When it comes to sports it’s special because although we’re all playing the same game we each take different things from it and get to experience life as an athlete all differently, all at the same time. In the end we all have a story of the journey, and individually when it’s over we all have to sit back and live with the question, did we receive what we ultimately wanted out of it and decide are you content with it. Today’s feature after college had a pro career that lasted 4 years before he became many things like a school teacher, basketball skills trainer for boys and girls, motivational speaker and tennis coach. He even had an NFL tryout with the Cincinnati Bengals to see if his insane athleticism could transfer over to the field when the hardwood court rejected it. Melvin Levette was the 54th overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft selected by the Detroit Pistons and soon traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, who released him before he could play a minute in the league. It may not have been a lot, but it was an opportunity and for these reasons Melvin Levett never got to play in the NBA. Asked The Lakers To Release Him Then That Was It! Melvin Levett | Stunted Growth

I played against him in high school our coach talked about him like he was Godzilla when we played he had about 17 points he played for Cleveland st joes , he got that hype and reputation for Dunking he didn’t do a lot more than that no jumper that I can recall it was all plays around the rim , he was bigger than all of us and that was his edge , they beat us (Mercyhurst prep) by about 12 points The following week he jumped over a kid named Keith Neis who tried to take a charge Dunked on him ugly , wasn’t a real threat beyond Dunking , no disrespect to him he did his thing in college mostly dunks tho Under no circumstances was he a point no way no how

Yea everyone just seemed to catch up to him physically. I know so many guys like that. Advanced before their time then other players catch and surpass them. I never understand though why coaches don’t see how their players won’t translate because of things like being out of position and don’t even try to do something about it. Anyone could see that would hurt him in the long run. Or maybe they just don’t care outside what could help their program.

Melvin Just needed more fundamental ball handle counter moves to sell his head inshoulder punk fake 1dribble drive blow by hard slash to the basket game or catch and shoot or 1dribble spot up jumshot from slightly outside. 🤔 u right about him playing to far off the ball ,almost like a small forward swingman type player

When Melvin was a freshman in college I was a freshman in HS. He was known as an explosive athlete who could dunk well. I could touch a 10 foot rim at age 15. I wore #21 just like Melvin. I remember him as that. An explosive jumper/dunker. He was so fun to watch.

I remember watching Melvin. It's amazing that he would make it to the league and not look to evolve. Even if he learned to play the point, he would still get the opportunity to fly through the air and dunk the ball which is what he was known for.

Out of all of Melvin Levitt's high flying dunks, the one @ 5:18 is by far my favorite one, and I still have it on VHS. I saw it live on ESPN, as it was from a game against UNLV, during the 98-99 season. It's possibly the greatest putback dunk I've ever seen, with Nate Robinson's putback dunk against NC State, while he was playing for Washington, being a close second...

@Stunted Growth Great video as always. Those Cincinnati Bearcats were fun to watch back in those days. Levett is a prime example of when someone as POWERFUL as Jerry West is with his critique about a player, it could make or break you, it definitely broke Levett. Levett was VERY selfish. There were games I remember watching when Bob Huggins would be on his ass & Levett made it worse by doing the same stuff Huggins told him to slow down on

Coaches do this all the time. Have you playing the 2 because you’re a combo instead of the one. Especially in that era. Then having a less than average three point shot definitely kills you at the nba level. I just transferred my son after his freshmen year of college because he over 60 coach was trying to do him that way. Sure scoring 30 is nice but no bigger schools are looking for a 5’10 shooting guard. Especially one in most who watched was better than your actual point guard at all phases. Melvin should have transferred but because he couldn’t see himself as a pro or didn’t develop immediately stayed. Still made it though so props there. It’s still the mountain top so to speak for most players, or that 95% you spoke of.
