@@MrGMoney1944 No Controversy there. I replayed Unity recently and while it had bugs and the usual pointless collectibles, the city looks spectacular and the game world feels really nice. Sandbox nature of the missions are great too. Unity refined could have been amazing, and now we're stuck with Odyssey.

Still one of my favorite AC games. The co-op was clunky but really fun. The story was hackey but of the hackey AC stories and tropes I think this one does it best.

I've got a suggestion for an AC game: World War One. You're a Serbian rebel (and member of the assassins) who was tricked by Templars into killing Franz Ferdinand, and so has been forced by your order to atone for your mistake. You alternate your time between sandboxing in various international cities around Europe, and fighting in the trenches, where your goal is to sneak behind enemy lines and personally introduce them to the painful end of a trench spike. In the final twist, the young German soldier who you spare from such a fate is actually Adolf Hitler, who is driven to revenge against the assassins, kick-starting World War Two. Sorry, I've had that idea rattling around my brains since I finished AC2. I just had to get it out there.

Normally I would say that an assassination attempt on Hitler in the WW1 trenches would be Jumping The Shark, but this series jumped the shark back in AC2 when the game ends with you fist-fighting the Pope and meeting aliens.

not being able to use the hidden blade is a huge deal breaker for me, like seriously, who the fuck at ubisoft thought it would be a good idea to limit the abilities of their most iconic weapons from one of their most popular franchises... the controls on pc are also seriously inconsistent, if you wanna do a leap of faith the game tells you to press w, shift, and e to jump into the hay, which works, but so does w and space, which means at one point i was chasing down a guy in the game and while i was free running mr. master assassin randomly decided to jump into the damn hay...

I think as Assassin's Creed game in which *you* choose which targets to kill, and those choices lead to you being affiliated with the assassins, the templars, or you're just a rogue assassin with your own agenda, would be a much welcomed addition to this seeming never-ending series of games.

Oh hell yeah, I'd love to have my own character make moral decisions that affect the outcome of history! (and it's just an animus simulation so, like the AC:III DLC it could all just be a "what if?" scenario) and having your character choose their own targets and allegiance's, which could affect what weapons and mission tactics you use and also what historical figures you ally with, could add a lot of replayability.

I think you hit the nail on the head with "This is all fairly solid stuff, but solid stuff on a wonky table will nonetheless collapse". If they had given it a few more months to fix the bugs and improve the combat and free running, rather than simply trying to get in for Christmas, then I think 80% of people's problem with the game would vanish. It's got a decent story, it's going back to making the assassinations more creative and letting you do them how you want to, and the co-op is at least an interesting feature. The only major gripes left would be the endless content you have to buy even after you have the game, but that's nothing new with Ubisoft.

@yanipheonu
@yanipheonu 9 лет назад
My main problem is, well, the main gameplay stuff is getting dry. Proper character action games like Bayonetta offer FAAAR better combat. MGS or, hell, even Far Cry do stealth better. The free running is ok, but after so many years, it's getting old, and frankly, some games are starting to do it better. The pirate ships added some new life, but such things are gone from this entry. It's mostly that I picked up Far Cry 4, Dragon Age. Inqusition, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Smash Bros 4 the same week as this game. And I'd much rather play all of those. Even an annualized series like COD has that twitch gaming community that draws people in. Assassin's Creed really doesn't have that many compelling gameplay hooks. At the very least there needs to be a major combat overhaul. It's waaaay too easy, and has been since the first one.
@BoySamusMetroid
@BoySamusMetroid 9 лет назад
The controls and mechanics are still absolutely nowhere near where they need to be for a third-person stealth/action game. There are finally designated cover and sneak buttons (GREAT!), but they're both incredibly finicky and don't work like you'd expect them to (I /really/ can't turn corners in cover?). Recent additions have improved both stealth and combat, two major ones being whistling, to attract guards, and human shield, to deal with gun-toting enemies. And now they go and bloody remove them?! The cherry bombs do fuck-all to attract guards, and what do you expect me to do, Matrix-dodge the bullets? The combat is okay, aside from the fact that you lose way too much health way too fast in comparison to previous titles. I like that the medicine mechanic is back, as opposed to regenerating health, but two hits removing all of my health is a bit much, don't you think? Especially from enemies the same level as me? It begins to feel like a ploy to get you to partake in all of the microtransactions to get better gear. There are a significant amount of good things about the game, but the basic mechanics of the series need a serious reworking.

