Spoiler warning. Was Assassin's Creed 1's 'Old Man of the Mountain', Al Mualim, the mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins, a sage? In this video we explore the reasons why this could be the case and why this might not be the case but ultimately, regardless of what I think, I want to know what you guys think!

In Revelations, Desmond's dad mentions that you need the correct DNA to weild the apple, so he would need to be a sage to weild it in Assassin's Creed 1

For one, Al Mualim should be spelt as Al Muallim for more accuracy. And quick Arabic lesson, Al Muallim is a noun which come from the verb "At Ta'leem" which literally means "to teach", therefore, Al Mualim to mean "The Teacher" isn't incorrect, and neither "The Mentor". Hope this clarifies.

Well, you're not (quite) correct... Sages, as an idea, were first introduced in AC3 when Juno told desmond about Aita, her husband.

So when one sage dies, does the Aita incarnation pass over to another person with high First Civilization blood when that person is born? Or it randomly picks up in someone at any point in their life? Thomas Kavanagh was a sage and he died (1706), after Bartholomew Roberts was born and in his 20s. Another sage.

Is it just me of does the concept of an Al Mualim assassins creed prequel game sound amazing.. I'm really surprised they haven't done it... He was a silver tongued devil and to this day I still believe him to be the best assassins creed antagonist.. I would love to delve into his history further and believe it would make for an amazing game where you could play as him.. perhaps even up to the point of the ending of assassins creed 1.. I doubt this idea will ever be used but I can still dream lol

I agree. Al Mualim and Rodrigo are, in my opinion, the best antagonists of the series. A prequel game would be cool for Al Mualim, with a novel for Rodrigo. I'd like to see Al Mualim as a younger man so we can see his fall to what he was in AC 1 with more concrete info on his cynical point of view. As for Rodrigo I'm thinking a novel kinda like Darth Plagueis by James Luceno, where the villain's setup and execution of goals is put into perspective. The first act where he is but a young cardinal that is climbing the ranks of the Templar Order and the church simultaneously increasing his power base, and learning various skills of his trade. The second act where we see his setup of the beginning of Assassin's Creed: Lineage when he encounters Giovanni for the first quarter, with the other 3/4 being when Ezio comes into play and the rest of AC II's events from his perspective. And the last act, the shortest, being of his rise to Papacy, his fall from Templar power, all the way to his death at Cesare's hands. I think it'd be interesting to examine the character from a more personal and focused viewpoint. Also his rise and fall kind of mirror Plagueis' with the difference being that Plagueis' usurper succeded where Rodrigo failed.

Great points. I could see Ubisoft confirming Al Mualim as a sage and explaining it by saying that the later characteristics of a sage were based on his character, heterochromia, double crossing, etc. Just because the idea wasn’t there initially, doesn’t mean it can’t be born from an original character.

I think that's a fifty-fifty The coincidences are numerous but I think that he is not a sage because Ubisoft probably wouldn't have thought of the concept back then But like I said that there are so many coincidences that Ubisoft can easily look back and declare Al-Mualam as a sage and rightly so

I don't think Al Mualim is a Sage. Remember what Bartholomew Roberts said: "A merry life and a short one, as promised. How well I know myself." This would mean that he, as Sage never got to get really old. Al Mualim, on the other hand, was nearly 60 years old when he died, which is a pretty long lifetime for the age he lived in.

Well, I think a sage can be that old in the time when Unity is set, and although it wasn't a young age (of course), it wasn't that rare. But back in the years when AC1 is set, age 60, i think, was pretty rare.

muallim was the templar who was tasked to control the creed. the tenth templar as far as we know in the first game who tried to stole one of the eden's pieces (the apple) from the templar brotherhood who were safeguarding it but when failed killed them all one by one. we also know this when robert de sable caught altair at the beginning of the game and sent his warning with him since he realized al muallim went rogue (because he saw the creed's attempt to steal the apple) ... not a sage not anything just a rogue templar

While al mualim’s eye color is unknown that’s not the only thing sages also have Anisocoria (different sized pupils in their eyes) in some photos al mualim does have a small pupil in one eye however we don’t know about his blind eye. He may not have been a sage but he did have a high degree of isu DNA since he was able to use the piece of eden without any problems

2 years late, but it's because it was a different Assassin from over 500 years later with the same name. It just means, "the Mentor" or "the Teacher". It is a title bestowed upon someone, not a name. He is based on the real historical figure of Rashid ad-Din Sinan or "the Old Man of the Mountain".

