beer with an extinguisher, and will always cherish that. When the news broke about Grant, I was in tears again. Jamie's dry humour was always a highlight of Mythbusters. Adam I wonder if you could investigate a very early version of your show that was shot in Australia. This format allows for thoughtful responses. He had to make a few decisions in that moment, in particular: what context does the audience potentially need before he can fully answer the question? I used to hang out at this pub which had a regular open mic event, and I remember someone telling me that performing music was about "jumping out of your skin", so I think I hear what you are saying about artistic performance or even just public presentation being a very active and focused exertion. I still tend not to ever perform musically in front of anyone else, but for the sake of my personal entertainment, that advice has served me really well. You don't sing half-assed, and it won't do to whisper it or mumble it as if you're timid or shy. You're supposed project and fill the room.

I'm not much of an artist, I'm a techie, so I'm still struck by the novelty of receiving artistic insight or illumination from another person. It's strange the occasional phrase that resonates with you and it has this magical quality that ends up informing you in some deep way, or motivating you to expand limits. What the heck does it mean to "jump out of your skin?" Well, it means something useful, clearly. I had another friend who told me to just get up and start performing because you'll never be good enough in your own mind no matter what, and I can see what that means, I just don't have much in the way of courage for boring people with mediocre performances.

Because it's technically "acting", and everyone thinks they can until they're on the spot. Adam's right, morning show presenters, and just actors in general often have to pump out many different things in a day and generate excitement and humour for each one, even if they're unconnected. It's real exhausting work if you're not used to it. Watch the Steam Cannon intro and look how hard Adam is working.

I remember it being on there at one point and it was the most confusing thing because it was in some crazy random order with only a few (nonconsecutive) seasons worth represented and completely out of order. Still watched all of those ones at the time, but I'd much rather see the full series organized correctly and put on a streaming service.

It's so easy to find celebrities that went downhill after leaving TV, whether sad and washed up or still vying for attention. You are absolutely not one of those people. You seem just as optimistic and creative now as you were all those years ago, and these videos don't feel like an attempt to stay relevant. It's more like a check-in with a relative you haven't seen in a while, where you get to hear fun stories and see what they've been up to. Keep up the great work :)

As an introvert I heavily relate. In some of the jobs I've worked I felt pushed to more than 200%. I am the most quiet and solitary person anyone in my life knows(99% introvert MBTI). So in order to work well in a completely extroverted role I found that I needed to strategically drink 8-12 cups of coffee throughout the day to maintain my energy. This is an interesting element of professionalism that I think is easily overlooked. Great insight!

It is interesting to me that you evaluate *this* YT show as about 108% (of your resting state) vs those Blueprint segments as 120%. I really enjoy these YT offerings but, not to take away from my full enjoyment of Mythbusters, those Blueprint segments were the hardest part to get through. Indeed; I was going through some things during that time and they no doubt affected my levels of involvement. Mythbusters was a really neat triple-point of tech creativity/intelligence/TV production. I really do appreciate this, right here, the more "you" version of you "performing" on this venue. You say less, I say it's closer to you being you.

At first I'm like "man imagine how fun your job is if you absolutely dread having to do what's normally the entire job on other TV shows, and we still fantasize about being on TV" then he describes it and I realize that's my nightmare. Having to force a bunch of excitement when there's actual fun creative stuff to do instead, having to smile.. when my usual performance is trying to stay subdued, not trip up, appear very calculated and calm.. god. I dont know if it makes it better or worse, but the blueprints stuff, the clearly forced jokes, basically all of the reality show trappings.. they did nothing for me and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. What made Mythbusters great was just watching everyone do what they do and be genuine and be themselves.

If I may put some words into Adam's mouth, I think another thing that might made the blueprint segments tougher, is that you have to carry the whole scene by "yourself". In other words your performance is the only thing making that segment interesting, while when you are working in the shop there's explosions and things moving that help with making those parts interesting.

Funny. When I'm working on a big-scale music project, I usually write both the opening and closing songs last -- sometimes even working on ideas for them simultaneously -- and for pretty much the same reason. And as for difficult bits... any job has some moments when it feels like... a job. No matter how much of a dream job it is. Heck, even hobbies can feel like that sometimes!

Physiologically speaking, lying is an exhausting endeavor for humans. We suck at it and we have to put our whole mind to it, to control our voice, our facial muscles, everything. Acting, unwillingly, is essentially lying but for a day straight. I can only imagine how exhausting physically and mentally that must've been.

I describe this giving of 120% to work colleagues as dialling yourself up, its you, but just more of you. Like concentrated screenwash over the ready to use stuff. I have noticed a few teachers relating and as a university lecturer, 100% there with you guys! A lecture is a performance, you know your script, you hit your marks and when its not the normal delivery it can really throw some teachers!

That reminds me of when I worked as a doorguy on Bourbon St. I often tell people the hardest part of the job was to seem fun and exciting to people all the time. Even if I was tired, sick, or hungover I had to pretend I was happy to be there, and make people think our club was an awesome place where everyone wants to party all the time. It was even harder if someone causing a problem while other people were deciding if they want to come in. It's not easy flipping the switch back and forth between happy, fun doorguy to serious, scary bouncer.