BoySamusMetroid 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Why is it that they always seem to remove gameplay mechanics that made the previous games good? Not just AC, but videos games in general. The main problem i had with unity was the bugs and the false advertising. Join the revolution they said. You're fighting for France they said. When in actual fact your character tries his hardest to stop the revolution while the templars try to start it, giving me the weird feeling that now im the bad guy.
@TitaniumDragon
@TitaniumDragon 5 лет назад
The revolutionaries murdered tens of thousands of people. They didn't call it the terror for nothing. The French Revolution was really awkward and not all that nice, and was full of extremist fanaticism because it was run by people like Danton and Robespierre instead of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. I mean, they said they were for the rights of man, but I'm not sure that chopping people's heads off in kangaroo courts over political differences is really a good example of such. It took the French a few tries before they actually figured shit out.

thomas brady I knows its infuriating, there were characters I actually liked, but they either dropped off at a point, or they got rid of them in really lame ways. And yet that game had some of the most impressive architecture of the series, and on the other hand they took away key features like whistling and dodging. Dodging bullets basically broke down to running in a circle hoping you don't get caught on terrain. The game isn't terrible, but they fumbled the ball hard.

I never understood the hate for the "modern day" portions of the game. They're usually not very long. And it's a nice break from the same old scenery and time-period stuff. I actually enjoy it in most of the AC games. Though I liked it a bit more in AC4 than others. It was a nice break from the normal running around stabbing things. I could relax for a few minutes and look around for easter eggs and collectible things. Then, when I was done, go straight back into the main game. I mean, sure. I don't play AC for the modern day stuff. Most people don't. But it's not gonna kill you to play a 5 minute section of the game.

Ok, I love assassins creed, all of them, every single one, but I'm no fanboy, ubisoft is ruining one of my favorite game franchises, I didn't even get hyped for ac unity, I intentionally avoided all trailers for it, but to no avail, it still sucked. so I have here a list of ideas to make assassins creed great again. 1: no more yearly releases, instead try to space them out between 2-5 years, for maximum development time. 2: longer story, the story in ac unity was so short and un-memorable, i literally forgot everything the next day, so try and make memorable missions. And try to achieve 13-20 sequences. 3: unique characters: ever since ezio, they have been using him as a template for characters ever since, well, ever since Connor kenway was a bore. 4: actual q and a testing: make sure you games run great, optimize them, don't worry if you don't have max graphics, just keep the frame rate smooth. 5: non predictable story/ unrevealing trailers: the story to ac unity was so predictable that it was funny, not took me by surprise, no death made me feel anything. This also happened with watch dogs too, in one of their trailers, aiden was talking about Clara and how he can't trust her, that right there told me, Clara did something major to widen that hurt him, so it took me by no surprise that she helped kill aides niece. So try and keep the story out of the trailers. These should put ubisoft on the right track. Unfortunately, they will never see this, or put in consideration because I'm a nobody.

The next one has been leaked it's set in Victorian London and is called Assassin's Creed: Victory (I really hope that's not the final title because it's shit). It's not feudal Japan but to me it still sounds like a pretty cool setting unless they get all the voice actors to try and sound like characters from Oliver Twist.

Yahtzee, you should try AC Rogue, I quite enjoyed the gameplay (similar to Black Flag but slightly improved) and what I really enjoyed was the story. How they portrayed the Templars and their cause and how the Assasins have their issues is a fresh look at the lore of the franchise, a more realistic view rather than the Assassin good Templar bad that was the norm

Assassin's Creed Unity was the last straw for me. I bought it on PC, realised it's unplayable at ANY graphics setting, tried to fix it for 4 hours, realised they fucked up so bad there is no fix for the issue I had, and tried to return the game but couldn't. I was so upset I've never bought an Assassin's Creed game since. I recently went back to Unity on PC and IT'S STILL BROKE AS FUCK! They didn't even bother fixing their broken game! Now whenever I feel like playing an Assassin's Creed game, I just go back and play Black Flag. Ubisoft can't have anymore of my money, they don't deserve it.

yeah yahtzee pretty much nailed it, the climbing in particular is ESPECIALLY wonky, as he pointed out it somehow seems worse in unity than in any other game. one thing he didn't mention is how limited your options are in this game as they have stripped out a ton of your arsenal. I can see why some might find revelations to have been a bit absurd with all the tools at your disposal but black flag managed stripped it down a bit and still did great, in this game you feel comparatively unequipped after 5 games of getting enough tools to make inspector gadget drool in envy.

