I work at a startup that’s just started to beta-test. This was the best resource I’ve found, so far, on how to interview users.

"What are you trying to learn?" - Great advice as a foundation question and best place to start when doing research :)

Some great insight here about how to ask good questions in an interview scenario. While this video is specifically about app feedback, you can use your noggin to translate this to other areas.

Thank you very much for this, I got more questions now haha, for example, if I have an hypothesis about a problem I want to solve, how can I ask them to tell me if this is a problem for them too without telling them directly, I will write down an example: Let´s suppose I want to create a food delivery app. Now, I want to know if slow delivery is a real problem but I don´t want to ask them something like "What do you think about delivery time in restaurants?" but if I ask them "What do you think restaurants in the zone need to improve?" maybe they just don´t mention the delivery because it´s a specific topic, or this would mean that delivery is not a problem?

Asking about something like "What was most frustrating about the last time you ordered food?" This will draw out multiple scenarios perhaps but if there is a real issue with slow delivery users will state it without leading them as its a real problem. Focus more on tasks in what people are trying to achieve. In terms of problem discovery its good to have a hypothesis assumption like We feel like users are frustrated with delivery times. So lets ask ourselves, what happens as they order, when do they order, why? It's understandable to want to know specific problems that may provide direct app solutions, however investigating real user needs may provide more valuable information. Hope this helps.

Hello Stephen, thank you for your answer, it makes a lot of sense, I think you are right, instead of focusing on the problem I should focus on the task and get insights from it

great video! 5'34 if you don't ask them this, how to invite them to slow down and discover problems?

Not sure if anyone can answer this here. I am planning to redesign a website that I recently came across. The site is related to purchasing Music instruments from the shop. While trying to shop from the site using my mobile, I actually got frustrated and gave up the thought of purchasing the instrument. In fact, it made me angry as well. Now I don't know the owners to persuade them to redesign the website and provide a very easy and friendly experience to the user. However, I have still decided to redesign the website and provide a solution that will benefit the users and the owners both. I have no interest in earning money from this project but I definitely want to earn experience and create a value. The point is this is not a corporate stuff. So how do I go about it? I will be working solo on this as the UX and UI designer. But I want to run through the entire process of user researching as well and would like to understand how to execute it and what will be my steps after that. I liked this video and I will be purchasing the book as well as suggested.

Plenty of insight on what *not* to do, and why so. These pointers to what to do come from 5:55. books.google.de/books?id=tDS9mQEACAAJ www.gv.com/lib/get-better-data-from-user-studies-16interviewing-tips vimeo.com/7099570

5:38 Say I'm at the screen/wireframe and they aren't getting past it or "logging in" what do I do?
@NimitBhargava

Remove the "logging in" part. Give them incentive to log in. Usually you can prompt the user to login when it is required.

Depending on the situation, you can ask what they are trying to do and where they are trying to do it from (for example - if they are looking around for the log in button... where were you looking for it/expect it to be? Which points are the 'natural' points for it)... or in some situations, you can say, to log in, press there... what do you think of that? then they can explain what they think about it's placement or how clear it is that they need to do it.
