My brother was taken off his PLAVIX after 15 years of being on it, 3yrs passed and he had a massive heart attack, the heart attack lasted 3days. When he first had a stent placed in his heart, the doctor told him he would be on the PLAVIX FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE…beware of false studies…they are all over the internet and some of them even make it into the hospitals.

I was taking plavix for 4 yrs as i had high platelet. In January this year, i had to check my antibody for covid vaccine n taken out blood from my arm. After taking blood, nurse put the plaster on the place where blood taken at my arm. When i got into my car, i found that there was bleeding from the plaster. So i was afraid that i had blood thinner. Then i stopped taking clopidogel since January without consulting doctor. So pls advise me whether i should take it again. Thanks a lot.

Hello Dr Pool - Can you refer me to any studies that show a new endothelial layer grows over the popular drug-eluting coronary stent (Orsiro by Biotronik) because I had one placed last July and want to learn more. Thank you.

Thanks for your question. It is a bit of a slog to read due to dense biochemical jargon, but here is a study that explores how long DAPT should be used after stent: Pharmacol Res. 2015 Mar; 93: 22-27. Endothelialization of Drug Eluting Stents and its Impact on Dual Anti-platelet Therapy Duration Anwer Habib, MD and Aloke V. Finn, MD God bless you!

Hello you have cleared up my question, could you tell me the reason why beta blockers might be prescribed with these thinners ?
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment. Beta blockers work on the beta receptors to decrease the blood pressure and heart rate. They are considered a mainstay of current therapy for heart disease. So a patient who needs Aspirin or Plavix for his/her heart disease will often likely also benefit from a beta blocker. But beta blockers and anti-platelet agents (Aspirin/Plavix) do not have a synergistic effect to my knowledge; that is, they do not combine to create a new or heightened or magnified effect. It's just that patients with heart disease often are prescribed both types of medications.

I have been on plavix and low dose asprin for a year and a half for stent placement. I am having stomach issues for a second time while on plavix, gastritis and ulcers. Doctor whants me to go off plavix and stay on 81mg asprin . I am scared to go off but she says the pavix is not helping anymore it did its job and just take the asprin now. what do you think?
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment. I cannot really comment on the particulars of your case but I agree that Plavix is not usually needed beyond 1 year after a new stent is placed. I think most doctors would recommend stopping it at 1.5 years, especially if the patient is having gastric problems. It does seem good to stay on the baby Aspirin. God bless you!

My husband had triple bypass surgery 2 years ago. His cardiologist said he would have to take it forever. Well, the VA screwed up in renewing his prescription so he’s been out of it for 3 days. But, he seems to be in a much better mental state. So, I’m just wondering, could be just take it 3 or 4 days out of 7? The bottle states he can not miss a dose. Just wondering what to do? Is he safe without it? Help! Btw, he also takes the 81 mg aspirin as well. Thanks in advance.
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd 3 года назад
Hi. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. I can't answer your questions too specifically, since I am not caring for your husband in a professional sense. That being said, I would advise you to ask the cardiologist to explain the rationale for him taking Plavix indefinitely. He might possibly need Plavix for a different reason. If he is only on it bc he had bypass surgery, then I myself do not recommend it for my patients. And I certainly do not think it has a benefit at 2 years after bypass. So he is generally safe to not take Plavix, as long as he is not taking it for another reason. It is possible to take Plavix only 3 or 4 days out of the week, but that may create inconsistent levels of activity, which is not ideal. It is generally taken as all-or-nothing. Hope this helps!

I have a history of bleeding ulcers, once in which I had a major duodenal bleed. My HGB went from 16 to a 6 🥺. I'm on plavix and an asa for next 6 months post LLA Amulet placement, similar to the Watchman. No epithelial tissue could possibly grow across the opening of the Left Atrial Appendage where this filter has been placed inside. The best is the healing of the complete edges into the epithelial tissue and covering by same tissue. This filter will prevent blood clots from leaving the appendage. This is used for Atrial Fibrillation patients. Then I don't need to be on blood thinners after the six months.

I've been on Xarelto since November 2022, and Now Plavix since January I, 2023. I'm having heartburn most every night and it's not a good sign. I don't have any problems on the Xarelto. But I had major bladder problems on both, as if I had a UTI, with frequency, urgency and painful urination. Negative for UTI. I'm going onto ASA. Not to worry I'm calling MD in am. I've had hx of bleeding Ulcers and. Major one leaving me with a hgb of 6. Not wanting that to happen again.

Dear doctor. I had a stent inserted three months ago. I also take 100 mg of Aspirin as part of my therapy. I was told that forever. I am worried because I have frequent subcutaneous bleeding on my body due to Aspirin. Can you give me some advice what to do. Thank you for your video contribution.
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd Год назад
Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. I can't really give a lot of advice since I don't have medical details about your particular case but most doctors would recommend Aspirin indefinitely after a stent. I would recommend mentioning your concern to your cardiologist and see what he/she says about it. The way I think of it, everything in health care is a balance of risks and benefits. So, the Aspirin is generally low risk and the risk of a problem with the stent is higher, but if you have problematic bruising and the risk or injury from that becomes greater than the risk of the stent going bad, then you could possibly stop. But I would definitely keep taking aspirin until your physician says to stop. Thanks and God bless you!

Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. Yikes! Sorry to hear about your experience. Sounds like you were in a life-threatening situation. Thank God you made it through. I appreciate your perspective. Aspirin and Plavix taken together can set up a situation where bleeding can be problematic. I would always advise people to seek the guidance of their personal physician when it comes to their medications. Yet even with the best advice, sometimes terrible situations arise. Thanks and God bless!

Hi , my father recently had chest pain and after having Angiography doctor had mentioned that he had 1 mirror blocks but not seriously issue .. only had mirror block in ending part of heart .. but doctor had given him clopidogrel bisulfate tablet 75 mg to be taken .. I am not sure how long to take it ? I am too worried as my dad has gastric problem previously .. is this medicine will effect my father ? Can my father stop taking this medicine after 6 to 12months .. please help me Sir
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment! I can't really make a particular medical recommendation to you on this forum. I would recommend your father see his personal physician again and ask about how long he should be on Plavix. Most patients are on Plavix for at least 6-12 months when Plavix is started for this reason (coronary disease). I'm not sure about the gastric problems but it is possible for stomach ulcers to become more of a problem if a patient is on Plavix. Once again, I would recommend seeking counsel from your father's physician to figure out if it is an issue for him. God bless your father's health!

I had a triple by-pass in October 2019. I am still taking plavix after my doctor wanted to switch me to 325mg aspirin. I read a very alarming article about what can happen if you stop taking plavix. It scared me so much so that I was afraid to stop the plavix. I called my cardiologist and he said to stay on the plavix. Doctor Pool, can you elaborate on the dangers of stopping the use of plavix ? Aspirin is also very hard on the stomach and liver.
@jmarkpoolmd
@jmarkpoolmd 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. I can't comment on your particular care. But if Plavix is working for you, by all means keep taking it. Usually it is not needed after bypass surgery unless the patient had a heart attack. So, there are not typically any dangers in stopping Plavix after bypass surgery, particular roughly 2 years later. But if you are not having any side effects from it, then it sounds like a good option for you. Thanks and God bless!

Taking clopidogrel as a preventative against the risk of clots seems to be a long-term or life-long requirement. I take it for unstable angina, and apart from preventing angina it also prevents the possibility of a stroke. Like you, i'd ignore the doctor if it were suggested that the treatment should stop... It's relatively harmless (if no side-effects) and can be got online without prescription.