He is the AC version of Navi "hey listen" but she was way more helpful. running on rooftops is punished way too harshly it became annoying so i found myself running and horse riding more than anything, Well is not like parkour is a big selling point for AC right? right?. I'm a big AC fan so for me they are like pizza even the bad ones i can find some sort of joy in them but AC3 was bad! in comparison to AC2 and Brotherhood and i didn't even speak things about Desmond. @imaloony8
@imaloony8 8 лет назад
Just finished Unity and it is garbage. Worse than Rogue, worse than 3, do not play this game, especially if you're an AC fan. It'll make you rage at how idiotic their design choices were. The combat is the worst that AC has ever seen it (Yes, worse than 1), they fucked up the free running by trying to compromise between Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed 4's free running games, the stealth is awful and guards seem to be infinitely more perceptive than they've ever been. Oh, and it's full of shitty RPG elements so right out of the gate even the wimpiest guards can 3-shot you. You need to buy new weapons and armor all the time or else you're completely and utterly fucked. Even so, combat isn't easy because the camera is lodged up your ass for the duration of it and it barely gives you a prompt when an enemy off-screen (Read: All of the enemies) wind up for an attack. The combats themselves feel like a grind because your tools have been hilariously limited. You can no longer use your hidden blade in combat or your bare hands (So no disarming enemies and killing them with their own weapon). You can use a rifle, but if you do, you don't get a pistol and your rifle is also your melee weapon. Otherwise you can have a melee weapon and a pistol, you have the Phantom Blade (Basically just the Blow Gun/Air Rifle from 4/Rogue) and some useless bomb weapons. And I swear to god that every fucking assassin ability is an unlock that you need to spend synchronization points on. Double Assassination? Gotta unlock it. Oh, Double Air Assassination is ANOTHER unlock (And you need to be past Chapter 5 for either of them). USING A RANGED WEAPON WITHOUT BUYING THE ABILITY? Are you mad? Sorry, can't blend into crowds without buying that ability. THE ABILITY TO TUCK AND ROLL AFTER JUMPING FROM HIGH UP IS A FUCKING UNLOCK. You can certainly stab a downed enemy in combat, but it won't be an execution until you buy another ability (This one doesn't unlock until chapter 10. And it's expensive)! This game is a fucking mess. It was still fairly buggy, and I'm playing it more than a year after it was released! The game just feels so bad and clunky that I find it hard to believe that anyone actually tested this. So many of the missions are poorly designed and frustrating, and in general the game is just a pain in the ass. Hey, remember in AC1 when enemies would eventually get suspicious just by you being nearby? Yeah, well that's back. Certain groups of enemies will start harassing you if you do high profile actions in their sight (you know, like RUNNING). Stick around for too long and they'll attack for basically no reason. Even just getting too close to them can piss them off. What's worse is that they can completely fuck you on missions because they'll come after you even if you're not in a restricted area. It makes the game feel so much more restricted and annoying. Anything good? Well, Paris looks as good as you'd imagine it to be, I generally like Arno (Yahtzee's right that he's basically just Ezio 2.0, but that's not really a bad thing) and I think his romance with Elise is believable; they have some serious chemistry, and both of them can be really funny. And the assassination missions where you just have a big sandbox and get to approach the target how you like? That's a really good idea and lends itself to be played through multiple times... if I could stomach the rest of the game more than once. This game was actually fucking painful to play through. I haven't been that angry playing a game in a very, very long time. Don't play Unity. Even if you're an AC fan, it's just not worth it. Hell, I got this game for $10 and I'm regretting it. It really is that bad.
@imaloony8
@imaloony8 8 лет назад
Joe A. Verage Back to its roots? I played Assassin's Creed 1 and I loved it. This is not Assassin's Creed roots, this is EA seeing how many RPG elements they can crowbar into Assassin's Creed and then how much they can get away with charging players for. You claim that this isn't an action game despite the gigantic arsenal of unlockable weapons they stick in front of you and the missions where you have no choice but to fight. I didn't have much problem with the actual stealth. Methinks someone is projecting a little bit. Running up and slaughtering a dozen guards isn't the problem, it's usually just killing a few. Starting an open fight with two or three guards should not be this much of a hassle. The higher level enemies have a retarded amount of health. How is that the roots of Assassin's Creed? I recall earlier Assassin's Creed games where stabbing someone with a sword would make them dead. That's not even counting that the camera is fighting you the whole time and never pulls out enough to show you when you should be countering. And once again, why is the game holding key abilities locked in its fun chest until I get most of the way through the game or grind through missions? God forbid I can use a feature that has been in the games since Assassin's Creed 2. If you think that Ubisoft can do no wrong, you're deluding yourself and blind to criticism. This game was pretty universally panned. I don't care if you like playing it, more power to you, but don't shoot down my opinions just because they don't align with your perfect views of Ubisoft and EA.
@imaloony8
@imaloony8 8 лет назад
Joe A. Verage Yes I suppose it would help if I stopped sacking at games. Here I am being told to assassinate people when all I can do is put them in bags. What's wrong with me? Here's the jist: The game isn't hard, but it's constantly making things harder than they have to be. Not intentional raising of the difficulty, but poor design that makes the game difficult. See: my complains about how shitty the camera is. Of course I understood when you're supposed to hit counter, but that didn't help when the game's camera was hanging around way too close during combat, making it impossible to see an attack until it was too late. None of the other AC games had this problem; they helpfully pulled the camera away during combat so you could see everything. I really have no idea what you're on about that I have yet to point out any of Unity's problems. Go read my initial post without all of that fanboy-rage clouding your vision and you'll see that I pointed out plenty of problems with the game. I imagine you wouldn't be so mad at me if I hadn't pointed out any of the game's problems so either you're lying or you're trying to use your rage to change the fabric of reality. I'm not going to bother continuing with this conversation. It's clear that you're tuning out everything I say so that you can stand up on your soapbox and continue to defend your precious game. It actually doesn't matter what I say; I bet I could start agreeing with you and you'd still manage to find some issue with how I'm agreeing with you. So take this as a victory if you want, I've ceased to care.

