Critically ravaged or not, I enjoyed this one. It’s a good atmospheric action thriller, and Banderas and Stallone both do great with their work. Stallone is calm and collected as Rath, and Banderas is wild and crazy as Bain. They’re opposites but fantastic all the same. I revisit it quite a bit, and it still holds up.

Saw this at the cinema in 1995 as part of a 4 feature movie marathon. The other films being Batman Forever, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory and finishing with Judge Dredd. First Stallone film I watched in a cinema, my introduction to the wonderful Julianne Moore and the slow paced build up of palpable tension as Banderas waits for Stallone to exit the bank alone in the stifling muggy heat drenched in sweat and needing to relive himself. Second best film about a career assassin waiting for his one shot after “Buddy Buddy”

I love this film, to me it's one of my favourite Stallone films. I think it's hugely underrated, the action is great, good comedy, and I disagree with your opinion on a lack of chemistry, I think there is great chemistry between Rath, Bain and Elektra.
@suchanhachan
@suchanhachan Год назад
Also, the only mistake they made was the ending. The scene you showed where Rath and Bain jokingly say goodbye should have been where the story ended, instead of Bain trying to kill them both and getting killed himself. This would have set up a variety of possible sequel scenarios...

This is a really good movie. The problem is that simple people usually don't deal well with not getting what they expect. It's like if they're expecting a McDonald's burger and fries and you give them a chef-prepared Kobe beef burger and hand-cut, homemade fries. A lot of them will still be at least vaguely disappointed because now they have to engage with it and make decisions. What is this? Is it better? Why?, etc. So many people just want to leave their brain shut off and shove the McDonald's crap into their face...

Around the '90s the Wachowskis also wrote a script called “Carnivore” which they described as “a Corman-style, low-budget horror movie that dealt with cannibalism or, more specifically, millionaires being eaten by cannibalis”. At some point George Romero got attached to Direct it and this makes me think that the Wachowskis were okay back then with writing B-movies, like maybe what “Assassins” should have been.

Banderas stole the show. Even though he was new at speaking English at the time, his comedic timing and line delivery were superb. The film was a little on the long side, but not enough to drag and make an audience cry. Banderas was the pick-me-up and kept me engaged. By no means a bad movie, and a far better film than The Specialist.

beg to differ here, but Assassins was really Sly's last great action movie before he went into obscurity, it was certainly better than the cartoon and jingoistic Reagen-era Rambo 2 or the turd Demolition Man. It wasn't marketed properly and there were on-set issues as well, coupled with a somber tone of the movie and Stallone in a more mature role which American audiences were sadly not used to.

I can remember reading the Wachowskis script for Assassins back in 1994 and being blown away by how awesome and action packed it was. It read really well. Then I heard the great Richard Donner (one of my favs) was going to direct it and Stallone was going to star. I figured it can't miss! Boy, was I wrong. Richard Donner brought on screenwriter Brian Hegland to do a rewrite. But as it would turn out, Donner was the wrong director for the film. The two went on to do Conspiracy Theory together. A better fit of both their talents.

Imo the real problem with stallone’s movies starting to flop by the 90s is that he simply isn’t that great of an actor. That’s not to say he’s trash, he’s decent and he is a legit veteran in the industry. But he shouldn’t have ever been able to demand 15mil+ for a major project. He’s basically a B level star getting A level roles. Stallone actually seems like a pretty nice guy. But skill-wise: Connery, cruise, Depp, Pitt, Denzel, Samuel, Morgan Freeman, Christian Bell, Russel crow, Dicaprio, Joaquin phoenix, ledger (rip) Gyllenhaal, Tom hardy and of course deniro and Pacino etc…… Stallone is simply not on the level of those a listers as far as talent and variety imo. Movie critics definitely noticed that by the mid 90s and subconsciously fans did as well. I actually still like Stallone and respect him as a action movie veteran.

I didn't liked Assassins. With the exception of Antonio Banderas, every actor in this movie looked really bored, like they are just doing it for a paycheck and that's it, and the worst is Sylvester Stallone who pretty much phoned in every line with very little emotion. Antonio Banderas was really the only character who looked like he was having fun, and the only reason I actually managed to watch the movie all the way trough. Story is nothing amazing, the action is pretty standard with the exception of the Taxi scene which was pretty cool and unique, and overall, the movie didn't leave much of an impression, Antonio Banderas was kind of fun, but the rest of the film is very forgettable.