I don't think Al Mualim was a Sage. I think he was a good man corrupted by the Apple of Eden. The color gold can be very corrupting. And I noticed the misty eye when I first played AC: 1 and thought he was half-blind and still do. Now that I think of it Al Mualim might not have been a good man but I still think he was corrupted by the Apple of Eden, which shows how dangerous they can really be to regular humans.

i think the parts that draw people into this idea is the whole eye thing and his adeptness with the apple.in other words he has weird eyes like a sage and has a suspisos ammount of control and experince with the apple even for someone of his age. The eye thing can potentaly be explaned away by sages not being thought of yet so they didnt have any visual indicators to give to a "sage". The two things i find interesting about him are him still having his ring fingers despite it being tradition to have them cut off and him being an old mentor. That along with his advanced ability to use the apple makes me think that even if he was not a sage he likely had a life that might have been quite storyed.

Considering all the individual differences between people in the AC universe that vastly outstrips what is possible in the real world, we already need various degrees of Isu DNA in the population to make sense of it all. Meaning Al could have the stuff out of his ears just like Altair and still be no Sage. And suddenly the strongest piece of evidence falls away.

All Sages (I think) have a blue eye. Black Bart (Bartholomew Roberts) had a blue and green eye, Germain had a blue and red eye. I don’t know any more Sages. ._.

Your sages were not thought of back then aruent is very very weak. Looking at comics for ex a lot of things get retconned into a past event, so they dont necessarily have to make the idea years b4 they put it in place. The only thing they need to do is base the idea around a past event or character.

Yeah he definitely isn't a sage, especially since he got corrupt by the apple. I would imagine a sage would be able to use the piece of eden without corruption. The motive, as you explained, is also another reason. His wisdom comes from his own life experiences, not from sage memories. There isn't enough evidence, whether it was planned or not, for him to be a sage. They especially would have mentioned somewhere in the later games.

If you want a simpler explanation then look no further than AC: Rogue. Al Mualim couldve been an Assassin who, like all Templars, reached a realization. This could've happened during his youth during a mission or gradually as he aged and took on more assassinations. Like Shay Cormac during his assassidays we see that not every Assassin just blindly kills as their mentor commands but some would question. Al Mualim may have been one of these Assassins and instead of going about it like Shay's style in AC Rogue (rebel against the Assassin order) he sought to change things from within.

But Assassins Creed 1 takes place during the 3rd crusade which took place in 1207 so the game is set during the 13th century. But I mentioned the A.c. Unity Dead Kings thing because of how off it seemed to mention his name.

you're kinda r8! but AC series was indeed planned ahead, but only upto ac3 (the apocalypse approaching stuff). sages came in ac4, so they couldnt have made that up with al mualim. if they had, unity wouldn't have been a flop like it had been.

I don’t think Al Muslim was a Sage but he might possible could have been a progenitor of a future Sage if he even got a chance to have children. The what we saw in the first game could have signs of either be the decent of a Sage or an ancestor one might be slowly one the way

I'm not aware of anything to support actual reincarnation. Aita simply died but had his DNA infused in humans causing a rare few among their descendants to be born as clones of him. New individual each time, though carrying memories from the Isu era and a love for Juno.

i think yes he was for his attuide wasn't very assassin and heavily seeking control over his castle and masyef at all and he spoke that jesus used apple of eden to turn water into wine and in AC unity in the intels there was a sage at jesus time that would make sence how al mualim was sure that jesus used a piece of eden also altair burned al mualim body soti make sure that no "phantomes" of mualim return again also in black flag roborts requested from edward to destroy his body

They do have planned the ending for AC but they won't end the games just yet. They want to make as much money on the games as possible. The AC ending will come once AC isn't fun for the players anymore.

Rogue is after Black Flag, so you should be good. Remember evil god-bitch Juno? She put the DNA of her boyfriend into human subjects, programming it to create a clone of him every so often among their descendants. Bad guy of Black Flag is one, and due to being a clone they have more First Civ DNA in them than just about anyone, making them extremely dangerous.

AC was originally planned to end at 3. Any plot devices or points introduced after that was likely thought up during the production of Black Flag.