Personally I like the looks of Unity. The looks. The gameplay looks stale at best. Sure, what all the other Creeds have done were summarized in either counter killing or spamming, but it was fun nonetheless. in Unity, it tried to be more elegant. It nearly got there, too. But it's still boring watching anyone fight. Even more so doing the fight itself. So in the end I believe ubisoft should take more time with the next Creed. Because it's clear they're not going to stop. But it's also clear they're pulling a DICE and trying to get something cool out really quick.
@PraecoLumieres
@PraecoLumieres 9 лет назад
If you're interested in the swordfighting, the gameplay actually feels fairly different. It's not, but the minor changes have made it much more difficult (and, by extension, much more fun and rewarding to do). Regarding stealth, it's gotten worse.
@Shubdooba
@Shubdooba 9 лет назад
Your right about the stealth. However it's clear you have a more lenient view on the swordplay. Personally I just dont like it. New-Generation games are always on a smaller scale and have tech issues, though. It takes a few years before the developers are comfortable with the hardware and have had time to build bigger more complex games for it. Maybe Unity has enough problems to warrant criticism or even to be nigh unplayable (I don't have it, so I don't know), but I am tired of the early adopters complaining about being early adopters. Guess what, guys: the first year or two a console comes out, the previous one is still going to have more games and generally better games. Launch titles are rarely anything more than bloated tech demos. Accept it.

The story is ehh a more interesting story (which I'm sure is DLC) would be Arno with napoleon after the revolution because in unity the revolution never really affects the story like it should have yes there is a few times you use it to your advantage but it's not the center point like it should be. It's more like it's just going on while your investigating the death of your father in law. Then add on all of the other problems with the game and that's where I begin to fall off the series

RemnantTheCheese As a guy with a history degree, with a focus on the french revolution, I kind of have to disagree here. Their treatment of marquis de sade, citizen mirabeau and robespierre were quite an interesting take on the historical record, and not without merit. Napoleon was a bit out of place (although his personality, I felt, was spot on), and there is just enough historical interaction to sate my interest, while not getting ridiculous, like AC3 did.

I've just started playing Unity for the first time with all its patches and updates and fixes and I must say...at least NOW it is pretty great, I recommend people play it. It is pretty fun now that the breaks have been fixed, the map is small but STUFFED with so much detail and personality that I hardly noticed and the combat feels heavy and satisfying and for once...difficult! If you come up against more than 3 guys at a time you will probably die, which I LIKE, I always hated how the "assassins" in Assassins Creed games eventually became super humans who could single handedly kill a legion of fully armored guards with a six inch blade strapped to their wrist, complete nonsense. Also I find the missions themselves are fun and varied, the murder mysteries are some of the best missions in ANY AC game to date, and the actual assassination missions FINALLY go back to their roots and FEEL like assassinations. Its annoying that you can't kill main targets with anything but the hidden blade but honestly I kind of like that you can't use it in open combat at all. I like realism in my games, and it is realistic that NOBODY would be able to kill multiple people in open combat with such an ineffective, small, short range weapon that is literally stuck to their arm...they kept it real..its a stealth weapon used to slit throats and that is it, which I ended up liking. however, I didn't like that they completely took out daggers as a possible weapon class or that there isn't competitive multiplayer like in previous games, i LOVE assassins creed multiplayer. If you havent played this play it now, its been fixed and is to a point where I at least put it above assassins creed 3 and 4 and maybe revelations.

I agree. While I felt that the story and characters were forgettable, the combat is the best in any of the series so far. A pretty serviceable entry. Now that it's been patched up.

Well, I used to beat people half to death with my bare hands in brotherhood, the animation was utterly ridiculous, Ezio spun like a tea cup.

Well, it's your opinion, both fans and critics responded positively to IV and Rogue is getting pretty good responses but AC:U is the worst in the series so far from what I've seen.

Initially, the Animus(tm) framing device made sense. It added depth to the story with a big ol' slow burn conspiracy theory sub-plot that raised the stakes by giving the whole game some relevance to the modern world and had the manners to wrap itself up in a convenient trilogy (more or less). Now, that framing device is thoroughly spent, but it still hangs around like John Cleese's dead pet Albatross and I can't really figure out why. It's like someone at Ubisoft who is paid a lot more money than me is worried that we'll be bored of the history in his historical fiction or that we'll be unable to distinguish between fiction and reality if we don't have an occasional reminder, and might try diving off the nearest skyscraper into a nearby bail of hay. There's no longer a promise of 2012 apocalyptic climax, no longer a threat of imminent death from a vengeful Sun, just a flow-shattering "hey, Templars and Assassins here, still doing our thing, catch you later, ciao" done in a series of ham-handed sequences of Ubisoft reminding me it can turn this game of alternate history ninja into an office-temp job simulator whenever it bloody feels like unless I pay them back that loan.

despite all the negativity surrounding the game I think this is easily the series best since they ran Ezio into the ground. I can't really understand the complaint of world size shrinking as this is a vastly different game than Black Flag. Sure Black Flag had a larger world, but it was 80% Water and 20% small towns with the largest being about the size of one town from Altiar's adventures. Now I wouldn't say Black Flag was a bad game, but it certainly was a rather weak Assassin's Creed game. Unity is a good Assassin's Creed game. I also personally have been waiting for full interiors since AC3 so I'm pretty biased here. As for Arno being Ezio 2.0 I can't argue there, he is, but I would say that he's a more interesting character. He doesn't join the brotherhood because he believes in the cause, he merely does it because they can help him find the man he is looking for. Sure it's in his blood to be one, but his dick was also clearly in a Templar so it's more about two star-crossed lovers doing whatever it takes and working with whoever they have to to get back at a man who has caused them grief. As for all the sign up here shit it's pretty annoying and doesn't always work, but most of it can easily be overlooked. I really loved this game and despite all of it's bugs I think it's one of the years best right alongside Shadows of Mordor and Watch_Dogs.
